Chapter 80 -  Rank

"I'm surprised you didn't notice. That's right. My mana has continued to improve dramatically since I gave you the name, Ars."

 I knew it.

Father Paul does the naming every year at his church, but there is another church in another land, and of course, there will be other priests there.

If that's the case, then the pace of increase would be somewhat constant even if he did the naming only once every year.

 But then I appeared.

Perhaps the quality of my magic power has something to do with it.

Compared to the diluted magic of ordinary people, mine is much thicker, like a liquid that has been boiled down.

But that's probably not the only reason for Father Paul's sudden increase in mana.

 The Valkyries.

Valkyries are beings that I created and made as Familiars.

I only named one Valkyrie, though.

But all the Valkyries that were born after that were able to use magic.

 That means...

Could it be that all Valkyries have a parent-child relationship with me?

If that's the case, then even the mana of them must be flowing into Father Paul through my existence.

"The mana has not stopped rising ever since I gave you my name a few years ago. And so, my rank has now been raised."

"What? What is it? Rank?"

"That's right, my rank has been raised. From the looks of it, you apparently don't know what it's like to be raised to a higher rank."

"...... Yes, I have no idea. Do you have to level up to get a higher status?"

"Hmm. I'm not sure what a level is, but anyway, my rank has increased. You'll know immediately when your rank is raised. You receive new magic."

 Gaining new magic?

Is it like learning magic by leveling up?

 ...... No, it's not.

This is probably something like the spells [Wall Construction] or [Road Laying].

Magic that consumes more mana at one time than [Leveling] or [Shotgun] which cannot be used if the person has too little mana.

It's not just that the person with too little mana can't use them, but that they don't even understand that there are spells like [Wall Construction] and [Road Laying].

What would happen if a person with a low level of magic were to be blessed with an opportunity to increase their mana to a certain level?

It would be as sudden as if it was suddenly inputted into your brain.

Perhaps this is what Father Paul meant by a rise in rank.

When your mana rises to a certain level, you are able to use new magic.

If you didn't know any better, you could be forgiven for thinking that this was a gift from God.

"It's amazing. By the way, what exactly is this new magic that Father Paul can use?

"Healing Magic."

"Is that the kind of magic that heals wounds and such?"

"Yes, the literal name. And because of this advancement in rank, I was able to rise from my previous position as a priest to that of a bishop."

"Bishop? ...... That's great, isn't it?"

"Of course it is. Compared to priests, the number of bishops is much smaller, so the main job of a bishop is to manage an area of a certain size, not just a church like a priest would."

"Wow, isn't that a big promotion? Congratulations, Father Paul."

"I'm a bishop now, Ars."

"Oh, I'm sorry. Congratulations, Bishop Paul."

"Good. Now that we've talked about it, let's get down to business. Ars, would you like to entrust your future to me?"

"What? The future, mine?"

I mean, was all this a prelude to what was to come?

     Well, let's talk, Bishop-san.

You are reading story I Was Reincarnated as a Poor Farmer in a Different World, so I Decided to Make Bricks to Build a Castle at novel35.com

"Let me summarize your current situation. You killed and wounded a soldier guarding the tax collector who visited Barca and instigated the peasants. You even raided the neighboring village and brought the villagers there to fight with the army of the Fontana family. You then even killed the presiding Head of the House of Fontana, captured six knights alive, and unjustly occupied the land. There's no mistake about it, is there?"

"Wait, that's not fair. I'm not the only one who is at fault."

"There's more. In addition, you have stolen the Church's Naming Ceremony secrets without permission, misused them, and spread highly offensive magic to too many people."

 Geez.

As long as I had a land ownership permit, I thought I could get a good cause for the fight against the Fontana family itself.

I thought it would be a good excuse, even if it was a bit flawed.

However, I couldn't think of any excuse for the magic circle.

I'm vulnerable to being confronted with that.

"I'm not sure if you have any idea how to handle this situation, Ars."

"Well, to tell you the truth, I'm struggling to figure out how to fix the situation. I wasn't thinking about the church at all."

"Would you like me to come up with a solution for you?"

"Are you sure?

"It's simple. The most difficult thing for you right now would be to get into trouble with the church. Then think about what you can do to prevent that from happening."

 Hmm?

If there's a way to avoid a conflict with the church, that would be helpful, but I don't want the problem with the Fontana family to remain.

However, it wouldn't be a mistake to leave the Fontana family aside and finish the communication with the church first.

If anything, the church would be more troubled by the conflict.

"Hmmm, a way to avoid conflict with the church..."

The current problem lies in the fact that I've taken the liberty of naming the populace and increasing the number of people who can use magic.

I'm not sure if it's possible to deal with this, but the church might like to get rid of the Barca surname of the people who were named and make it impossible for them to use magic aside from Life Magic.

But I'm sure they know I've been making magic available to the villagers. ......

"Oh, you mean you want me to join the church?"

"That's funny. If you are a member of the church, you will be excommunicated if you are found to be able to use offensive magic. It means that the spiritual connection to you is open to everyone except normal church members."

"Seriously, I'm not even allowed to be ordained....."

"There's an easier way."

"Easier way? I'm sorry. I can't think of any.

"Then let me tell you. I'll tell you what. I will report to the church that it was not you who gave the villagers the surname Barca, but me.

 I wondered what he meant.

Could it be that he is protecting me?

But I don't understand why Father Paul, rather, a Bishop, would go to the trouble of defending me.

Is he asking me for something in return?

I felt a shiver run down my spine as I looked at Bishop Paul in front of me.

TLN: Damn, Paul's gettin' crafty.

And the author put a clever little trick there.

If you don't understand what the Rank is, then here's my explanation.

So, you know how some people that Ars named couldn't use certain spells (such as [Wall Construction] and [Road Laying]) because they didn't have enough mana? Well, also remember that those people didn't even know that the spells existed? Well, put that same mechanism here. When you get a certain amount of mana, you will rank up. The rank-ing up allows you to now know about spells that you originally couldn't use and you couldn't learn about.

Now, the rest of this explanation might be a spoiler, so read at your own risk.

Spoiler

Now that we know about the above-mentioned stuff, we can conclude that the person who founded the Church of the Holy Light and how much magic they knew will contribute to how much magic Ars will be able to use, because of the parent-child magic sharing relationship naming gives.

basically, when Ars ranks up, he'll probably know more magic that Bishop Paul knows, because Paul named him. Now, when Paul ranked up, he probably learned more magic that the person who named HIM knew. and it keeps going on like that until we arrive at the founder of the Church.
