Rei Mura stared at himself in the mirror, his eyes tracing the curves of his pale face, his fingers brushing through his unruly green hair. His father and older brother had already left for work, and the house was still and quiet. With a tired sigh, he turned away from the mirror and began to dress for school. He pulled on a pale blue shirt and a pair of trousers, fastening a belt around his waist and tucking the shirt in. He grabbed a green tie from the top drawer of his wardrobe and quickly knotted it around his neck, tugging at the edges until it was perfectly straight.

Rei grabbed his bag from the table and flung it over his shoulder, pausing again to examine his reflection in the mirror. He was a tall, lanky figure with a head of wild green hair, a pale face and dark eyes that seemed to always be shadowed with a hint of sadness. He had often been told he looked like his mother, though he had never had the chance to meet her.

His eart felt heavy as he thought of his mother, but he forced himself to turn away from the mirror and leave the room. He made his way down the hallway, his steps echoing through the empty house, and soon he was outside, the sun already climbing over the horizon. Rei took a deep breath of the crisp morning air and began the walk to school.

The streets of the town were quiet, the shops and cafes all locked up and the streetlights still on, casting a dull glow on the road. Rei walked slowly, his mind filled with thoughts of the day ahead and the endless pile of homework he would have to face that night. He paused by a large oak tree, running his fingertips over its rough bark before continuing.

As Rei neared the school gates, he felt his stomach tighten at the thought of all the other students, the teachers and the classes he would soon have to attend. He took a deep breath and forced himself to keep walking. Soon enough, he was standing in the school yard, the crowd of students already gathered, their voices echoing around the courtyard like the cawing of crows. Rei scanned the faces for a friendly one, but soon gave up and trudged towards the entrance hall, head held low.

The morning classes passed quickly, and Rei found himself relieved to be outside at lunchtime. He took a seat on the grass beneath the large oak tree, his bag sitting beside him, and closed his eyes for a moment, allowing the warm sunlight to wash over him.

Rei opened his eyes and glanced around, taking in the school buildings, the small playground and the gathering of students. He could see them talking and laughing, and he wished he could join in with them. But he felt so different, so alone. He was the only one with green hair, the only one without friends.

He took a deep breath and continued to watch the other students, a sense of longing filling his heart. He had never felt this way before, and he knew he had to find a way to fit in, to feel a part of something. He felt a sudden urge to be a part of it all, to feel accepted and loved. He closed his eyes and wished for a different life, for a chance to start over.
