Announcement Minor change: The way that Mimu talks about ars is by saying "Comrade Ars" which is "Dōshi arusu (同志アルス)". As you can tell, "doshi (同志)" means "comrade" or so. The latter part of the above example is just a*ru*su. Anyhow, I realized that I could just say Ars-shi to basically read "Comrade Ars" as well. So, that's the minor change. Mimu won't say "Comrade Ars" anymore, but Ars-shi. If you're Chinese, you probably read doshi as tongzhi which can be a form of saying "Gay" but idiomatically means Comrade, just like in Japanese. Just a fun fact I wanted to share~. In Chinese, Mimu would be calling Ars "Gay Ars, my comrade!" :kekw:

Chapter 164 -  Death Toll

"Ars-shi, I think we're almost done with the human anatomy diagrams."

"Wow, that was fast, Mimu."

"Hmm. It seems the number of deaths usually increases in the winter. It's only natural, but there were so many bodies to examine."

"Well... I'd really like to reduce the number of people who can't make it through the winter."

"That's the way it has to be, Ars-shi. You are not a god. You cannot stop nature from killing us humans."

"Well, I've gotten used to it, but I still hate to see people freezing and dying of hunger. I guess I'll have to get more work done."

"Hmm. I've traveled to many places, and it seems to me that the number of deaths in the winter is quite low here in Barcania. ...... You are not satisfied by this, comrade! That's what I'm talking about! We must further our results!"

"Enough with the flattery, Mimu. So, now that you're on the verge of completing the diagrams, is the book going to be ready?"

"No, that will take some time. Mosh-kun is working hard and staying awake to draw the diagrams. After it is completed, I will write the explanations that go with the diagrams. I need a little more time."

"All right. There's no need to rush, just make sure you're satisfied with the results. And when you're done, I will be the first person you show, okay?"

"Of course, I will. I want Ars-shi to see it."

"And you came all this way to just tell me that?"

"Ah. That's important, but there's another reason why I came to see you. It's about the herbs you gave me."

"Which herbs? I'm growing them in a greenhouse in the next village, what do you have?"

"I've been to see the greenhouse, it's nice. It's wonderful~!"

"Isn't it? I've heard reports that they've been able to grow medicinal herbs that only grow in the warmer months. We may be able to increase the production of medicines with it."

"That's exactly the point. I've traveled to many places, but I had no idea that such a wonderful thing existed. It was worth the trip to Barca just to learn about that greenhouse."

"That's good to know. So what's the deal with the herbs in the greenhouse, Mimu? Are you planning to start clinical trials?"

"Yes, I am. It will take some time for Mosh-kun to complete his diagrams, so I think we can start with something simple, what do you think? If only my Comrade would say yes, I'd like to get started."

"All right. As long as it doesn't delay the completion of the anatomy stuff, I don't mind."

"Thank you! I'll get started on the preparations! ...... Speaking of which, what drug should we start with for the clinical trial?"

"Hmmm... I'd like you to start with drugs for cuts, food poisoning, nausea, and diarrhea. They're all life-threatening diseases at this time, after all."

"I see, from your experience on the battlefield. I get it. There are several kinds of such medicines. I'll make sure I know which ones work best."

"Oh, Mimu. I'll make this clear: these are not human experiments. You have to get the consent of the other person before you test it. You don't want to force them to take the pills."

"I know, I know. Leave it to me, Ars-shi! Hahaha!"

When I warned him, he replied with a loud laugh.

I wondered if he was really okay.

I'm sure he's pretty good at medicine, but I can't help but feel that he's putting his own interests first.

It seems Mimu needs to be monitored.

Mosh, the painter, seems to be busy at the moment, so I'll just have another person keep track of him.

"You're still doing strange things with strange people, aren't you, Ars-nii?"

"What do you mean, 'as usual,' Kyle? I'm not doing anything weird!"

"I don't think I'm the only one who thinks so. But is it really necessary to do something like those experiments?"

"It's necessary for the development of medicine. You know that, don't you Kyle?"

"But Ars-nii is a healthy guy who doesn't get many colds. You don't need medicine, do you?"

"Well, I have [Meditation]. I'm fine after a night's sleep and I've never been sick in my life ."

"Then you don't have to do those "Clinical Trials" do you?"

"That's not true. Medical research is not only about medicine, it's also about surgery. If I were to have a surgical operation, I would want to make sure that it was safe and done by experts."

"But niisan, can't you just ask Bishop Paul to cast a healing spell on you?"

Well, it's true what Kyle said.

It is said that knights who are wounded on the battlefield receive Healing Magic at the church to heal their bodies and then go to war again, so maybe there is no need for manual surgical procedures.

But that's only because I can afford to have the magic done.

It is not possible for ordinary people to receive Healing Magic, which has an extremely high cost for one treatment.

I think that medical research is necessary.

However, after all this time, I still feel that medical research alone is not enough for the furtherment of human life-spans.

The reason for this is that people around here take it almost as a fact that they will die in winter.

Every year, people who do not have their own farmland come to the city in search of food and work and die in the winter.

I thought I knew about this to some extent, but I had been born and raised in a village for so long that I hadn't really experienced it firsthand.

However, this has changed a bit since the establishment of Barcania.

Even in the town I built, I saw that many people died in the winter and could not be welcomed by spring and its warmth.

This is not simply a medical problem.

The availability of food and the cold are important causes for the deaths.

I don't mean to say that I want to save or help everyone, but if there is something that can be done that I can see, I want to do something about it.

With this in mind, I decided to think of a way to combat the winter cold while looking at the still snowy landscape.
