A few days later.

“What the hell happened in the head maid’s room?”

Alicia asked me with a sudden expression of friendliness.

“How did the maid get kicked out of the castle? Because they’re happy, the other maids are screaming and going crazy.”

As she said, after that day, the maid who reigned above the maid had to pack her belongings and leave the castle.

When she left without any explanations or answers even when asked why, everyone was confused as to what had happened.

Because neither the head maid nor I could say anything about that day, so the maids played their imaginations among themselves.

The maids have been at peace since that day, but I can sense them secretly staring at me.

Of course, I didn’t treat them well, nor did I force a smile and pretend to be friendly.

They appeared to be afraid that if they became involved with me, they would become like that maid.

As a result, I’ve become more comfortable, and I’ve now created a comfortable work environment in which I can easily do my job.

Every day, I would wake up to the morning bell, yawn, pull an empty cart, and go to bed as if I were being raised.

Oh, right. Since that day, one thing has changed in my daily life.

Alicia will follow me around whenever she has time.

She started coming to my bed after work like a sparrow stopping by a mill.

Today, she comes in and talks even before the day begins.

“That I… Can I speak comfortably?”

“How do you do something that’s not comfortable?”

“You’re right.”

She covered her mouth and smiled as she thought it was a strange question.

“But were you really the Lord’s wife? It’s the first time I’ve spoken with a high-ranking person.”

I made the bed without answering.

She hesitated and asked again.

“The Grand Duke to the Lord… No, uh, if your husband died… So you don’t have any other family?”

Alicia asked, looking into my eyes with a face as if she was guilty to death.

“No.”

“Oh, I see. I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay.”

She quickly changed the subject after I spoke bluntly.

“That… Did you really see the Grand Duke in front of you?”

“Yes.”

“I’ve never seen him. Did he look like a monster with horns on his head?”

I finally laughed when I saw her with her eyes wide open and asked seriously.

It’s not easy to meet the Grand Duke as a maid in this spacious castle.

Perhaps there are people who have never seen him even when they stayed in the same castle in their lifetime. That was why she was so curious.

I looked into the air as if recalling a memory and answered.

“I think he looked better than I thought. I couldn’t take a closer look because I was so busy.”

“Wow, you have a strong heart. I would have passed out from a heart attack as soon as I saw him.”

A small smile broke out on my lips, and Alicia smiled wider.

The sunlight coming through the wooden window shattered and glistened on Alicia’s smiling face.

Just looking at it makes my heart warm as if it were comforting me.

Has there ever been such a thing as a friend in this world?

Even after my grandfather died, I felt empty thinking that I was completely alone…

I wonder if that kind of heart is unexpectedly being healed little by little in this world.

Alicia looked out the window.

“The weather is very nice today. It’s perfect if you’re going to go play in the mountains behind and eat something delicious! Ah. I really hate to work.”

It reminded me of college friends telling me to go out and play outside of lectures.

Could it be possible to go back to reality?

As I was thinking about it, I wondered if I really wanted to go back.

When I got back, my grandfather was gone, and no one was waiting for me at home. Haa.

I finished making the bed, hiding my gloomy feeling.

In the large office room with a heavy scent of mahogany, only the rustling sound and the movement of quills could be heard.

Tak-

Shiraz lowered his quill aloud and looked back at Huey as if he had suddenly remembered something.

“Then what happened to that woman? That traitor’s little wife.”

“Are you talking about Lord Willinger?”

“Ah. Yeah.”

Huey remembered the maid he had met in the castle last time.

She was noticeable no matter how much she dressed as a maid, and the Grand Duke’s insensitivity was surprising.

‘But. He may not have noticed that because he was doing such a stupid thing.’

He shook his head and replied politely.

“She works as a maid in the castle.”

At Huey’s answer, Shiraz stopped what he was doing and looked at him.

“She is working as a maid?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Huey was speechless.

‘The Grand Duke obviously ordered me to take her as a maid, but has he forgotten?’

Huey’s bewildered reply slowly slowed down.

“That is… They say she is assigned to the kitchen and manages food ingredients.”

Shiraz’s face looked more startled than before.

“That woman?”

“Yes? Yes…”

Shiraz let out a bewildered sigh.

He had heard that if not being a maid, the most difficult job in the castle was managing food ingredients. They would be treated almost like slaves.

Shiraz laughed out loud as if it was unexpected.

He sensed it even then, but she was unlike any other woman he had ever seen.

“So, you’re working as a maid in my castle now?”

He muttered to himself again.

He brought her here to do chores, but that was the equivalent of telling a noblewoman to die.

No, it was more insulting than just killing.

‘I’d rather be killed together with my husband!’ He thought that she must have committed suicide by throwing such a curse, or was caught and killed while running away.

“She is a strange woman.”

When the Grand Duke showed considerable interest in her, Huey continued quietly.

“Do you remember the woman who dropped the apple last time?”

As soon as Shiraz heard those words, no way! He looked at Huey with bewildered eyes.

A woman covered in dust and dressed in a rag-like maid outfit. He remembered the maid, who was afraid to even make eye contact with him.

“Don’t tell me that the maid was the Lord’s wife at the time.”

“You’re right.”

“Ha!”

Shiraz recalled that day and tried to remember the woman’s face even a little.

He was the one who had never looked at the faces of the people below him properly.

He could only vaguely remember how she opened her apron in surprise when he threw an apple.

“I had no idea.”

“Actually, I got to check her background a little bit. It’s a little uncomfortable to bring her to the castle without any information.”

“Tell me.”

Shiraz pushed the documents he was looking at with interest to one side and folded his arms.

“After conducting an investigation, I discovered that her father was a low-ranking nobleman in the Duchy of Mahat. He studied medicine and moved to Willinger’s estate to raise his daughter on his own. Her mother died early, nothing else special.”

“Hmm. She was the only daughter of a widower.”

“So it was even stranger.”

Shiraz raised his gaze as if asking what he meant.

“The Willinger I know is a daring person who would not have brought his wife from just anywhere.”

“I heard that.”

“It turned out that there was a woman who was actually posing as a wife. So that woman must have been the Lord’s real wife.”

Shiraz, who had learned of the secret circumstances, chuckled as if he now understood her situation.

“So she left her husband and ran away without looking back. He was an enemy, not a husband.”

Huey nodded cautiously and continued.

“The situation may be different, but it happens quite a bit even among the royal family and nobles. It is not uncommon to have two or three mistresses while having a wife…”

He realized that he had made a slip of the tongue before he had finished.

He stopped breathing in panic and examined the Grand Duke’s complexion.

‘What a fool. How dare you say such a careless thing!’

He berated himself.

Unsurprisingly, the Grand Duke’s complexion became cold. It was already too late even if he regretted it because he brought out a taboo word.

The Grand Duke spoke in a voice that seemed to have completely excluded his emotions.

“So the Lord’s wife is still living with the maids?”

Huey, who was extremely nervous, responded with a sigh of relief.

“Yes. It is said that no one noticed that she was a noble. But…”

Shiraz stared at Huey with sharp eyes.

“It seems that there was a small commotion a while ago. It is said that at that time, she called out the Grand Duke and sent another maid out of the castle. Of course, I can’t fully believe what they say.”

Shiraz smiled as if it was ridiculous when he heard that.

“She had something in mind. She is a clever woman.”

It was true that he was interested in her for a while because she was doing well as a maid.

But then a disgusting disappointment took its place.

She dropped an apple in front of him not long ago and caught his attention, and he mistook it for her shallow count, which added to his contempt.

He hated women who tried to use their power and position in the castle to fill their own interests.

His mother was just such a woman.

The quill pen he was holding was splattered and broken in two.
