Chapter 14
Promise to the Princess
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“…Hmph.”
“This white rice is very delicious, Mina-san.”
Mina with her arm crossed seemed to be displeased to see me and she was giving me a dumbfounded look in her eyes as she gazed at me with her puffed cheeks.
Her small forehead had a… distinct blue streak on it.
I was horrified by this, so I tried my best to make up and put her in a better mood.
“I like the way every grain of rice shines.”
“Hmph… It would have tasted even better if it hadn’t gotten cold.”
“No, I like it better when it’s cold.”
“Ugh, I can see that.”
When I replied plainly, Mina clenched her fists and closed her eyes in frustration. Her anger seemed to have subsided, because she took a drink of her tea and let out a sigh.
I don’t know why, but she seemed to be able to relate to me in an unexpected way. With her small mouth, she ate a large, greasy piece of Shogayaki. [TLN: pork fried with ginger]
Mina liked all kinds of meat, so she held her cheeks as she enjoyed eating it.
Hmmm, we’re literally eating the same thing… but, why does food eaten by beautiful girls look so delicious?
The beautiful girls that had eaten the Macarons and Shogayaki were really happy.
“Onii, your phone is ringing… wait, your phone is RINGING!?”
[TLN: Onii = Big Brother/Brother.]
An electronic tone rang out from my cell phone, and Mina looked up, holding her mouth with her eyes wide open. Her characteristic twin-tails were swinging widely, seeming to emphasize her surprise.
“Good grief. I always turn off my notifications because I’m popular, but today I accidentally forgot to turn them off.”
“If it’s not spam it’s probably from a girl!”
Mina put her hand on her chin with a twinkle in her eye and pretended to be a detective. I lightly replied, “Don’t be silly,” and checked the screen of my phone.
“Let’s go together, tomorrow.”
Aikawa sent me an email.
“With that expression you’re making right now, I can tell it came from a real girl~”
“Eh? What did I look like?”
“You’re grinning really hard.”
I was grinning…huh? He seemed to have seen through all of this, even the fact that I was dealing with a girl.
Mina’s too smart for this, so I won’t rag on her that much.
(It’s all in Hirigana…)
I was a little stunned that she couldn’t at least use predictive conversion, and then I looked at the text twice.
(……Seriously, I never thought the day would finally come when I would be going to school with a girl!)
I roamed around the living room with a red face and sent an email to Aikawa-san for her approval. It only took a few seconds for her to send me an email saying, 『I understand.』
『What about the time and meeting place?』
『7:30am, Gifu Station.』
While I was momentarily taken aback by the speed of her reply, I felt a little more excited about tomorrow, which made me somewhat happy.
I don’t have a cute childhood friend or fiance like the protagonists of the romance novels that I often read, so I was longing for this kind of situation.
But, If people saw us together, rumours would start… Well, I guess it’s too late now.
Although I don’t have that kind of relationship with Aikawa-san, I am aware of her as a member of the opposite sex.
I don’t like her, but she makes me nervous… Well, I think she’s definitely in the “I’m curious about her” position.
When you’re under the same umbrella with someone, or they smell you and hold your hand, I’m pretty sure anyone would be conscious of that person.
But I don’t think it will develop into a romantic relationship, because they’d probably think it’s just a skinship.
“Thanks for dinner.”
“Okaaay~”
I finished my dinner and went to my room. After finishing my homework, I spent a few minutes brainstorming an email to send to Aikawa-san.
『About what I said earlier, why are so friendly with me?』
It’s just this sentence, but I hesitate to send it. It’s just a single press of a button, but that one press felt like an incredibly heavy thing.
What if she ignores me? What if I step on a landmine or something? Every time I think about this, time passes by every moment.
I don’t want to be hated, but I can’t help but be curious about that…
『Sent.』
A weight was lifted from my shoulders when I mustered up some courage to press the button. I honestly didn’t know that just texting a girl would wear out my spirit so much.
Wiping the sweat from my forehead with a towel, I decided to wait for the reply.
I wanted to make the most of this time if I could, but I couldn’t help but get nervous when I thought about when she would reply.
(I wonder why extroverted boys can interact with girls in a straightforward manner…)
As I was thinking about this, I heard the electronic sound again. It was from Aikawa-san, who must have checked her email earlier.
『Don’t you remember. When were in our first year.』
It’s hard to tell from the text, but in short, she must be saying, “Don’t you remember what happened when you were in first grade?”
I thought it came from the debt I owed the girl for saving her when I was showing her the way… but it seems I was wrong.
“First year… Nothing special happened, right?”
When I was a freshman, all I did was talk to Yusuke, and I didn’t do anything noteworthy.
At most, Aikawa-san and I have passed each other a few times in the hallway and caught a glimpse of each other.
『I don’t remember at all. Did something happen?』
『There is. I’m going to take a bath now. Good night.』
(…A bath!?)
I replied, “Good night,” and gently closed my phone. I don’t feel like going to my desk anymore, so I lie down on my bed and think about something bad.
Aikawa-san, who’s not wearing anything, takes a shower, washes her hair and her whole body, then gets into the bathtub.
Aikawa, who’s soaking in the bathtub, squinted her eyes while saying, “hoo…” She then dips her face into the water, splashing water on her slippery skin.
Then, she made some bubbles and played with them. She’s very childlike in adorable way.
“…Wait!? What am I thinking!!?”
I hurriedly shake my head to drive the evil thoughts out of my mind. The image of defenseless Aikawa-san taking a bath flashed through my mind.
If Aikawa-san knew I was thinking like this, she’d probably be disillusioned.
Although it would be hard to call them delusions, I am also disillusioned…
However, when Aikawa’s expression of heartfelt contempt while saying, “Gross,” came to my mind, I thought this wasn’t bad at all.
I knew that this was kind of a serious issue, but I think there are people who would relate with me. Scornful eyes, to me, are just too good that I love them. [TLN: oh hey a Maso, also thanks Flamer for helping on these parts.]
“In the end, what really happened in our First year…”
I thought for a moment as I set my alarm clock to 7am.
I’m sure that “event” is related to this incident. But I was in a different class from Aikawa-san, wasn’t I?
In our school, we rarely have a chance to interact with another class. There were students who came to our classrooms during lunch break, but neither Aikawa-san nor I went to each other’s classrooms.
Well, as far as I know.
As I was turning my head, I thought I heard a clicking sound, like gears meshing together.
A little bit of recollection came back to me.
“Oh yeah, I remember… that place where we ate lunch.”
The place where I ate lunch and macarons with Aikawa-san. I think I went there only once when I was a freshman.
It was before I became friends with Yusuke, so maybe in July? I think it was when I was looking for a spot to eat by myself that I could never find.
“Something happened back then…”
I remember up to the point where I muttered, “It’s getting a little sunny here.” But my memory of what happened after that was fragmentary.
I tried to dig up more memories, but I couldn’t remember anything more. It was like the content of the event seemed to have completely disappeared from my brain.
“Oh well…”
I turned off the lights in my room and wrapped myself up in a blanket like a bagworm.
If there was any indirect relationship between me and Aikawa-san, I think it was only that lunch spot, but I wonder if it was really true.
Only Aikawa-san knows the truth… right?
