Chapter 6: Ch.06 The First Trial

The Dungeon is dark and gloomy with small glowing orbs showing where the floor is. There are many rooms with various kinds of monsters in each room. It's easy to tell there are more than 5 monsters down here. When we enter a door the ceiling opens up and a bright light comes from above. It helps illuminate the room and the chained up monsters.

"The cobalts are chained together in the center of this room." Joris says while looking at us to see our reaction.

"Well, that's great." Ryan grumbles with a sigh. "This is gonna be fun." He says sarcastically while looking at the group of cobalts. Ryan starts feeling nervous and unpleasant feelings right now because he's going to be forced to kill something for the first time in life. 'I've never killed anything bigger than an insect in my life!' Ryan though as anxiety starts to take hold.

There are 5 cobalts chained up in an X formation in the middle of the room. Each cobalts is over 4 feet tall and weighs over 120 pounds. They have a yellow-green skin with a slimy texture and large green eyes that glow in the dark. Their faces were covered with a dark purple membrane that is reminiscent of a frog's mouth.

"Here. Take these blades and aim for the center of their chest or between their eyes, your choice." Joris commands us.

Ryan looks at the blade in Joris's hand and reaches for it. The blades were the size of a Bowie knife. But the blade looked black in color with a dark blue edge on the weapon that looked sharp as hell.

Hiro takes one of the knives without question, while Joris takes the other with a little delay.

"Okay. First chance goes to Hiro!" Joris yells at Hiro.

As Hiro readies himself for his turn, he hears Joris say to him "Don't get yourself killed."

"Ha!" Hiro shouts with a big smile. "Do you really think I'll let that happen? You don't know me yet! Once I'm in this fight, nobody will stop me!"

‘Joris wasn’t talking about the cobalts you moron!’ Ryan wanted to retort and held his comments to himself, because of Hiro’s obliviousness. ‘Are trail is practically shooting fish in a barrel.’ as he continued to think about their situation.

Ryan watches as Hiro walks towards the cobalts. Hiro rushes in and swings his blade down at the cobalts. Causing it's scream loudly as its blood and guts spew out on the cold dungeon floor. Hiro immediately looks at Ryan and smiles, showing off his perfect white teeth. And Ryan noticed Hiro's orb necklace adsorb particles of energy into it as the orb began to glow red.

"What were those particles?" Ryan asked.

"Those are the particles that come from killing monsters. We call it mana." Joris answers with a serious tone. "It's part of becoming a chosen one and gives you a boost of strength to become stronger."

"So if we kill more monsters, we get more mana?" Ryan asks.

Joris nods. "Yes. That's what we're trying to do here."

Ryan is confused about how the science of mana worked when they can kill a bunch of monsters and become stronger. ‘I guess the Dark Elves need to be sure that are necklaces work? And why are they giving us such an easy task?

"You need to understand that the magic that runs this world is different from yours." Joris explains. "It's all based on the element of nature. When you kill something, you release its mana into the air. Then it goes to the one who slayed them. But enough talking, Ryan you're up."

'Magic? We come from a world of science, Joris. And it looks like I can't delay this any longer.' Ryan thinks. He grabs the blade and begins to walk towards the other cobalts that Hiro hasn't killed. As Ryan gets closer to the cobalts, he notices that the chains on the cobalts were made of a strange material. It's hard and seems to be indestructible. And the cobalts are struggling against the chains and each other.

"Sorry man, I really don't want to do this." Ryan says to the cobalt as the monster struggles to break free from its bindings.

The cobalt looks at Ryan with its eye sockets, which have no pupils and its mouth open as if in pain. 'They must not have eaten recently.' Ryan thinks to himself.

Ryan comes in close to the cobalt and swings his blade down at one of them. The blade cuts right through the creature's chest, causing it to stop moving instantly as the blood starts pouring out its wound. Ryan felt the guilt of ending the creature as he saw the life leave the cobalt life.

"That was too easy." Ryan said with a whisper. Then those similar particles from before enter Ryan's necklace making the orb glow its golden light. Ryan can feel energy start spreading from the necklace into his body. 'I feel the mana making my body feel warm and tingly.' Ryan thinks as this sensation begins to feel pleasant.

After Hiro and Ryan kill the rest of the cobalts, Ryan feels the more sensation run through his body and he sighs.

"Man, I'm getting a little addicted to this sensation." He says to himself.

"Yea, love this power." Hiro said with excitement as his orb necklace is glowing brighter now and mine orb's glow isn't too much behind his either.

Ryan then looks at Joris, who is still watching over the two humans.

"Is there anything else we need to do?" Ryan asks Joris.

"We are waiting until your orbs reach a high enough level so you can fight properly."

"Aww man! Can't I kill some more monsters to get stronger!" Hiro said with some annoyance.

"You’ve done enough for your first trial." Said Joris, who is still watching over the two human males. Then he continues, "We’ll meet up with Lady Yoona then retire for today."

Joris then takes the two human males back to the Great Hall where the Dark Elves are gathered.

While in the Great Hall, Ryan and Hiro hear a lot of whispering going around about the two humans.

"The Twins of Mournhold." Says a tall elf with black hair and red eyes wearing plate armor. Was staring back and forth at our necklaces?

"It is true, we were told these humans are the ones." Another male elf with a similar outfit says to the other elves. "But I do not believe it yet. We should wait ~." Ryan couldn't hear the last of what he was whispering.

"Silence! Do not speak against our new chosen one or face the consequences!" A female Dark Elf yells across the room.

Everyone in the hall goes silent as Lady Yoona comes down from the altar where she motions for us to come to her. As we walk towards Yoona, she looks at Hiro and Ryan.

Her violet eyes stare at Hiro's glowing orb and Ryan as she smirks then turns her attention to mine.

"So, the Twins of Mournhold truly have chosen you." She can barely contain her excitement.

"Twins of Mournhold?" Ryan asks.

"Yes, the goddess created these artifacts for the chosen ones to protect our lands from the coming calamity." As Yoona

continues explaining to Hiro and Ryan, Joris came over to them.

"Your Highness, I believe the Chosen Ones are ready to slay stronger monsters to absorb stronger amounts of mana. Starting tomorrow."

"You are sure?"

"I am certain my Priestess."

"Then let us rest for my Chosen Ones. For you are going to have a busy week ahead of you."

Hiro had his hands crossed with his over-inflated ego as he continued to listen to Yoona.

"What exactly does this Chosen One thing mean?" Ryan asked Yoona.

"That is for you to become our protectors."

"Protectors?"

Yoona nodded. "Yes, the Twin of Mournhold will be our greatest protector."

"She just wants us to work for her." Hiro added with a smirk.

Ryan glared at Hiro. "..."

Ryan wanted to play dumb to try to extract more info about being the Chosen One for the Sorellians. And Hiro is running interference unwittingly!

"W-What?!." Hiro stuttered.

"I'm sure both of you are famished? Come let's eat." Yoona said to both Ryan and Hiro.

Both men followed her to a dining hall. There was a large crescent shaped table where Yoona sat down with them.
