“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”

- Benjamin Franklin, United States of America, 1733

Preparation is key for any isekai, for both yourself and your environment. How you prepare can significantly determine how your next journey is going to play out, whether you think so or not.

Preparing for the next world comes down to two major hemispheres - Yourself and Others (YO). The former refers to how you may develop yourself, and the latter how you may develop your interactions with others.

Yourself - how you develop yourself beforehand.

The repertoire you build up before undergoing transportation to another world can determine life and death, quite literally in some cases, if not give you an edge over the next world’s inhabitants. There have been documented cases of Earth knowledge being incredibly useful in other worlds - guns, medicine, and paper-making are three well-documented niches that have been quite useful. However, there are some fields which have proven themselves to be useful in most new worlds, regardless of whether they are fantasy, sci-fi, or alternate realities.

  • Science

The first tool of the isekai quartet, learning almost anything within the field of science will come out beneficial, even if some fantasy worlds may attempt to blatantly break the natural laws. Chemistry is always a good choice, and so is physics - the former because laws of nature exist in almost every new world, the latter because most worlds still obey the laws of physics to a certain extent.

Knowing your science will give you a leg up in most fantasy worlds - as they tend to be set in feudal periods, and thus science knowledge will give you the leg up in your studies. Physics in particular is useful in fights, such as tracking the arc of a fireball, or predicting how your opponent’s spear will swing.

  • Mathematics

The second tool of the isekai quartet, mathematics up to and including trigonometry is incredibly useful. Mathematics is a second good all-rounder, a useful tool in any proper isekai-er’s toolbox. Geometry tends to be key in more structured magical worlds and is vital in sci-fi worlds. Algebra becomes vitally important in almost any fantasy world since bookkeeping and calculations are likely going to be part of your everyday life.

Knowing your mathematics will give you a leg up in quite a few fantasy worlds, particularly in the long run. In structured magical worlds and science-fiction-like worlds, geometry and trigonometry become vital for constructing magical circles, calculating blaster beam arcs, and even estimating how far a water bomb will fly before impact. In less structured worlds, algebra tends to become revolutionary, as many feudal societies neglect their mathematics, and thus any Earth-mathematics allows you an incredible boost in calculations and logistical situations. This can even extend as far as architecture, assuming you’ve taken mathematics this far.

  • History

Ah yes, the most useless subject in school - or is it, as the third tool of the isekai quartet? If you’re still in school, start soaking up the knowledge about world history as quickly as possible - many isekais occur to teenagers around the age of 12-16. If you’re not in school, the search engine bar should be your best friend.

Knowing your history will give you a leg up in most new worlds unless the world is so fantastical it breaks most senses of logic and common sense. Elsewise, history tends to repeat itself, and thus history will keep you on your toes and anticipating the next possible situations. As my seventh-grade world history teacher used to say, “I can predict the future because I have seen the past.” Knowledge is power, and if you know of proper hygiene (or lack of thereof) and its effects on disease spreading, you can properly devise situations that can counter it - but you would have to know your history of John Snow - the father of epidemiology - first, and his exploits at tackling the cholera epidemic in London of 1854. If you know of a possible money-making situation, like a newly discovered mine, how do you handle it? Like any good mining company - monopolize it, as the De Beers company would tell you.

  • Language comprehension

The final tool of the isekai quartet - language comprehension. Learn how to differentiate between various language patterns and how to adapt to new languages quickly - you’re going to need it. Knowledge is power, but only if you can understand what language it’s been written or spoken in the first place.

Knowing your language comprehension patterns will give you a leg up in every new world, regardless of the setting. Being able to understand the world around you as quickly as possible means you can start generating plans and preparing for the outside world as efficiently as possible, minimizing the often-wasted time of isekai childhoods in favor of long-term payoffs. The faster you learn a new language, the faster you can develop your plans, and the faster you can grow in your new world.

Of course, specializing in one field or two can have massive payoffs - health-related and warfare-related knowledge have proven to be incredibly useful in many new worlds, such as medicine and guns. If you have the time to do so, after developing the above skills to adequate levels, go for it! Martial arts are useful in many cases, since other worlds may not be as peaceful as ours, but they are not strictly necessary for a jumpstart, but are highly recommended anyways.

Others - how others interact with you

This is incredibly important, especially if you’ve got family and friends who you hold dear.

If you don’t have people you hold dear, obtain a will as quickly as possible and install your auto-deleters. If you perish, at least your funds and belongings will go to an organization you wished you could support, perhaps your organs could be used to save a few lives, and your R-18 material folder is deleted if not opened once every forty-eight hours. Being satisfied that you left the old world with minimal regrets, even if you are the recluse otaku type, is key to the next few steps in the new world, as you will need a clear state of mind.

If you do have people you hold dear, prepare the will - and possibly an uplifting note or ten. You never know when you are going to get transported, but it is best to stay prepared. Enjoy your life with others as much as you can - you only have so much time left.  Go buy those roses for your mother, go play those video games with your younger sibling ten years your lesser, go read those picture books to your younger cousin an entire generation after you. When you die, you want those you hold dear to remember you for what good you did - the charities you’ve donated to, the games you’ve played, the memories you’ve made.

Ultimately, what you aim for here is closure, as painless as possible. When you get transported, it is often a one-way street, and you may never come back to fulfill the regrets you or those around you wish which could have been fixed before your passing on.
