Chapter 41: Trust(5)

It was a Monday morning when I get a call from Korra. Apparently, she wanted to resume her training.

I got to Air Temple Island and saw Korra ready for a new sparing session.

While we were fighting, I started to question her about her time with Tarrlok and his brave new squad.

"So did you enjoy your time spend with Tarrlok?"

"It was fun at first, me and Tarrlok were a pretty good team, but in the end, it didn't work out."

"Why? I thought you like to make a difference, what changed?"

"It just didn't work out! Why are you so interested in this?"

"Patience, I'm getting there. You know I like to make people see my point before I tell them what it is exactly. Now, please if you would be so kind to tell me?"

"Fine! It just didn't work out, I finally understood that the task force wasn't where I was supposed to be, end of the story, it's not some grand reason or some master plan, I just finally realize that I didn't fit in there."

She then fire bends at me in anger. I dodge while thinking.

'Finally, I hit a nerve! It took much less than I imagine. I guess Tenzin was right when he said she was still immature.'

I slide under the flame and chi block her arm then I restrain her.

"Sit. I'm going to tell you a story."

"Why? We have only just begun, why to stop now?"

"Korra, I'm going to be real with you. You're my friend and it pains me to see you going through something that you can't handle on your own. I just want to help."

"How do you know that I'm dealing through something and that I can't deal with it on my own?!?!"

"Korra, you're the most amazing person I ever saw in my life. You're the most honest and kind person I ever meet and I'm proud to be your friend."

She looks at me bewildered not knowing what to say. She didn't expect me to compliment her. All her life all she did was to train. She didn't have friends, she had mentors, she didn't have children to play with, she had sparing partners. All the people in her life expected her to shoulder the world, they didn't figure out that she was a kid before she was an avatar. This was the first time in her life that she was called a friend, this was the first time someone her age praised her without her doing anything or expecting anything of her.

"All I want you to do is listen to me for a few minutes. Nothing more, I just want to tell you a story about my time with the Equalists. Didn't you ask me once to tell you and I refused to tell you anything too in-depth? Isn't this your best opportunity to find how it was?

"Do you know what the hardest thing I ever was?"

"No."

"Can you guess?"

"Fight a bender for the first time I think?"

"No, funny enough I wasn't worried at all about that, I was so well trained that I didn't have the tiniest amount of fear holding me back. The moment I felt fear the most was during training. The Equalists have a certain way to deal with benders usually.

The novices are taught a formation that is composed of five people, you need to trust the other four people in your team with your life because out there, there can't be any place for mistrust between you and your team because this could kill you and your team.

So you can imagine my feelings when my master showed me, my team. I didn't want anybody to help me, I didn't trust them, hell I barely trusted my friends to watch my back, to begin with. Now master just told me that from now on I would need to count on them, what do you think my first reaction was?"

"I don't know you made the best with what you had?"

"Ohh... Hell no, the first thing I did was go to master and complained like he was sending me to my death. I gave him so many reasons why this was a bad idea but he just wouldn't listen to me. What could I do, he was my master, after all, I trusted him so I gritted my teeth and tried my best.

Things started rough. I was by far more skilled than them. I could beat all of them with ease, so I started to think... Why do I need them? Can't I do things better alone? How could I let those losers watch my back?

I keep questioning myself and made plans after plans to get rid of them and get a more competent team at least if I couldn't go solo on missions and so the first mission came with them came. It all went all and good but then somebody sneaked behind me. I was wide open and he was ready to use water bending to stab me. When I finally noticed him I thought that that was the of me when suddenly a person pushed me from the path of the icicle. It was my teammate. He got injured so that he could save me. He didn't know me well, I didn't know him well, yet he still risked his life.

From that moment on I had complete trust in them. If they were ready to risk their lives to save me I would do the same, this is the first time I trusted someone with the most precious thing I have, my life. They fought beside me numerous times and we went through thick and thin together and we weren't even friends we were comrades."

"It's a nice story and all but what are trying to tell me?"

"Trust a fragile thing, it can easily be broken and it's hard to acquire. It needs the person that starts this bond to have blind faith that and make a leap in the abyss. Then the other person must do the same thing, for a bond of trust to be built there is a need for both persons to make a leap of faith.

Korra I consider you my friend and I trust you, I told you about my secret, I made my leap all I want you is to do the same, all I want is for you to have a little faith and jump."
