Chapter 7: Chapter 5: Newcomer

Avvy wakes up in the inn, but this time she is not crying. Instead she is being embraced by Aila. “Good morning, you were yelling in your sleep about being alone, so I decided to hold onto you. I hope this isn’t uncomfortable for you.” Aila tells Avvy with a warm smile. Avvy returns Aila’s hug and says “I had a nightmare, but I am glad that you and my mom were there.”

“I see you are readily clinging to another person? Indeed, you are a greedy little girl.” Root responds to the scene with a sour tone of voice. Avvy smiles brightly, and whispers. “It is okay, you are my one and only mother. Also, I am not ‘little girl’. I am Avvy.” Avvy pouts at being called a little girl.

“What are you talking about Avvy?” Aila couldn’t really catch onto Avvy’s whispers. “Oh, It’s nothing, hehe.” The two quickly got out of bed. It was still early in the morning, but they were going to leave early so they could get to the capital faster. It would take them two weeks to reach the capital from the Village of Norful. There is one village and a fairly large city in between them and the capital. There would just be plains and fields most of the way.

Avvy and Aila joined Orton for breakfast in the morning. While Aila and Orton made mostly idle conversation. They quickly finished breakfast as light just barely started breaking over the horizon. “We should get going now. Make sure you have everything with you. Also, I have been meaning to ask you Avvy…” 

Avvy looks up at Orton with a sidelong glance. “What is it?” Orton looks down at her and then over to Aila. “I think he is meaning to ask if you have any other change of clothes.” Avvy looks down at herself inspecting her robes, which retained their cleanliness despite the fact she had been walking through the forest and hadn’t washed them. 

“I don’t really need anything else. I got these from my mom, and I don’t want anything else.” Aila looks like she wants to disagree, but she decides they can wait to get her more clothes once they reach the city on the way to the capital. They would reach the City of Indor in a week's time, so they decided not to question further.

As soon as they walked out of the inn; however, there was a girl standing in front of it. She was slightly taller than Avvy herself, but she had hair that went all the way down to her waist. She was wearing black robes, and she had deep crimson eyes. The girl looked over to Avvy and her eyes widened. “Could you actually be? But… no this shouldn’t be possible, and yet there is a longing. Yes, I think this will do for now; after all, this has to do.” The girl said much to the confusion of everyone standing there.

“Who are you? I have never seen you in this village, and I haven’t heard of you. Didn’t your parents teach you to give your name when speaking to someone you saw for the first time?” Aila stood in front of Avvy blocking her. “Calm down Aila, she is just a little girl.” Orton said to Aila before looking at the little girl in front of them. “I am Orton, by the way. Where are your parents?” 

“My parents? Oh, they are dead, but this isn’t important right now. Oh right, my apologies. It has been awhile since I have talked to anyone.” She looked down and put her finger to her chin seemingly in thought. “Right, you can just call me ‘Ness’. Since, I am here. I would like to ask you to take me with you.”

Orton and Aila responded at the same time with “HUH?” Ness started shaking her head while continuing to look down. “Interactions are complicated. I mean to say. I can tell you all are going somewhere, and I want to come with you. Or, is it no good?”

“Wait, wait, wait? I understood you the first time we were just confused. Are you lost?” Orton asks and Aila furiously nods her head. “Lost? Yes I was lost. Where are you going?” Avvy comes out from behind Aila. “We were going to the capital.” For the first time since Ness was standing there a smile arrived on her face. “I see, can I come to the capital with you?”

Avvy starts nodding, but Aila is shaking her head while Orton is seemingly thinking about something. “Yes, I don’t see why not.” Orton says to the little girl in front of them. A dumbfounded look now arrives on Aila’s face. “This is obviously no ordinary little girl. I can tell just from her manner of speaking, and you promised me that no harm would come to Avvy. What are you even thinking about?” Aila says just quiet enough so Ness shouldn’t be able to hear. 

“It is okay. I think she must be a servant of that noble family. She doesn’t seem harmful, and aren’t you too paranoid over a little girl?” Orton whispers back to Aila. “Haa, Fine, but if something bad happens you are going to take responsibility.” Aila sighs and just goes along with Orton for now. “I think this is great!” Avvy yells out as she pumps her fist in the air. 

Out of the three Avvy was the only one that could tell that this girl was abnormal. She instinctively could tell that this girl was not human. She was of some other origin. Unlike Aila though she wasn’t afraid; in fact, she thought this would be exciting. Maybe this newcomer could be her first friend in this world. Maybe this newcomer was just like her.

“It looks like it is decided that you will be coming with us.” Orton says as he shows his kind smile. Ness returns this smile, but the whole time she is just staring at Avvy. Ness instinctively knew that the girl in front of her was not human either. She was not one of those creatures which had slaughtered her kind. The two were similar yet different as Ness herself was a vampire, and Avvy was a fairy. 

Avvy walks up to Ness and extends her hand “I am Avvy, and this is Aila.” she gestures towards Aila. When Ness extends her hand Avvy grabs it and pulls Ness towards her. “My mom is also here, but it’s supposed to be a secret.” She whispers to Ness. 

Ness could already feel another presence within Avvy as soon as she touched her, but strangely this presence was familiar to her. Before Ness could respond though, Orton cut them off. “We need to hurry up and leave before the sun gets too high if we want to make good time.” 

With that the four boarded Orton’s carriage next to the inn. Orton would be driving the carriage as Aila and the two girls sat in the back. Avvy and Ness sat next to each other. The carriage started moving through the village slowly, but eventually arrived at the north gate where a guard stopped them. 

“Where are you going so early in the morning? You're delivering supplies to the capital again, Orton?” The guard asked with a cheery smile on his face. “Kind of, we are just heading there for some business.” Orton says gesturing behind him inside of the carriage. 

“We? Oh it's the lass from before, and another lass? What kind of business are you running?” The guard chuckles. “You know I wouldn’t do that Dimir. Can you stop with the jokes? We are in a little bit of a hurry.” Dimir doesn’t inspect anything. “You can pass. I will always make a special exception for you, and the lass of course.”

With that they began their journey towards the capital from the Village of Norful. They would have to journey for 3 days before reaching the next village over. None of them knew what to expect with the newcomer, or what would happen once they got to the capital. What they did know was that this new girl was not ordinary.
