Chapter 14

Huai Jing took Xu Xingxing to the hospital’s underground parking lot, then they both drove out of the hospital in his car.

“Hello… The deputy director woke up, but his situation is not optimistic, and he is currently under observation in the ICU.” On the way, Xu Xingxing updated Huang Qiansong about Zhong Yujun’s situation.

“Okay, I see, It’s been hard on you today. Go home and rest,” Huang Qiansong sighed and replied.

“Sure…” Before Xu Xingxing could finish answering, the other end hung up the phone.

After this telephone conversation, the two people seated in the car didn’t talk with each other. Huai Jing silently steered the vehicle, while Xu Xingxing’s attention was on the scenery flashing past them through the car window.

It was a smooth ride, but when the car was going to turn into the road leading to Xu Xingxing’s house, she suddenly said, “Stop.”

Huai Jing gave her a sidelong glance before stepping on the brake with the sole of his foot. He then leaned back in his seat to watch as Xu Xingxing unfastened her seatbelt.

“I’ll get some food from the market.” Xu Xingxing held the door frame with her fingers as she looked at Huai Jing and asked, “What do you want to eat?” She had remembered her promise—to prepare supper for him.

After hearing Xu Xingxing’s question, Huai Jing felt warmth spread across his heart, while his eyes subconsciously glanced at Xu Xingxing’s exposed pale collarbone. After seeing that the red marks on her neck had already disappeared, his eyes turned darker. After thinking for a few seconds, he reached out to unfasten his seat belt.

“I don’t have any ideas at the moment, I’ll go with you, maybe I can think about it then.”

“Nope.” Xu Xingxing blurted out in a hurry as she watched him get out of the car.

Huai Jing’s movement stopped, he stared at Xu Xingxing with his deep eyes, and after snorting, asked, “Why?”

Xu Xingxing seemed to return to her senses slightly upon being asked this, and her eyes flashed as she clenched her backpack strap. She then explained softly, “People will misunderstand our relationship.”

“If we are misunderstood, which one of us will suffer?” Huai Jing raised his right eyebrow and smirked at her.

“Huh?” Xu Xingxing was confused by this question, her lips moved slightly, and her voice was so small that it was almost inaudible. “I…”

“Hmm?” The man frowned slightly, as if he hadn’t heard it, and his voice rose slightly.

Xu Xingxing was thinking of how to phrase the words that she was going to say, but in the end, she just said, “Of course, it’s you.”

Huai Jing hadn’t expected such a reply.

After saying that, Xu Xingxing looked up at Huai Jing. The man closed the car door with one hand, raised the corner of his lips at her, and said indifferently, “I’m not afraid of losing money, let’s go.”

Xu Xingxing: “…”

Due to Huai Jing’s arrival, the vegetable seller who was usually noisy, dealt with Xu Xingxing more appropriately than the other times. Xu Xingxing stood in front of the stall, picking up vegetables, and Huai Jing stood beside her, looking down at the vegetables, asking their price politely.

‘He really has all the qualities to attract the opposite sex.’ Xu Xingxing thought while observing the vegetable seller.

He clearly stood out from among the throng; a fair-skinned, tall, well-dressed man, with a deep and pleasant voice and a grin on his lips when conversing; a really polite and friendly guy. To outsiders, he seemed to show another personality, one as gentle as jade, with an outstanding appearance, and people who were attracted by this gentleness of his would not imagine that he displayed a totally different attitude in bed.

“Xingxing?” Huai Jing looked down at her and reached out to give her a hand.

Xu Xingxing, who was in a daze, was pulled by Huai Jing to his side, so she looked at him with puzzled eyes. The familiar smell of the man made Xu Xingxing’s face turn slightly warm. After regaining her senses, she took the tomato in Huai Jing’s hand.

Seeing the interaction between two people, the vegetable seller gave them an ambiguous smile, and Xu Xingxing’s face turned red. After buying the vegetables, Xu Xingxing pulled Huai Jing out of the vegetable market.

When they came to the car, Huai Jing looked at Xu Xingxing teasingly, took the bags from her, placed them in the back seat, and sat down in the driving seat while signalling her to get in the car.

“Hey, I didn’t know buying vegetables could be this interesting,” Huai Jing said after starting the car.

“It’s not interesting to buy it often,” Xu Xingxing pursed her lips and replied lightly.

“Yes.” Huai Jing also agreed, and then added, “So let’s go out to buy these occasionally.”

Xu Xingxing was left speechless.

After they arrived at Xu Xingxing’s house, she pulled out her key and opened the door. Inside the house, Mimi seemed to have heard their footsteps, thus why it was already squatting by the door and meowing. On receiving such a welcome back home, Xu Xingxing’s heart softened and the loneliness she felt in the hospital disappeared a little. She opened the door and squatted down, and the white ball rushed into her arms. Although Mimi was a cat, it was as clingy as a dog.

Holding Mimi in her arms, Xu Xingxing reached out and touched its head. The fur on the top of its head was fluffy and comfortable. She rubbed its cheek, glanced at the food bowl on the floor, and asked Mimi, “Why haven’t you finished eating?”

Mimi, who was acting coquettishly, suddenly looked behind its owner and saw Huai Jing, who was looking at their interaction, and then, as if to provoke this onlooker, rubbed its head on Xu Xingxing’s neck.

After seeing this display of deep love between owner and pet, Huai Jing narrowed his eyes and chuckled out loud, reminding Xu Xingxing of his existence.

She suddenly recalled that there was another person trailing behind, and quickly moved aside to make room for Huai Jing. She set Mimi down before going to the refrigerator, opening it, and removing a box of canned goods.

Mimi was not hard to raise, but it was an aristocratic cat after all, so Xu Xingxing had prepared a lot of canned salmon for it. Mimi meowed as she approached the opened can placed on the floor, rubbed against Xu Xingxing’s feet to show its love, and gave it a quick sniff with the tip of its nose before licking it.

“Hmmm…I have raised it for half a year, and it has never loved me like this.” Huai Jing’s annoying voice echoed through the silent room.

Xu Xingxing put her hand on Mimi’s head, on the soft fur that made her feel better. Without raising her head, she whispered something, “If you do not love it, will it love you back?”

Huai Jing didn’t hear Xu Xingxing’s words clearly.

So he kept looking at her—Xu Xingxing squatting beside Mimi, her cheeks a little red due to the uptake in temperature inside the house.

“What did you just say?” Huai Jing asked.

Xu Xingxing didn’t raise her head, but she stopped patting Mimi’s head. “It’s nothing, I’ll go cook now.”

Huai Jing: “…”

He watched the woman’s back as she disappeared into the kitchen, then looked down at Mimi who was eating canned food, before squatting down.

Liu Qianxiu, one of the so-called “Four Young Masters of Xiacheng,” had given him this cat. One day, when Huai Jing had gone to the hospital to meet his friend, Liu Qianxiu, he had given him Mimi as a present. Actually, the real reason for giving the cat to Huai Jing was that Liu Qianxiu, who was a busy doctor, had no time to look after the cat. As a doctor, Liu Qianxiu had also made sure to properly neuter the cat.

“Mimi…” Huai Jing said its name lightly, then laughed. He remembered that the cat should be a male cat.

Huai Jing’s eyes gradually darkened, and following Xu Xingxing’s example, he put his hand on Mimi’s head. Mimi, who was eating canned food, quickly pulled its head back. It bared its teeth at Huai Jing, “Meow!”

“Yo~” Huai Jing twitched his eyes, startled, and asked, “Don’t you like me?”

Mimi still didn’t let Huai Jing touch it..

He soon grew bored with it. Compared to this kind of strong temper from a cat, he preferred Xu Xingxing’s softness. He raised his lips and went to the kitchen.

After the two of them finished their dinner, Xu Xingxing went to clean the dishes, hoping Huai Jing would go home after this, however, he had different plans. He went to the kitchen, hugged Xu Xingxing, and kissed her. She was gradually seduced by him.

The air around them heated up as the man wrapped his arms around the woman’s waist, his soft lips fell on her neck, and he bit it lightly.

Xu Xingxing frowned and let out a soft “hiss”.

A low chuckle broke out, and then Xu Xingxing was already being carried by Huai Jing horizontally.

Just as Huai Jing had taken two steps forward in this posture, he suddenly felt a small weight hanging on his legs. He frowned and glanced down, only to see that Mimi had grabbed hold of his pants with one of its paws, while baring its teeth at him.

Xu Xingxing looked down and saw this scene too.

“It used to be my cat.” Huai Jing’s eyes darkened, and he sneered, “It’s only been a few days, and it has already betrayed me.”

The man’s voice was low, with a little displeasure interspersed in it. There was coldness in his eyes, and his expression became a little perverse.

Xu Xingxing grabbed Huai Jing’s shirt with both hands, scared of him hurting Mimi right now. The man’s gaze shifted to her on this exertion of force.

He looked down at her, and with a smile in his eyes, said, “It’s okay, I’ll kiss you instead.”
