The sky is clear; the stars are twinkling. It was a strange sight to see in the middle of the city, even from the rooftop of a multi-storied apartment building. Only half the lights in the city were working, and trying to fix the problem meant traversing outdoors, an increasingly dangerous proposition.

The first two floors in Rein’s apartment building had been spared, but going down to the first floor was precarious. It was easier to seal off the entrances leading to the second floor, then it was all the entrances and windows on the first. The city was falling apart, and Rein had no idea how much longer he could stay here, despite the relative safety of the building.

Rein sighed. There was a cold breeze circling the night sky, accompanying the increasing cold nights, as autumn was right around the corner. Standing on the rooftop, leaning against the side railing was not helping, but he didn’t really care.

Even those horrible undead groaning sounds that had replaced the normal hustle and bustle of city life wasn’t a deterrent.

“Rein.”

Rein turned to see Eero walking up to him. Here was the man who had caused Rein to retreat to the rooftop to begin with. He was tall with black hair, and a bandage covered arm hanging limply at his side.

“How’s the arm?” Rein inquired.

“It hasn’t gotten worse, though I suspect you really wanted to know if I feel a ravenous hunger for human flesh yet.”

He turned away from Eero.

“Maybe I just don’t want to see my brother turning into one of them,” Rein said, “and maybe I don’t want to be part of the meeting where I tell everyone why I need to be the one to put the bullet through your head, instead of letting someone else do it.”

Eero walked up to Rein, and leaned against the railing.

“There’s nothing they can do, short of amputation,” Eero replied. “Those things almost gnawed my arm off. But you know, I’m also infected, so what would be the point in treating me? We both know it’s a waiting game.”

Rein shook his head.

“Maybe, or maybe not. There’s still a chance you’ll be immune to the virus. There’s still a chance you won’t become one if the living dead.”

Eero snorted,

“A zombie, you mean. You can say the word.”

A particularly chill breeze washed through them.

“Let’s go back inside,” Rein said.

“If you feel so strongly about keeping me alive, then you know what we have to do, otherwise there is no hope left,” Eero stated. “‘For the good of the community, for the good of us all.’ That’s what we say, isn’t it?“

“Yeah, I know. I’m the one who helped come up with it.”

Eero placed a hand on Rein’s shoulder.

“If we choose to leave, and I begin to turn, then you will kill me and everything would have been for nothing,” Eero said. “You have it good here. Is taking this chance really worth it?”

“That’s why I’m up here, to affirm my decision.”

“And?”

Rein covered Eero’s hand with his own.

“We will leave tomorrow; I know of a few places we can go,” Rein said. “No one will stop us from leaving.”

“And if I turn?” Eero asked.

Rein shrugged.

“Then we turn together because not even death will keep us apart.”
