My parents were respected by many. They were Heroes of the fourth highest Rank, often called C-Rank Heroes by ordinary people. But, those people didn’t know my parents' real personalities.

My house could be called wealthy, but not too rich that I could ask for anything. It was more like we had enough money to spend on vacation each year on top of fulfilling daily necessities.

People would think that I was blessed for having such a family. But no, my parents didn’t love each other; they only married and had me because they wanted to look good in society, to further increase their fame.

As a result, they neglected me and only met me sometimes to educate me for the sake of their appearance.

They also put a lot of their expectations on me because they couldn’t advance to being B-Rank Heroes. So they forced me to train myself, learn history, and hope I would awaken a good Unique when I turned 18 to fulfill their dream and ambitions of being famous Heroes.

Unique was a dress or clothes with a special ability that a person could awaken when they turned 18. Obviously, not every person would be able to awaken a Unique.

Each person’s ability made them different from each other. In addition, even similar abilities had different effects and restrictions.

To use the power of Unique, energy called Psion was needed. That energy was abundant in the atmosphere as well as a person's body.

Each person had a different limit of storing Psion in their body. That limit was divided into a few ranks, from F to S.

My mother could use Telekinesis and move an object with her mind, while my father had super strength that allowed him to lift even a car. My mother's Unique was in the form of a green hair clip on her dark hair, while my father was in the form of black gloves.

Both were deemed to have C-Rank Psion capacities, one of the reasons why they couldn’t advance to being B-Rank Heroes.

They were partners and defeated Villains together as Heroes.

My life was not that good, but it was also not bad because my parents still cared and ate breakfast with me sometimes. Today was one of those rare days.

“Noah, how is the progress of your martial arts training?” My mother asked me as she wiped her mouth with a napkin.

Her low voice was intimidating to me. I had heard her voice for as long as I could remember, but a sharp pain would definitely follow suit each time. I have been told that lying was not good, so I always answered her questions honestly.

“Yes, mother. Unfortunately, I have made no progress with my martial arts training.”

After I answered, my mother suddenly frowned, and my father slammed the table hard.

Bam!

“You!” He shouted as he pointed his index finger at me. “Last week, you said you have no progress, and now it’s still the same?! How can you be a Hero if you make no progress in your training?!”

“Yes. I am sorry.” I quietly apologized. At least they wouldn’t hit me as hard as usual if I apologized quietly. It was something that I learned after getting hit a few times.

My father’s body was muscular and big, and he appeared to be scary with his short black hair and sharp eyes. I always shrank in fear every time he yelled at me, and this time wasn’t an exception.

“Useless!” My father shouted. “How can you be useless? If you don’t get a good Unique tomorrow, I swear I will lock you in the basement! I won’t even let you step outside it, nor enter the Hero School that you dreamed of!”

“Yes, father.”

“Listen here…”

The breakfast continued with me being scolded as usual by my parents. Our servants only looked at me with pity. As much as they wanted to help, they knew that their positions didn’t allow them to.

It continued for a good 30 minutes before my parents left to do their Hero jobs. They had some campaigns in elementary school to further boost their popularity among the children today, and I heaved a sigh of relief.

I went back to my room to study more about Unique. My room was my only heaven in this house. While being only 5x4 meters, a bit small for a big mansion, I had all I needed here.

A bed, a desk, and a bookshelf with a lot of books that my parents bought me to study.

I immediately jumped on my bed and looked at the ceiling. I tried to grab it with my hand, but it seemed so far away.

“This life sucks…” I muttered with no one listening. “This world is built on a lie. Those Heroes are not Heroes at all, just a bunch of hypocrites.”

I want to end this, this hypocrisy. This tragedy called life.

What could I say? I did all of this to survive. If I ran away from this house, I could as well get killed by a random villain due to me not having any Unique yet. Why did I say so? Because the only place I could hide was in the slum.

If the police found me, I would be taken back to this house because what the public knew about my parents was that they were respectable Heroes.

So, I could only try to hold on.

“If only this world is destroyed… I will be really happy.”

I looked at my desk before sighing. It was just morning, and I needed to study. If the maid found me lying on my bed, they would definitely report it to my parents, and I would be punched or hit until they were satisfied.

“Well…” I approached the desk and sat on the chair to study. “… I can only preserve.”

The next day, I woke up early in the morning and took a shower.

Today was the most important day in my life. A decision whether I should be locked in the basement or be set free. Free in accordance with my father’s will, not real freedom, but still better than being chained inside this house.

From where we came from, District 1, which was located in a country called Japan, everything started at 8 AM. The ceremony to grant a Unique, which was held in the City Center, wasn’t an exception.

However, my parents told me to prepare myself at 6 AM. I didn’t really know their intention, but I could somehow guess that they bribed the employees of City Center to let me have my ceremony first when the City Center was empty of people.

Probably, they did it so they could somehow hide the fact that I had no Unique in case I failed to awaken one. What a joke. However, I couldn’t say it to them. I was afraid of getting hit. It hurts. And I was not too fond of it.

I looked at my reflection in the mirror. Lean stature, black eyes, and black hair. Nothing too abnormal with my appearance. All in all, I looked like an ordinary boy.

“I just hope that I have a decent Unique… No. Please let me have a decent Unique.”

And I went out of my room to the car that was already waiting in front of the house with my parents waiting inside. I quietly entered the car and listened to their preach about how I would Awaken a good Unique and had a high Psion capacity to be a great Hero and elevate their status.

I was sick of hearing this, so I just nodded automatically. It was the skill I developed over the years: ignoring the preaching and nodding like a good kid. A long name, but a useful one to have.

We arrived at a big building that looked like a stadium. It had only two floors, but big enough to fit a lot of people. The Unique granting ceremony would be held in this place everyday at once at 8 AM.

There was only one person in charge of the ceremony. He was the only person who could awaken Unique in this district and could only do it once a day. The ceremony affected everyone in the building, so conducting it once a day was enough.

But, that information seemed to be a lie too.

It seemed like the children of Heroes got special treatment and got to conduct their Unique Awakening Ceremony privately. And the person in charge of the ceremony could Awaken Unique a few times, without limit.

Another lie.

I was taken into a private room inside the building with my parents. Inside, a priest-looking middle-aged man was sitting on a couch, and he spoke with a voice that sounded like a good man.

“Please sit here, Mr. Murata, Mrs. Ayaka. And, you must be Noah, correct?”

I nodded at the man’s words, and my father continued.

“Hahaha, you’re correct. Please forgive me. My son is a little shy, Mr. Yuzuki.”

“Understandable. A lot of children, especially teens, are wary of strangers. Please don’t worry about it.”

“Thank you, Mr. Yuzuki. Also, without further ado, can you please try to Awaken my son’s Unique? I believe he will have a good one, considering how diligent he is in studying.”

“Let’s hope so, Mr. Murata. Well then…”

The middle-aged man looked at me as he pulled out a book with the words ‘Awaken’ written on the cover. He then gestured to me to approach him, which I did without hesitation.

This man is a kind man. I thought as I stopped in front of him.

Due to me being in a bad situation for all I could remember, I was sensitive to gaze and could discern which one had bad intentions against me in a single glance.

And this Mr. Yuzuki didn’t have ill intent while looking at me. His eyes were smiling, but he didn’t notice that my parents weren’t good people as he thought they were.

“Now then, I will begin.”

Mr. Yuzuki opened his book, and words flew out from it, surrounding me. It only lasted for a second before the words faded out, and Mr. Yuzuki’s expression became sad.

I had a terrible feeling when I looked at his expression. And it was further strengthened by my mother’s words.

“H-How is it, Mr. Yuzuki. Is the Awakening a success?” She asked. Her anxiousness was clear.

“About that…” Mr. Yuzuki closed the book with a bam. The atmosphere tensed.

I didn’t need to hear the result, as I already knew about it while looking at Mr. Yuzuki’s expression. And it was made clear when he continued.

“Your son, Noah, has no Unique. The Awakening Ceremony is a Failure.”

At that time, I swore I could hear the world around me shattered into pieces like broken glasses.
