“Gu Xi, you must have faith in yourself. You got this,” added Dong Mingming with a look of seriousness. Nevertheless, the look on her suggested more that she was saying, “Gu Xi, hang in there. Don’t drop.”
Having said that, Dong Mingming thought about it some, gritted her teeth, and said, “Worse case scenario, as I have said in the past, I’ll take the English ones from you.
“And, and, maybe the Top Student literature one.”
Dong Mingming thought that Gu Xi had been unsettling all morning and very much looked like an eggplant that had been pelted by hale because of the 39 exercise books. Which was the reason that she was doing her best in trying to comfort her.
What she didn’t know was that Gu Xi was very pleased for “losing” the bet of 39 exercise books. What Gu Xi was really worried about was the parent-teacher conference in the afternoon.
Even though Gu Shao had promised that he will be there for the parent-teacher conference in the morning, Gu Xi was still worried.
On her phone, there was just the “Not bad” and “Pay attention in class” texts from Gu Shao and nothing else.
Gu Xi really wished that he had said something else.
That being said, she was also worried that she would receive a message from Gu Shao telling her that he would not be able to make the parent-teacher conference because something else important had popped up.
Gu Xi’s odd nervousness lasted the entire morning and into the afternoon.
All the way until she finally received another message from Gu Shao: [Almost arriving at your school.]
Gu Xi’s eyes beamed when she saw the text. All of her worries seemed to have disappeared that very minute.
Next to her, Dong Mingming saw the foolish smile on Gu Xi and was baffled. She tugged at Gu Xi’s sleeve and asked, “What’s going on with you?”
“My dad’s coming,” said Gu Xi as her smile brightened some more.
Upon hearing that, Dong Mingming’s lips twitched a little, “……” Even so, was it necessary to be that excited?
She made it look like it was her very first parent-teacher conference.
Dong Mingming grumbled to herself.
Regardless, recalling Gu Xi’s scores this time. Dong Mingming suddenly “got it”. How could she forget that Gu Xi was #1 for their grade!

If she was ever able to be #1 in their grade, she would probably be even more excited than Gu Xi during the parent-teacher conference.
Dong Mingming didn’t know that Gu Xi was merely worried about whether Gu Shao would be able to make it.
Afterall, she had received her fair share of “maybe next time”, “I’ll talk to your teacher over the phone if there’s anything important to discuss”, “Grandma is busy today too”……
After a while, she stopped getting even those.

Gu Xi started cleaning to desk.
She first stacked all of her text books and notebooks from on top of her desk and inside her drawer neatly in two stacks according to subject and size and placed them inside her drawer. Then she folded up nicely all the examination and exercise papers and neatly placed them inside the drawer. She even flattened out her used scratch papers, stacked them up neatly, and placed them inside her drawer, leaving a very clean desktop.
After that, she pulled out a few wet towelettes and scrubbed down her desk.
Not only did she tend to her desktop and her drawer, she even had all nooks and crannies covered.
Dong Mingming, next to her, was dumbfounded when she saw Gu Xi cleaning up in her excited state.
Yes, it was necessary to clean one’s desk up a little because their parents were on their way.
She, too, cleaned up. But that was only limited to placing all the stuff on her desk inside the drawer and also hid a few manga that she didn’t want her parents to see. It was nowhere close to what Gu Xi had done.
“A little bit over the top, don’t you think, Classmate Gu Xi?” asked Dong Mingming in a blue tone.
Pausing a little, when Gu Xi looked over at her, Dong Mingming carried on and mumbled, “You don’t give me the feeling that this is going to be a parent-teacher conference at all.”
Upon hearing that, Gu Xi lifted her brows and asked, “What is it like then?”
“That you are welcoming some important guest,” said Dong Mingming very determinately. And the kind of super level VVVVIP guest at that.
