Chapter 25: Chapter 25 – Suspicious Man.

A few days later, we had arrived in Everan. There was nothing special about the town except the number of people with animal ears had increased. There were even girls among these people.

They were so cute.

As soon as I got off the carriage, I found a group of three of them in front of the guild. They all had cat ears, and their tails were wagging. It was so cute that it made me want to harass them.

But I can't do that.

"What are you going to do now?" Clay asked before entering the guild building. I thought for a while and decided to stay in this town for a little longer.

"I'm going to stay in this town for a few days, then I'll travel to the capital," I replied. Clay then smiled and entered the guild along with Maine and Julia. The two girls asked me to wait, but I didn't do that.

I didn't want to spend any more time with them.

I got out of there as fast as possible and walked a few streets until I reached the town's main square. It was full of flowers and children playing near the fountain. I approached the fountain, took some water, and splashed it on my face.

It was freezing, so it was enough to "wake me up."

The children looked at me strangely, but I didn't care.

Then I walked a few streets looking for an inn. I wouldn't want Maine and Julia to know where I was. I have a feeling those girls are not a good thing.

I have to keep my distance from them.

After much searching, I found an inn—a two-story building with a double door. On the door were carved drawings that looked like some small dragons. This is the first time I have seen an inn like this.

I opened the double door and found something I didn't expect, which was a completely clean space. Although on the outside there was a sign that said "Inn," there was nothing in there. Tables, chairs, decorations, people. It was empty.

I then decided to leave. I was afraid that I had invaded some construction or something.

However, when I opened the door, I found someone. A woman about 40 years old who was wearing an apron over a basic shirt. She had black hair and brown eyes. I could see some wrinkles appearing on her forehead.

The woman smiled when she saw me.

"Welcome."

"..." With her greeting, I was silent.

I stepped out of the way, and then the woman entered. "Come here." She opened a door that was next to the stairs and called me. So I went there even though I didn't know who that woman was. If this is a trap, I'm in trouble.

But when I got there, I found nothing but a room full of... trash? I don't know if this can be considered trash. There were a lot of tables and chairs and some decorations. These were the things that were missing from the inn.

"Could you help me put this in their places?" The woman looked at me, looking like she was begging for help.

"Why is all this here?"

"Oh, it's because I just took over this inn. The previous owner had told me that things were stored here and put these things in the main hall by myself will be a problem. I was going to ask some adventurer to help me, but I'm out of money at the moment." The woman looked sad.

"I understand. Sure, I'll help you." I replied without a second thought.

The woman gave a smile, and then we started the work. It took almost 3 hours before everything was in place. Tables and chairs, pictures, potted plants ( The plants were already dead, the woman said she would change them later )

And after we were finished, the woman went to the inn's kitchen behind the counter ( the only thing inside the room before ) and prepared tea for both of us. We sat down at the table together.

"We work together, but we haven't even introduced ourselves, have we?" The woman gave an uncomfortable laugh. "My name is Anai, it's a pleasure." The woman held out her hand for me to hold.

"My name is Sophia, an adventurer. It's a pleasure."

"An adventurer?! You're not going to charge me for this job, right?"

"Of course not." I gave a smile, and Anai gave a relieved sigh. After that, I took another look around and asked about the rooms at the inn.

"They are ready to be used." That's what she replied.

"I would like a room. Since I helped you, I can get a discount, right?"

"Oh, sure. The food will be free!"

"No need to overdo it!"

Anai fetched the guests list and put my name on it. I decided to stay at the inn for five days. It would be enough time for me to rest a bit. Travel is tiring.

So we talked for a while, and I went to my room. It was a room with a single bed, a closet, and a desk like most inn rooms. It was standard.

And the bathroom was also standard. It had running water and a bucket I would use to pour the water on myself.

And after taking a cold shower, I finally managed to lie down. I stared at the ceiling for a while until I could sleep.

I woke up a few hours later, during the night. It was probably now 3 a.m. I got out of bed and looked out the window, I saw few people on the street, but there was some movement. 

But this was a street away from the main street, so the main street must be much busier.

"Hm?" I kept looking out the window and saw something strange happening. A suspicious man wearing a hoodie who appeared to be leaving the inn crossed the street and entered an alley on the other side.

"He was leaving this inn, wasn't he?" Worried, I went downstairs to see if Anai was okay. And when I got downstairs, everything was in place, and Anai seemed fine.

She was sleeping on the first floor, in a bedroom behind a door inside the kitchen. Yes, it was a big building. When I opened the door to her room, I saw her sleeping peacefully on her bed.

I went to the cashier and checked to see if the man had stolen any money, but it was all there. And the front door has locked.

"He didn't leave here, but it suspicious.... I don't know if I should get into this."
