8. There are No Demons in the Human Guild, Right?

The room Carla rushed into, belonged to the guildmaster.
The guildmaster, is the highest position in the guild.
In the event of an emergency, he also serves as the commander who leads all the adventurers working at the guild.

To become a guildmaster, experience as an adventurer as well as their current rank, on top of clearing a strict assessment given by the guild was necessary.
Of course, since being of honest character was a requirement, those who loved justice and hated evil, were the majority of applicants.

“Master, take a look at this.”

Out of breath, Carla enters the room and shows the results of the magic tool, which just came out, to the guildmaster.
Sitting at his desk and working, was a white-bearded old dwarf.
Although his appearance was of an old man past 70, his body hadn’t deteriorated at all.
His muscles were bulging, reminiscent of a rock’s hard surface.

He is the guildmaster of Neuville – Mackenzie.

“Why, Carla. Did you come again to get your ass groped by me?”

“N~o~w~a~y! You say this every time. Please act a bit more guildmaster-like!!”

Time is cruel.
Mackenzie has been serving as a guildmaster for almost 40 years.
When he was inaugurated, he was a straightforward and strict master, but now he has become a perverted geezer running after the receptionist’s butt.

“So what business do you have? Downstairs has also been pretty noisy since a while ago…”

“Yes, please take a look at this.”

Carla shows him the words floating in the magic tool.
It was the new phrase which Capua, a.k.a Capsodia, brought out.

“”Damn. Damn.”? What is this? I’ve never seen it before.”

Looking at the words he sees for the first time, Mackenzie, with his 40 years of experience as a guildmaster, could only make his eyes round.

“Is it a new phrase?”

“There’s no mistaking it… though it’s too weak”

Mackenzie strokes his long hair.
Carla also showed a troubled expression.

“Truthfully, “Damn. Damn.” alone is hard to judge.”

“Yes. It could point to a qualification above “What are you”…”

“… Or a qualification below the lowest ranked “How unsightly…”. Or perhaps-“

It could truly signify a ‘damned’ existence…

The guildmaster, who always stares at the receptionists while making a lecherous face, now had a steep expression.
He had the face a fighting man.

“I don’t want to think about it… but the first thought that comes to mind… A demon.”

“What…? There’s no way…”

If this was the case, then it’s clearly a disaster.
A demon has shown up in the middle of the town.
Moreover, its purpose is unknown.
That makes it all the more dangerous.

Carla struggles to breath.

The extent of possible havoc crossed her head.

But Mackenzie spits out a “Fuha!”.

“Fu ha ha ha ha ha… I’m just joking. How could a demon be taking an adventurer’s exam in a human city? Gu ha ha ha ha.”

“Y-yeah right… There’s no way… Oh ho ho ho ho ho.”

The two make noises of laughter in the room.
After laughing for a while, the two went back to staring at the “Damn. Damn.”.

“What shall we do about his guild class?”

A guild class is a unique class system in which the guild judges the abilities of a person, independent from their level.
It’s divide into 5 stages – “Gold Rank”, “Silver Rank”, “Bronze Rank”, “Iron Rank”, and “Newcomer”. Based on it, the contents of the work an adventurer can take are decided.

Originally, the phrase from the magic tool is used to assign a rank, but in case of a new phrase, neither Carla nor Mackenzie knew what to do.
This was the meaning of them twisting their necks.

“There is no choice but to measure his abilities directly.”

“Will you measure his fighting ability, like during promotional tests? It would take too long to find an adventurer who’d measure it though…”

“Fine… I’ll measure his strength myself.”

“Mackenzie-sama himself…?”

In adventurer class promotion exams, it was common for another adventurer to be used for measuring the abilities of the aspiring adventurer.
However, Mackenzie himself holding a test was an almost unseen occurrence.

Right now he’s titled “Perverted Geezer” by all the receptionists, but during his active days, Mackenzie was an experienced adventurer with the title of silver rank.
Carla doesn’t know of Mackenzie from his active days, but she clearly remembers how he knocked down a few copper ranked adventurers who were going wild inside the guild, in an instant.

While the guild may be a place which adventurers with rough personalities frequent, Neuville’s guild had a significantly lower number of cases involving such people. That’s probably because Mackenzie is always on the lookout.

“Then, at once…”

Mackenzie triumphantly leaves the room.
While looking at his back, Carla mutters.

“It would be nice if he doesn’t get hurt though…”

Carla was secretly worried about Capua, after seeing Mackenzie swinging his thick arms.
