Hello. My name is Sofia Akateyama. Well, it was.
That’s because she's dead.
I’m not speaking through an Ouija Board or a demonic tool. The story is a bit more complicated.
I have been reincarnated in the world of my favorite Otome game! So, logic wouldn’t say Sofia Akateyama still exists.
I saw her die, so it only makes sense that it’s like that. Still, I keep thinking that person is me. My personality hasn’t changed at all.
I guess we can say she still exists in my memory. Or is that too cheesy? Too bad.
Having said that, in my past life I had a double ethnicity. My father was Japanese, my mother was Italian. I lived in a limbo between these two countries for a very long time.
Not because they loved me so much that they wanted me to see both those beautiful countries, but because they divorced and lived in different places.
It might be embarrassing to say but this is the experience that marked my life the most, especially the way in which both tried to create a new family, maybe out of jealousy, maybe out of pain.
I love — maybe I loved — mom and I loved dad. It’s impossible to love them while they’re together, though.
It’s equally impossible to love their choices. The people that they have remarried with hardly loved them, abused their broken hearts and made my life a living hell.
So they got back together. At that point I was an adult at the age of sixteen, but it was much worse than anything I had ever experienced.
They demanded that I was happy while they created a fantasy world in which they were too. They sweetly lied without regard while having other lovers and forced me to stay with them. Then, I died.
Maybe I’m being overly dramatic. After all, there were some things even I liked! Out of all of them, literature.
In Italy I had read any book I could find, the same thing happened in Japan.
That’s how I discovered the idyllic world of mangas and light novels. Best day of my life.
Lies. That prize goes to the warm day in April in which I discovered a Yuri Otome Game based on a manga I had read, the only way to kill time I had which wasn’t a book.
The game was called “Shirokaya High School!” The exclamation mark is questionable, considering it’s a story so dark that the fables of the Grimm brothers are definitely full of envy.
Why were the developers so exalted?
The game is played as Anais Hirazawa, the story’s heroine and main character, as she is eighteen years old in her last year of high school. She has short and bobbed hair, quite cute green eyes, a stupid smirk and one of the most annoying personalities I have ever witnessed.
It’s obvious that she isn’t my favorite character, right?

The medal goes to the villainess, Akari Sannohiro. The name already gives chills, doesn’t it? Calm down, stop clapping your hands and I will talk about her.
She has long black hair, — in reality they’re dark purple, as manga and game developers are addicted to giving weird hair colours to their characters for some reason — extremely cute blue eyes, she never smiles and is very tall and physically strong, so much that she’s envied by most men.
I don’t swing that way. I mean, I don’t think I swing in any way, but it would be an understatement to say I loved her. She was my favourite character of all time and most of it had to do with her personality.
During the game, Akari is violent, manipulative, cruel beyond belief, dishonest and unhappy. I’m not a masochist! Let me finish. She gets in the way of the protagonist’s happiness, while the latter is helped by four secondary heroines.
Hanaki Konotsuya, Anais’s childhood friend. An apparently extroverted and fun girl.
Lana Harumaki, the school president. She embodies discipline and order but hides a few secrets.
Miyuri Honomako, Anais’s classmate and her best friend. She seems almost apathetic, but it’s worse.
Then there’s Sofia Tanarako, who has my same name and is the only sane character! Originally a timid and cute character, I refuse to be as sane as her.
It almost seems like in the story Akari gets in the way for the sake of it. Still, she doesn’t have any good ending in the game! There are four possible outcomes for her, linked to the favour the protagonist receives from the four heroines.
Anais becomes the girlfriend of the secondary character that she loves most, basically. But Akari...
If you prefer Hanaki, Akari is killed. Nobody knows why or how, it seems like the developer didn’t think about it too much.
If your preference falls towards Lana, the latter will kick Akari out of the school.
If your choice is Miyuri, Akari leaves the country suddenly.
If you choose Sofia, she abandons life.
You heard me. This last ending made me think a lot. The reasons are not that well explained inside of the game and it seems like a pleasant ending because the main opposition is dead, but it’s not that easy.
Akari kills herself because of what Sofia tells her. Having read the dialogue, I think it’s the best, most dramatic moment in the entire game! It made me completely change my mind about the villainess. Actually, I don't want to live it though.
Oh! There’s also another reason. As you know, the game starts in the last year of high school. In reality, a few flashbacks bring the player two years before the start of the game.
There you can see a younger Akari, a completely different person.
A simple, extroverted, cute and gentle person… I always wondered what had changed during that time.
As I was telling you, I was reincarnated. Sofia Akayetama, now a mere memory, is now Sofia Tanarako.
And I will uncover the entire story.
Most importantly, I’ll make sure Akari never changes.
