As the sky darkens and the workers return home, the candle lights slowly glow from the windows of the small houses one after another like a small chain reaction. Chatters quieten down when the day ceases and night descends, but you can still enjoy company in pubs and bars. These places remain active until dawn arrives the next day.

Today I’m participating in a casual gathering my friends organised. It was to celebrate a rank promotion of my friend Ruby. She was offered temporary position as an information clerk at the merchant’s guild, but now she’s promoted to a permanent receptionist.

Ruby is a petite girl who’s actually 2 years older than me. She’d complain about her height and flat-chest often, because she’s often looked down upon for her childish looks. However, because she’s competent in her work and has a great temper, she never really suffers much beyond friendly teasing.

Ruby has blonde hair and ruby-red eyes. She ties her hair in twin tails.

That’s right. Ruby is a textbook tsundere loli character with slightly special eye colour. Her looks are above average, but not too beautiful. But we have to remember that looks are not everything that determines a person’s role in story. I learned that lesson well when Janet managed to fish the Duke.

However, her occupation is telling me she’s the NPC you see in games who give out information to newbies. As in, her job’s “boring”. Not much opportunities come to receptionists for them to shine and show their character.

Usually, what happens is the female lead being strong and independent, catching the eye of the male lead who goes “Wow! I’ve never seen a girl like you before!” Or… they’re so dirt poor but very optimistic the male lead who’s usually stinking rich goes “Wow, she’s so different from all the fake people around me”

With such factors in mind, I’d say Ruby is a mob character with lines i.e. a character who isn’t involved in the story, just there to give more information about the world or the characters.

When I enter the pub, I see the place is fully loaded with people. Utensils clacked against the plates, loud singing erupted every so often and beer mugs clashed with each other with enthusiastic cheers. It’s a busy day today.

From a table in far right corner, I see a hand waving at me and I grin.

“Sit here” Janet invites as she removes the coat she placed on the seat beside her.

I sit across Cecile and smile at Ruby sitting beside her. “Congratulations.”

Ruby shows a happy grin at my words. “My treat my treat!!! Order any drink!”

The long row of wooden table was shared between different friend groups, unlike a restaurant where you would have a small table to yourself. If you listen, you can hear the ongoing conversation from the other groups. It was truly somewhere meant to mingle and socialise, there was no privacy.

Alcohol was ordered recklessly by the three rowdy girls in a cheery mood while I sat back and enjoyed their drunk banter.

I will not drink today.

No, it’s not like I’m abstaining from alcohol or anything. I love alcohol, especially if it’s free. In this cold weather, it’d be great to warm my body. And I would love to get tipsy to the degree where I find everything pointlessly funny.

[A/N: She’s 15. But medieval fantasy worlds don’t care about age limit in alcohol]

What’s preventing me from drinking is also the reason why the bar is popular today. I glance at the group beside me to see 4 handsome males in knight armour just casually chatting and drinking. They have a combination of pastel coloured hairs, emitting these nonchalant cool vibes while the surrounding females in the pub sneaked glances at their every muscle movement.

“Psst. I heard they’re the 4 talent knights scouted by the King himself.” Ruby says when she sees me looking at them. “Each of them can fight 100 people on their own and win unscathed. Truly inhumane skills!! I heard they’ll each lead a royal knight squadron soon.”

Sis takes her job too seriously as an informative NPC... I appreciate your effort, but I didn't ask.

“I see” I nod. There’s no harm in looking at them more since it’s my job as a mob anyway, so I stare at them to observe and prepare for any situation that might arise.

“You’re not drinking today?” Cecile asks, raising one of her bushy eyebrows. Her freckled cheeks flushed red from one too many cups of alcohol.

“No, I’ll make sure you all get home safely.”

“Awww! Thanks for looking after us!” Janet hugs me from the side. Ruby only laughs along.

The case is that female leads start finding trouble with male leads when they’re piss drunk. Either going on one night stands, or jumping into the wrong beds, or vomiting on their expensive clothes, or drunken kiss, etc etc etc — female leads in a drunk condition do the stupidest shit you can come up with.

What’s more, they never remember it next morning. They go :O like they did nothing wrong.

Then BAM! You’re in the clutches of the male lead and you’ll never escape that labyrinth. I shook my head at the horrifying thought.

As the night passes and the celebrations slows to a stop, I support Cecile and Ruby with each of my shoulders as they drag their legs on the ground.

I look back to see the one of the four handsome knights being hugged by a drunk purple-haired girl from his waist. I check Ruby who keeps kissing my shoulders with her eyes closed, letting out a few “Nnhhnnnn” whenever she takes a step.

…… What’s with that awfully seductive moan?

Where’s Janet? Her boyfriend picked her up as soon as we finished, like he was roaming around the pub waiting for that moment. She drunkenly kissed him on the cheeks sloppily but he didn’t mind, his eyes only filled with a hot feverish gaze.

I hope she can walk properly tomorrow.
