Chapter 212 - Demons and Realization

"So that's the demon. It's really got horns. It's a big one, too."

When I received the report, I immediately went to the area near the border of the forest in the north of Barcania.

I thought that perhaps the soldiers had reported the appearance of some powerful enemy as a "demon".

But that seemed to be wrong.

It seemed that the demon had indeed come out of the forest as reported.

He was taller than a man, and his whole body was covered with a solid muscular armor, with horns growing out of his head.

This somewhat reminded me of ogres that appeared in stories.

However, according to the report, even if Barca's knights fired【Ice Spears】, it did not seem to take any damage at all.

This is the first time I've ever seen such a thing.

It would be too dangerous to leave it to the others.

"Ars-dono, it may be a legendary creature of this land, degozaru."

"What do you mean, Gran? A legendary creature?"

"Yes, that it is. You know the story that when this forest was being cultivated in the past, there was damage from large boars, and the cultivation ended in failure, right? But there is another variation to that story, that there is."

"I didn't know that. Could it be that it was not a big boar but an ogre that came out of the forest that caused the abandonment of the settlement?"

"That is correct, degozaru. And I want you to think about it, that I do, Ars-dono. If it was just large, wild boars that came out, why didn't the soldiers fight them off? It's not a mistake to think that "since they couldn't do that", then there was an opponent against whom attack magic didn't work."

"I see. Maybe that ogre is an apex predator of the giant boars, and as more and more boars leave the forest in fear of it, it chases after them."

"Well, that doesn't matter, degozaru. You're going to get rid of that creature as soon as possible, that you will."

"Ara, ara. You're not going to fight with me, are you, Gran? I don't mind, but why are you so excited?"

"What are you talking about? If we can get materials from that ogre, we might be able to create new things, that we can. How can you not be excited about it?"

Gran, who is standing next to me, observing the creature with binoculars from a distance, is very excited.

 I see.

 Is that why you're excited?

 That's fine.

I can't just sit outside like this at this time of year when the temperature is dropping.

I put away my set of binoculars, mounted Valkyrie, and sped to the ogre.

"[Ice Spear]"

Astride Valkyrie, I approached the ogre at top speed and unleashed my attack magic.

I had already heard about it in the reports, but I tried it myself to see if the spell really didn't work.

An icicle as thick and long as a man's arm appeared from my palm and shot out.

The ice spear hit the creature's body with no deviation in aim.

"It really had no effect..."

The demon guarded the [Ice Spear] that flew at him with his two arms that were raised like logs.

Its muscular body was not scratched in the slightest.

The wild boars were very strong, but I feel like this thing in front of me is stronger than that.

Seeing me attack it, the ogre fought back.

"Graaaaah!"

 He shouted loudly.

Then, all of the muscles surrounding his overly-large body became even larger, making creaking sounds.

It seemed to me like the change that happened had turned its muscles into ones that were as durable as metal armor.

Then, with a groan, it threw a punch with its strong arms.

The ogre was pretty fast, but Valkyrie dodged it quicker, so the punch cut through the air and hit the ground...

 Dogon!!!

... and the area where the punch hit caved in like a big dent.

Is the power of the punch alone that great?!

If a human were to take a hit like that to the body, you would be killed, no questions asked!

This guy is seriously scaring me a bit!

"...Then... how about this?"

I ran back to the ogre that had punched the ground and was getting into his stance again.

This time, it's an attack from a closer range.

I poured mana into the Nine-tailed Sword which was in my hand and slashed at the ogre's flesh.

I didn't use [Mana Injection] to put mana into the sword but rather poured it by controlling the mana's path by myself. This should have made the effects of the sword better than normal.

However, the effect was not as expected.

Since the battle, I'd been trying various things to see if I could create black flame on the Nine-tailed Sword like Pessi had, who was going to be the next Head of the Uruk family.

However, it seems that simply pouring a lot of mana does not help.

The only result was that the length of the flaming sword that appeared was longer than usual.

The fact is that controlling your mana and pouring it into a magic sword, such as the [Thundering Sword] and the [Nine-tailed Sword], will increase the output of the effects than if you just [Injected] mana. However, there is an upper limit.

It is not possible to make black flames appear just by pouring a lot of mana into the Nine-tailed Sword and also not possible to shoot lightning from the Thundering Sword in the same way.

I can't help but think that it would have been nice to be able to use [Black Flames], though.

Well, what's not there can't be helped.

While rethinking about magic swords in this manner, I observed the ogre that I had just attacked.

Apparently, it didn't seem to take much damage from the flaming sword created by the Nine-tailed Sword.

It might have the physical abilities of a human family Head.

So, I put away the once-Uruk's sword and used another magic sword.

I took out Grand Barca, the Hard-fang Sword I named.

It's a Japanese sword-shaped magic sword made from the tusks of young wild boars, and the Valkyries and I have poured a lot of mana into it.

Its originally-small shape has slowly been transformed into a sword throughout the years.

Even though it is a magic sword, its only characteristics are that it is hard to break, grows, and can cut easily.

"Glaaaaaaah!"

"[Shotgun]."

As I rushed towards the monster with my newly-drawn sword in hand, the ogre swung its large arms from side to side to prevent me from coming any closer.

The power of those arms is so much that even a graze could cause serious damage.

However, my plan was not to foolishly charge. The best option was to try to blinden the thing.

I barraged its eyes using [Shotgun]. It seems that even something with superhuman-level toughness of skin will find that it hurts if attacked in the eyes.

It flinched for a moment and left a gap.

I quickly approached the ogre and attacked using Grand Barca.

The reaction was so smooth that it almost made a crisp sound.

The ogre's body, which had been completely undamaged by attack magic and a different magic sword, was scarred.

Grand Barca seems to be able to cut through without any problems.

"Okay, that's it."

I then boredly repeated the same attack several more times and succeeded in cutting off the ogre's head.

I somehow succeeded in defeating the demon safely.

"Thank you for your hard work, Ars-dono. Now, I'm going to take that demon back with me, that I am."

"You're quick, Gran. Well, okay. I'm counting on you."

"It was a request, that it was, Lord Ars. I will now leave for Barcania, degozaru. I would like you to continue to do your best at killing the demons!"

"......? There are more?"

"Of course. Do you think that there is only one ogre within these vast trees? That isn't logical, right?"

"Wait a minute, Gran. I'm sure this is the only demon that came out of the forest, right? I don't need to go to the trouble of defeating others that might be living in the forest, do I?"

"It can't be like that, can it? The fact that it came out once may mean that the border of the forest and the demon's place of residence are close, degozaru. If that is the case, then the people of Barca living close to the border must be anxious because they don't know when the next demon will appear. Then, it is only natural that we should become aware of where the demons live and exterminate them, that we should."

"You are saying that I should go and find the housings of the demons in the forest, and exterminate them?"

"...... well... of course. Who else can do it accept yourself, Ars-dono?"

 Don't be silly.

Even though I'm acting like this, I've got a lot on my plate already, ya know.

But it is true that, as Gran said, innocents may be attacked and killed before anything can be done about it.

 I can't help it.

I think I'll invite Baito-nii to explore the forest with me.

And so, even though I had defeated the one ogre that had appeared in Barca, the demon problem was far from over.

CadmarLegend

Ok. Now I'm even more confused. So, you know this line that Ars said?

"This somewhat reminded me of ogres that appeared in stories."

Well, in that sentence, in the Japanese, the word for "ogres" was literally just Augur in romaji. I already x-ed out of syosetu, so can't give the exact characters that were used.

The reason why I'm confused is now, whenever I see Oni, I don't know if the author means Ogre or just "Demons" in general. Like, is Gran saying that there are more ogres or demons in general in the forest? Cuz, Ars literally meant Ogres after describing the Oni as an Ogre, but author-san still used Oni (鬼) to signify that, though. Ahhhhhhhhhh. Japanese so confusinnggggg. Well, we'll just have to see later. Oh, and here's a picture of the type of Ogre Author-san mentioned. Of course, without the skull getup.
