Chapter 5: Chapter 4: Nightmare

Avvy sits alone on her knees in the center of a burning village holding her head as her tears fall to the ground. She is surrounded by numerous dead bodies. “Why does it hurt so much? Why does everyone leave me? Why does everyone hate me? Where is mother?” Her cries are followed by only the sound of the flames in the village.

“I really wish my mother were here! Where have you gone mother? Don’t tell me you wish to leave me too?” As soon as she asks the question she gets a response. “Don’t worry I am here Avvy! Your mother is right here!”

Avvy opens her teary eyes and realizes that she is still in the familiar inn, and it was all just a nightmare. Light starts to filter in through the wooden windows of the inn. “Are you okay, Avvy?” Root asks as Avvy starts waking up. “You looked like you were having a really bad nightmare.”

“You won’t leave me, will you mom? Will you stay with me forever?” Avvy asks through her teary eyes. “Of course I won't leave you. What brought this on?” Root was a bit confused, but Avvy looked serious. “Promise me you wont leave me!” Avvy suddenly yells out. “I Promise!”

As soon as Root promised, a smile returned to Avvy’s face. She wiped her tears away. As she got up off the bed a knock soon followed as well as a voice. “Hey Avvy, it is Aila. You didn’t eat last night, so I was wondering if you wanted breakfast?” As soon as Aila opens the door she notices Avvy’s eyes which would be obvious to anyone that she had been crying.

Aila quickly runs up to her and embraces her. “What is wrong? Are you hurt?” The only response from Avvy was “I’m okay, my mom is with me!” Aila could only make a wry smile at Avvy’s declaration. “In any case let's get you breakfast!” 

The two walked down the hall into the dining room where they were met with a still tired looking Orton. Root informed Avvy that it was okay for her to eat human food, so the three sat at a table eating breakfast that was prepared by Aila. No one else was currently staying at the inn, so Aila had joined them for breakfast. Silence filled the room as they were eating for a while.

“This might be insensitive of me, but I need to ask. Avvy, where are your parents?” Orton’s sudden question breaks the silence of the room. “My mom is with me! She is amazing!” Avvy answers matter of factly. “You know they can’t see me, and if you keep telling people this they will think you have gone mad.” 

“It must be hard to lose your mother at such a young age. Do you know where your father is?” Avvy just tilts her head at Orton’s question. “My father? I only have my mother.” Orton looks to Aila for a second before stating “Your features look exactly the same as a noble family that went missing in the capital, and you look exactly the same as their daughter who also went missing. Do you remember anything about this?”

“I just came out of the forest. I have been with my mother my whole life!” Avvy answers with a smile. “I see, will you come with me to the capital, Avvy? I am going to deliver supplies there, and it could be fun for you too!” Orton says, returning her smile.

“You can’t possibly be planning to have her go there for that investigation? She is just a child, and we don’t even know if she has a relation to that girl!” Aila voices her protest. “I mean just look at her there is no way there is no relation, and the royal family would be happy to have her back. Even if she doesn’t remember anything. I already told you where I found her. Was that not near the domain where the family was last spotted?”

Avvy just looked at both of them in confusion as she clearly did not know what they were talking about. She knew of no relation to any noble family. The only family she knew was her mother who was with her right now. “I think you should join this Orton fellow in his journey to the capital. Indeed, it would be fun for both of us.”

“If you are okay with it then I am too!” Avvy replied to Root out loud. “Who are you talking to, Avvy?” Aila asked Avvy who seems to frequently whisper to someone or talk to someone who is not there. “My mother said it would be okay for me to go to the capital!”

It took a lot of convincing from Orton to get Aila to let Avvy go to the capital with Orton. She had her conditions for letting Avvy go to the capital. “You have to let me go as well. You must keep her safe at all costs, and absolutely do not get her involved with anything crazy in the capital.”

“Wait, you are going to come to the capital with us? What about your inn? Who will watch over this place if you don’t stay? You know I can handle myself! It is how I am able to travel this much as a merchant afterall. Also why are you going to do this for a little girl you just met?”

“Hey, I am not a little girl! I am Avvy!” Avvy Interjects when Orton finishes his speech. “Of course! Still, Why are you going to do this for Avvy?” Orton looks over to Aila after asking. “This is just something I have to do! It is as much for me as it is for her! I will just have someone from this very village watch over this inn. There can be no argument. Plus if I am not there, who can cuddle with cute little Avvy at night?” 

Orton just looks at her with a face of disbelief for a while before asking, “Don’t tell me you still are blaming yourself for what happened all those years ago? I have told you many times that it was not your fault, and everyone else around the village thinks the same!”

Avvy tilts her head and asks, “What happened?” Orton just looks at her and shakes his head. “It is best if you don’t know, Avvy.” Avvy was about to protest before Aila interrupts, “this has nothing to do with that! Let’s just drop the subject already. I am coming and that is final!”

They decided to drop the topic, and they would be leaving for the capital the next day in Orton’s carriage. After it got awkward they chose to sit in silence. The day passed without anything eventful happening, but with the night came the return of the same nightmare for Avvy.
