Chapter 16: The Trivia

[Hey, Host, we’ve collected loads of Faith in a flash, you know! We’re past ten million now!] The System zoomed across Lin Ning’s head. [I’ve never seen someone’s Faith increase this rapidly! Lin Ning, you’re awesome! If we keep this up, our mission will be over in a jiffy!]

Lin Ning was a little stunned by the System’s enthusiastic high praises. But no matter how famous he was getting, he vowed to make food as he always did — to stick with the principles he started this life with.

Should I make another set for the Film King? Lin Ning pondered as he worked on the next step.

“The water’s boiling now, so I’ll show everyone how we eat this. You start by picking your soup base’s flavor, so take your time choosing what you like best.”

Lin Ning adjusted the camera to show a row of takeaway containers lined up to the side. What attracted everyone’s attention most, though, was the array of compartment plates of different sizes.

“As you can see, a single serving of vegetables has wood ears, congealed duck blood, enoki mushrooms, beech mushrooms, potatoes, sweet potatoes, thin glass noodles, thick glass noodles, and yellow noodles…

“A single serving of meat has beef, mutton, fish, shrimp balls, shrimp, squid, chicken…

“You can assemble your meals however you want.

“Of course, the sets I’ve promised to send out have already been assembled and are available for virtual tasting. Feel free to try out every set before placing your order. Also, compartment plates are different from singular servings since they’ve got more variety and look better.”

Zhang Zhining accepted a plate of wood ears from Lin Ning. He picked up a piece and gingerly put it in the pot. “Like this?”

Lin Ning laughed, “Here, allow me.” He reached for the plate, placed four wood ears into the pot, and added a little bit of each vegetable in. Then, he dipped in some thinly sliced meat.

“The pots in front of us now may be big, but the ones I’ll be delivering are known as Mandarin Duck pots, like that one over there. These pots are divided into two so that two soups can be put in the same pot at once, that way, you and your guests get a little variety.”

As the tantalizing scent floated in the air, the audience scrambled to copy Lin Ning’s movements, grabbing bowls from their counters to put seasonings in.

!!!

The sesame paste was delicious! Just a lick of the fragrant paste was enough to make them want to gulp down the whole bowl! They could even add mushroom sauce, crushed peanuts, and coriander! The spring onions were good, too, in a refreshing way! The streamer put a lot of thought into this — he even stuck labels on the bowls.

They could probably fill their stomachs with just the seasonings!

[Lemon Kitchen, what’s the fluffy green stuff?] The bullet screen asked.

Lin Ning answered, “The green stuff’s nanohana, the one that’s white in the center and green on the edges is bok choy, these here are chop suey greens, and the big white ones over there are napa cabbages. Oh, right, the meat gets cooked really quickly once it’s in the soup, so it’s good to eat once its color changes, like this.” He passed a slice to Zhang Zhining. “Here you go. Meat can’t be cooked for too long ‘cause it’ll get tough. Same goes with vegetables — just a quick dip in the soup will make it soft enough to eat.”

Bullet screen: [Is that long meat shrimp?]

“Yes. Once it’s cooked its shell still must be peeled, so do be careful. I’ll show you how it’s done in a while.”

[I’m going dizzy figuring out which meat is which. I just wanna dump everything into the pot! Is this what having a harem feels like?]

[What’s that reddish brownish stuff? Duck blood? Blood? Is it edible?]

Lin Ning answered, “It’s edible, but most of you guys might not like how it tastes. It really is approved by the FSB, though, so don’t worry. Just make sure not to eat it by mistake if you’re not a fan, though.”

Zhang Zhining gulped. He picked a slice of tender beef from the sour and spicy soup pot with his chopsticks and dipped it in the seasoned sauce. The tender, aromatic beef rolled in his mouth, melting into the seasoning and blooming into sparks on his tongue. There was a little ball that he bit into accidentally. His tongue went numb, the sensation shooting up his head. His eyes turned red.

!!!

It was spicy, but it tasted really good!

His eyes brightened. “Ning Ning, this beef is amazing! Here, have some! I think I’m getting emotional. I never thought I’d be lucky enough to enjoy food this good! You guys, I recommend the sour and spicy soup base… It’s so intense, I love it!” He stuffed his mouth again, barely finishing his sentence. It didn’t matter that the spice made his eyes tear up — Zhang Zhining was completely overwhelmed by this mystical new sensation.

“Woah! This bok choy’s fresh and watery, and it’s great at absorbing the spiciness. And these beech mushrooms — when you chew on them it’s like they’re bursting! It’s so cool! I love this tofu. Hey, look at how bouncy the tofu is! Isn’t it delicate? Man, this is delicious!

“Wow, this fish is super tender. What’s this yellow thing… Corn? Yum! I don’t feel like I’m eating food, but rather gold and silver and diamonds and jade! This is priceless, Ning Ning! You’re the best. We’re best friends from now on, you god!”

Lin Ning was shocked by Zhang Zhining’s professionalism on stream. He didn’t think he’d have such a high opinion on hot pots, or that he’d make such a thorough description and recommendation on the different ingredients. Looks like inviting him was a good choice. “Come on, you’re pulling my leg. We’ve been friends from the start. Don’t rush yourself, there’s still a lot more to eat. Try this shrimp ball. I’ll make you a fried egg…”

He felt something tug on the bottom of his pants. Lin Ning turned. The kitty sat on the floor, its eyes cold but sparkling. It was beating around the bush, but it clearly wanted something.

Cute!

Lin Ning set down a plate for the kitty in a corner the audience couldn’t see. He plucked some shrimp balls from the tomato and fungus soup pot, then peeled off the shells of some prawns and added some bouncy fish. Since Lin Ning had already figured out what his kitty liked and disliked, there was no way this cat could resist what he was about to offer. It was only until the kitty’s tail swooshed and its eyes closed as it chewed that he only continued streaming.

Lin Ning explained to the stream, “Looks like everyone’s grasped how hot pots are eaten. It’s kind of like a self-service style of eating where you put what you like into your pot. I’ve pinned a message detailing how long each ingredient should be cooked, but you don’t have to be too strict on the time — you’ll be able to guess whether an ingredient is cooked once you’ve tried the virtual tasting’s sample.”

The bullet screen went silent for a moment.

“Why’s it suddenly so quiet?”

Zhang Zhining lifted his head from his bowl, his mouth still stuffed. “They’re all too busy eating, like me. It’s so good we can’t speak… Mmph, the beef and lamb are so, so good…” he mumbled.

The bullet screen chimed in:

[I just took a bite, and I feel like I’ve eaten something more precious than diamonds! I’m stuffing my mouth like crazy. Luckily the virtual tasting can be refreshed, otherwise, I would’ve long finished everything!]

[Yeah! My whole family hasn’t had a single Nutrient Dose since morning. Now we’re all gathered by the dining table eating virtual hot pots. Bless the 3D simulation! It feels as if we’re eating the real thing. Sitting with my family and enjoying hot pot is what pure happiness is!]

[My entire family bought high-tech simulation devices the moment we learned about Lemon Kitchen. Now the baby at home’s crying because he can smell the food but isn’t allowed to eat them. I feel so bad…]

[Hahahaha I’m at school right now. The whole campus is going crazy trying out the virtual tasting feature on their bunks. It’s like they’re all possessed.]

[I’m an assistant student for one of my professors, and when I walked into his staffroom to hand in materials, he had the smell of sour and spicy hot pot all over him. He must’ve left the stream after seeing I was coming in, since it’d destroy his dignity. But I still saw through him.]

[Your professor’s too cute_(:з」∠)_]

Lin Ning blinked mysteriously, although the audience couldn’t see his expression. “I’ll now give out the gift I promised because of the ten-minute blackout. Like I said, I’ll be giving out one more hot pot to a fan but this time, it’ll be through a trivia game.”

The bullet screen went wild.

The fans’ ears perked up.

[Aaaaah please look at me! I’m super fast at answering stuff!]

[My heart went nuts hearing the words “trivia game”. All the people who suck at studying — sucks to be you!]

[Now’s a competition of hand speed. My family’s got all their search engines fired up.]

[Just asking, based on the table of weird food, am I the only one who thinks that Lemon Kitchen’s question is going to be really strange…]

[…This is stifling. I suddenly feel scared.]

[Why does the dining room suddenly feel like an exam hall?]

Lin Ning opened his mouth slowly: “How many cuisines did old China have, and what were they?”

[……Oh no. I’ve never heard of this before.]

[I’m crying. This isn’t something you can just look up?!]

[I think I know a little, but not all… Lu?]

The bullet screen sighed and wailed, but suddenly, an answer arched through the screen like a comet.

ZhangYiMing: [Eight big cuisines: Chuan, Yue, Lu, Min, Su, Xiang, Zhe, and Hui.]

Lin Ning’s eyes widened slightly, not believing that someone could answer that quickly. He pinned the comment and gave it a like. “You’re amazing. It’s all correct.”

?????

!!!!!

The bullet screen danced again, looking at the words ZhangYiMing, now in red font. The viewers couldn’t believe their eyes.

Zhang Yiming was the hottest actor in the past few years. He’d lapped every single award there was to receive in the circle, was easy going towards others, and was an interstellar idol with the looks and manners of a god. Everything he acted in topped the box offices, and every single movement he made was a trending topic. Of course everyone would go crazy over him giving out Rewards to Lemon Kitchen, but now he’s even answering questions you’d only find answers to in a museum??!!! Film King, were you completely blinded by food?

And the question Lemon Kitchen asked was one hell of a question…

_(:3」∠)_ Damn, ever since they became Lemon Kitchen fans, they’ve been learning something new every single day.
