I could hear her breathe a deep sigh.
She was exhausted.
I buried my face in my mother’s palm.
‘She wouldn’t have chosen just anyone. There must have been a reason why my mom was disappointed.’
There was a sound of silence.
Alexid was right. My parents couldn’t have had a better eye for people than I.
Nevertheless, it kept bothering me so there had to be a reason for my mother to feel so sorry for Gerald.
My mother’s sweet voice rang in my ears as she swept my hair and put me to sleep.
“But it was a relief, at least. I needed to find Lulu a husband who could protect her.”
Mom, what is Gerald hiding from me? I really don’t know. Does he even love me now?

The story that almost got Louella into big trouble was also told by Gerald.
Teilon was working in Hwangseong, the capital city of the country. The city was overflowing with people and the criminals were able to escape the guards.
Gerald looked out the window with a nervous look on his face.
‘I feel it all the time.’
In this world, fate was not on Gerald’s side. In his first life, fate brutally took Louella away from him. In his second life, he was the one that made her sick.
Gerald was always desperate about everything because he thought he could lose Louella at any moment.
[That’s right]
Gerald raised his head. He was the only one with the courage, when an unknown voice came.
[Fate is not on your side]
It sounded like the voice was scratching the floor. It was the same voice he heard underneath the abyss.
[I’m going to test you constantly. I’ll take the thing most precious to you away from you. Will this be the end?]
Gerald clenched his teeth.
“Who are you?”
[I’m Uroboros. The devil in your body, the god, the savior who will save you. Or lead to destruction.]
His voice broke into a grinning smile.
Gerald’s pupils dilated.
Uroboros?
The bracelet wrapped around Gerald’s wrist was shining purple. It usually was not revealed.
Gerald wrapped his hand around the hot bracelet.
[I can help you, Gerald]
A sweet voice spilled out.
[I have the power to save you from this world’s tests.]
“You must want something from me,” Gerald replied coldly.
There was something too big to fall for just a whisper.
Louella was Gerald’s everything.
[Let me go. Free me from the abyss.]
“It’s something I can’t do.”
[No, only you can do it. Gerald, the world wouldn’t even test you if you couldn’t. It’d let you live a normal life.]
Gerald’s lips quivered. He doesn’t understand what the hell he was talking about.
He was chosen by the world? He had never thought of that before.
He thought that all of the misfortunes that visited Gerald were just that, his misfortunes. Life was, by no means, a fair thing.
[You’re the only one who can unseal it. This world must take away the most precious thing from you]
He wanted to shout that he was just spouting nonsense, but his mouth wouldn’t open.
Gerald looked out in a daze.
The world was quickly passing Gerald by. Gerald missed Louella every time.
Again, Louella was preparing to leave Gerald.
[Let me go and you leave with what’s most precious to you]
Uroboros was the worst monster in the world. He was called the king of monsters and was a snake. Or a dragon.
Uroboros invaded the world with the monsters who followed him. Leander and Logan stepped up to drive out the monsters and regain their light.
They succeeded in regaining the light with the royal family called by God.
Uroboros was trapped in the abyss, and the unprocessed monsters became Leander’s share.
This was the legend that was being told.
[Haven’t you ever doubted it?]

The voice infused Gerald with suspicion.
[Why is the monster wave happening? Why couldn’t the people kill me.]
Gerald’s shoulder shook.
[The truth always hits the back of his head]
The voice died down.
[Think carefully. Before you lose everything]
Gerald dropped his hand from his cold wrist. His fingertips were shaking.
The carriage was still going on its way as if nothing had happened. Louella was still fine.
He couldn’t let go of his principles and be swayed like this. Gerald’s eyes shone coldly. If there’s anything hidden, he thought that it was something he could find out.
Gerald tapped on the carriage seat. He had to meet someone before he went to see Louella.
“Let’s go to the academy.”
“Yes, my lord.”
Gerald closed his trembling eyes.

“Grandpa Roland.”
“Oh, Gerald! You asked me if you could leave the academy, but I think you come here more often. I heard you came here not too long ago, right?” Roland greeted Gerald. “Grandson.”
“I have a question.”
Realizing Gerald was strangely nervous, Roland sent all of his secretaries away.
“What’s going on?”
Roland took off his glasses and sat on the sofa.
Gerald bowed his head. He didn’t know what to talk about at first. His mind got tangled up in a random way.
“Gerald.” Roland touched Gerald’s tired-looking shoulder. “What’s going on, huh?”
“There was a big war in the past, and I understand that an empire was established.”
“Yes.” Roland nodded.
It was a mythical story that everyone knew.
“And Logan was in charge of guarding the door.”
“I know he was.”
“Is there a secret behind it?”
Roland was the most knowledgeable man in the Empire.
Gerald knew this answer and believed that if there was something else he would have to know, Roland was the only answer.
Roland stared at Gerald with deep eyes. “Do you know that history is always cut to the taste of the victor? There’s a lot of distorted facts.”
Gerald nodded.
“So the recorded history is called the history of the victors. But Gerald. History has losers, too. They have reasons and circumstances.”
Roland rose from his seat and poured the tea on the tray himself. Roland gave Gerald a hot steaming tea, “Drink it. It will calm you down.”
Gerald wrapped the cup in his palm.
“There must be a story that you wanted to hear, right, Gerald?” Roland laid his hands on his lap. “Where should I start talking?”
Roland’s voice sank. There was incredible pressure on him as he was always smiling.
“…… It was the snake that was born out of chaos in the beginning. It was a twin snake called Uroboros.”
Gerald raised his head.
One of them was white sand and the other was black sand. They had wings and later grew into an adult, a dragon. In the chaos, the twins grew bored and began to make other things.”
Gerald thought that there would be an answer in Roland’s story.
“The black Uroboros created a man. A creature with knowledge and intelligence. And the white Uroboros created monsters.”
Roland’s voice fell gently. Gerald blinked. Two snakes, flashing yellow eyes that seemed to reflect the dark vision.
“White Uroboros was very jealous. And he was jealous of the things that Black Uroboros created. Monsters were dull and unintelligent. Humans, by comparison, were greedy and smart instead. White Uroboros wanted to have humans that were created by black magic.”
White Uroboros.
Gerald recalled a white dragon carved in the temple. Their history began with the worship of white dragons.
“Black Uroboros recognized his greed. And they separated the world where the two creatures lived. At first, everyone thought it was okay, but the black Uroboros watched humans achieve civilization. He created new life forms and co-existed with them.”
Gerald stared at the cooling cup. The liquid that painted the waves was filled in. It seemed like a deep emotion in Gerald’s mind.
The presence of Uroboros, who threw a stone at it, was depicted in the liquid.
The white Uroboros left the randomly growing monsters unattended. He stopped loving the creatures he created. The white Uroboros, who was easily fed up, got tired of his creations again and began to covet the world of black things. The white Uroboros thought he should take away the black one.”
Gerald’s hand on the teacup slid down.
So that started the Monster Wave. The white Uroboros began to covet the black Uroboros, and the war began. The monsters invaded the human world and the black Uroboros decided to protect them.”
Was it the white dragon or the black dragon that fell asleep in the ring?
Gerald closed his eyes tightly.
