Chapter 10: Short Story – The Tragedy of Honoka Airi

It was my first day at National High School when I, Honoka Airi, was placed into class 1-E with my best friend Emi. I had heard that the classes were ranked based off something but it didn't matter to me, all I cared about was that I was with Emi.

I just wanted to have a happy school life.

Emi and I would stick together till the end, we would experience everything we wanted. We would go and karaoke, party, study, play and graduate together.

That was all I wanted.

Why did it have to all end like this?

'Emi, what are we going to do? I've tried contacting some of the upper-ranked classed but they all say that they're loaning points to class 1-B'

'I don't know...'

It was the afternoon of the 20th. It was a sunny day, however, the atmosphere of the class was all but warm. People abandoned their friends, people gave up hope. However, I won't allow that to happen to us. No matter what I have to do, we will pass this exam.

I had no idea how I was going to get the points I needed.

I didn't understand, how did such unpleasant students such as Yamada and Nendo get all of those points? They were talking about how they were broke and suddenly they just jump up the rankings... I don't understand.

'Hey, Honoka, how many points do you have?'

'I've got 29,783 points.'

'Okay.'

She suddenly began tapping her phone.

'Emi, what are you doing?'

'Don't worry about it.'

She seemed to be typing something. At the time, I should've known, I should've stopped her. It wasn't until several hours later when I realised what she had done.

For the rest of the day, we played as usual. She didn't act strangely at all. We walked back to the dorms and we chatted on the bed of almost an hour straight. Any topic that came to mind, we would talk about it. What type of boys we likes, our favourite facility at the school, our best memories, the haircut of the teachers we saw; anything.

'This is our last day at this school.' I said.

'Honoka, can you promise me something?'

'What?'

She smiled and got off the bed. The carpet thumped as her feet landed on the ground. In a few moments, she was at the door.

'Honoka, check your bank account.' As soon as she said that, she walked out the door, I noticed tears building up on her eyes.

'Wait, what did you do?'

However, at that point, it was already too late.
