Aunty Mei came over at this point as well.
She had been busy in the kitchen and, when she was all done, she returned to her room and changed out of her clothes that smelled like grease.
Seeing Gu Yaobai, Aunty Mei, taken aback a little, said, “Third Young Master has joined us today.”
Grumbling, Aunty Mei noticed the baffled look on Gu Xi. She thought perhaps Old Mr. Gu had forgotten to introduce them. Walking over, she introduced the two of them, “This is the third brother of the Gu family. You should refer to him as ‘Third Uncle’. The one next to him is his daughter. She’s one year older than you.”
Not only did what Aunty Mei had said not clarify Gu Xi’s confusion, it confused her even more.
Gu Shao was the second one in the family and Little Uncle was the fourth. The two of them was less than 2 years apart in age. How did they fit a third brother in between?
Before Gu Xi had gotten too far down that thought process, Old Mr. Gu, after walking a couple of steps forward, noticed that something was off and that his granddaughter wasn’t right behind him. He stopped, turned around, and called out to Gu Xi.
“C’mon, Xixi. Come and have lunch with Grandpa.”
Old Mr. Gu’s tone was naturally kinder when he talked to Gu Xi. Even the look on him became visibly more loving.
“Okay,” said Gu Xi as she hurried up and caught up with Old Mr. Gu.
See that Gu Shao had walked up toward them as well, Gu Xi scooped over closer to Gu Shao subtly.
A smile flashed past Gu Shao’s eyes when he lowered his head and looked at Gu Xi who had walked up next to him – Good, she didn’t forget about her own dad after arriving at the Gu’s.
The group entered the dining room.
The dining area of the Gu’s main resident was just like any other rooms; it was very spacious.
There was a big, round table in the middle of the dining room and all of the dishes were already placed on it. At a glance, over half of them were of the sweet and sour kind.
Aunty Mei had mentioned to Gu Xi in the past that almost all of the Gu family members prefer sweeter food, with the exception of Gu Shao.
“Take your seat,” said Old Mr. Gu to the others after he was seated.
The Gu family didn’t normally care too much about this formality and the few young boys didn’t always observe the order by age either but they would be more formal during major holidays and events.
Gu Xi thought the next to be seated would be Big Uncle but, lo and behold, the next one who seated was Gu Shao.
What baffled Gu Xi even more was that Gu Shao did not take the spot that left immediately left of Old Mr. Gu but directly across from him.

Gu Xi looked baffled.
Right then, Gu Chenyi whispered into her ear, “Are you feeling baffled?”
Gu Xi nodded.
Gu Chenyi smiled and explained to her, “There is nothing wrong with the order, as Second Uncle is the real patriarch of the Gu family.”
“Oh?!” Gu Xi, taken aback a little, looked over at Gu Chenyi in surprise. That she really didn’t know.
Then why wasn’t Gu Shao living in the Gu’s house? It didn’t look like her father and her grandfather had any problems with each other.
Thought Gu Xi to herself.

The remaining people were much more casual.
Gu Xi looked around and finally sat down next to Gu Shao.
Across from them, Old Mr. Gu, who had wanted his precious granddaughter to sit with him, felt sad for quite a while.*
Then, not wanting Gu Xi to feel intimidated having her first meal there, Old Mr. Gu did not ask her to sit with him instead of Gu Shao.
“I’ll sit with Xi, my big sister.” Gu Chenyi was the fastest one and grabbed the spot next to Gu Xi. Gu Yanxiao and Gu Yanlin sat down next to them in order.
Gu XueEr wanted to sit over on that side as well but, after walking over, noticed that all of the spots were already taken. It was a bit embarrassing standing there.
It didn’t take Gu XueEr long to smile, shake off the embarrassment and walked over to the other side to take the spot across from Gu Xi.

Translator’s rambling:
