"I understand you're upset," I told Cass, "but you have no idea where Eris went, do you?"
Cass's expression was dour, looking almost like I was scolding her. Unlike Julia, who liked being scolded, I didn't enjoy the feeling. I sat down next to Cass, gently putting my hand on her thigh to reassure her. "I'm worried... about who... attacked Syr," she explained. "It wasn't... a member of the... Nyx familia."
"I get that. I'm worried about that too." Mainly because there was no such attack in canon; assuming that the machinery of the universe was clockwork was probably too much to ask for, but Syr clearly hadn't been targeted for assassination attempts by high level adventurers in the past, otherwise, she would be dead by canon start. Or at least, not pretending at being a normal girl, rather than a member of the Freya familia. By the look on Cass's face, she had different reasons to be concerned. "But she's with the Freya familia to recuperate. She's safe, for now."
Cass nodded quietly.
She wasn't entirely satisfied, but... "Erza is investigating it. We need to level up ourselves, to stay safe, and to be able to solve problems like this in the future."
"Alright..." she said, agreeing with my argument, if only under duress. I kissed her on the cheek.
"Don't worry. Erza can handle it."
* * *
Erza approached the man. She was quite certain he was a member of the Nyx familia, as she grabbed the lapels of his shirt. They wore markings on their clothes to identify themselves, and he had the same distinctive armband. "Where is the Nyx familia captain?!" She demanded of the man.
"I- Uh-" he stammered, and she slammed her forehead directly into his own, rendering him unconscious. She rushed forward to the next member of the Nyx familia, repeating the process; and again; and again. It would bear fruit soon enough.
* * *
Eris had already evacuated Nyx from her previous home into a safehouse she'd prepared, giving the goddess the appropriate technically-true excuses and making it so that she was the only one who knew where Nyx was.
She still didn't know who had actually hit Syr - no members of her familia had come forward about it, and she was becoming less and less certain, as she thought about it, that it had been a member of the Nyx familia. She didn't know who else could have a grudge against the girl. Unfortunately, it appeared that one of Syr's admirers had decided to come after them, some tall busty human woman with fiery red hair and an incredibly brutal interrogation style. She was lucky that she hadn't given her men any info on where she was staying, because otherwise she would have been caught and killed by now.
The situation was bad. Dire, even. She needed to find a way to recover from this incident. There was always a way out, she'd learned that long before she'd even been part of the Nyx familia. You just had to think and act.
Abandon Nyx entirely? She'd maintain access to her falna, and Level Two was plenty strong enough outside Orario. It was possible that whichever familia the redhead was from would be watching the exits, but that might be something she could compensate for. Dye her hair a different color, do herself up girlishly, and she could pass for a human child instead of a pallum. They'd only be able to recognize her if "Spectre" or "Batgirl" were the ones to see her, people who had actually seen her face rather than relying on second-hand sources... once she was out of Orario, her status would be locked, but that was a small price to pay for freedom.
Could she bring Nyx with her? The goddess was incredibly valuable, but coming up with some contrived explanation to get her out of Orario... she'd have a harder time leveling in another city, too. She bit her lip. No, she wasn't necessary. Level Two was strong enough as long as she kept her head down. "Stay here, goddess. I worry something bad may happen if you leave before I can make myself safe." Nyx just nodded, clearly concerned for her own well-being, hiding beneath her blanket. By the time that she realized that Eris wasn't coming back, the pallum knew she would be long gone.
* * *
"Fuck, fuck, fuck!" Eris scowled, the secret compartment where she'd put the money that she'd been saving up having been robbed. All she had now was pocket change and her armor and clothes. She didn't even have her damn sword for resale, and unlike a sword, armor was fitted to the person - there wasn't going to be much value in a pallum-sized set. "Okay. I'll need to dial back my expectations. I can go to the Dungeon, get some quick cash, sell it off at the Guild, and run for it with whatever I've got. One last day in the Dungeon..." She sighed, shaking her head. The whole familia could die for all she cared. She knew it was one of her familia members who had stolen from her, and much as she'd like to find them and cut their throats, they were probably long gone, if they had the tiniest bit of sense.
Maybe one day, they'd stumble on one another. If the bastard wasn't smart enough to leave Orario, then she could at least rest easy knowing he'd soon be going to prison.
* * *
Eris had scarcely believed what she'd seen, when she had first spotted the group in the distance. She would recognize those damned gauntlets anywhere - that girl, the Eastern girl with the scars, was Batgirl. More importantly, she was asleep. They were on the fifth floor, and she was sleeping? She must have been fucking stupid. She was guarded by another Eastern girl - a supporter - and a man who appeared to carry a longsword and play with throwing knives. The Spectre wasn't present, at least not as far as she'd noticed in her minute or so of carefully watching.
As far as chances for revenge got... this was as good as it came. Her enemy was literally asleep. All she had to do was sneak up on them and cut the bitch's throat. They were in the Dungeon, a lawless place where whatever she did was fine and bore no consequences. She wished she had some of her men with her, but they were currently serving as all-natural distractions for that high level redhead that had been so offended by Syr's injury.
She slunk up slowly, carefully, keeping her senses sharp. The Dungeon was dark, and she'd already put out her own light, so there was the cloying darkness that completely engulfed her as she stepped gingerly forward. It was like a physical force, a great miasma that cloaked her in a cold darkness as each silent footstep got her a few inches closer to her target. She held her breath, even, her eyes flicking across the trio, the man idly walking in circles, the conscious girl having flopped down on the ground to sit, legs kicking; and Batgirl, still sleeping, her legs and arms crossed, her back resting against the wall.
She held her knife close, slipping it under her shirt, to avoid the risk of any glint of light bouncing off it as she reached the edge of their lamp's illumination. The man's idle back and forth movements were more energetic than they were a proper patrol. She peeled her way out of her shoes, abandoning them for just a moment so that her soft feet could avoid the clopping that her wooden shoes would make if she moved at any speed.
Then she rushed forward. Perhaps predictably, Batgirl's eyes flashed open, and she brought her gauntlets up - slowly, far too slowly. She didn't manage to get a hold of her blade, only just snapping around her wrist, but of them, Eris was the stronger, and she grinned wickedly as she forced the knife forward, the tip piercing her skin as she kept pushing.
"Eris," came a male voice from her side, and Eris felt at peace, her grip on the blade becoming a bit slack, her breath softening. What was she doing? She had lost her train of thought entirely-
* * *
The roar of Julia's anti-materiel rifle was deafening, though sadly for my memories the flash of light wasn't quite so blinding, instead momentarily illuminating the scene sharply. Eris's skull exploded into red paste, splashing across a section of the Dungeon's floor and walls, and her body limply fell down atop Cass, who was very, very obviously unhappy about having a corpse on top of her. She was shuffling desperately out from under it, tears forming in her eyes, and I quickly came up to her, gently wrapping her in my arms, doing my best to soothe her as she freaked out.
Julia wisely decided that now was not a good time to be her usual annoying self, and just stayed silent as I held Cass tight against me. "I'm sorry." The words were little more than a breath, but I knew that Cass understood them anyway. "She was going to kill you." Technically, it was possible that Cass might have managed to overpower her, with the momentary distraction from Favorable Inflection Procedure - but I wasn't going to take that chance, and I didn't blame Julia for taking her shot. "It's going to be okay." I quietly tilted her head away from the grisly scene. "Cass," I said, using that same Skill/Charm again. It didn't consume any meaningful amount of Essence, so I could use it easily over and over in situations like this.
The effect was pretty much instant. It was like the shuddering, sobbing girl in my arms had been hit with a tranq dart, for the way her body stilled. There were a few seconds of silence as she tried to recall quite what was going on. "Sorry, Cass," I said. I didn't like using the ability on her like that, but - Eris was dead. There was no bringing her back now. Her freaking out in the Dungeon wasn't a good idea. I gently rose, carrying Cass with me. "Let's go home."
"I'll make sure Noriko gets home okay, goshujinsama," Julia said, clearly urging me on. I started to step onto the air, planning to simply run past and over any goblins, Cass still held in my arms as I made my way forward.
I heard the sound of a backhanded smack to the face. "That is joousama to you, Bitch," Noriko said.
"Sorry, joousama," Julia agreed, her voice growing quieter the further we got, but still audible to my falna-enhanced senses.
"Much better," Noriko said. "You will carry me piggy back," she proclaimed. I could hear as Noriko clambered atop Julia, and then as Julia started to make her way through the halls - a couple resounding explosive 'bangs' of her firearms were confirmation that she was still alive, as the group of us made our way back to the surface.
* * *
Cass felt... bad. Drake had carried her out of the Dungeon; Noriko and the nameless girl had followed after her.
The nameless girl had killed Eris.
The nameless girl had killed Eris.
She had watched it happen. Seen the moment a person... emptied out. The moment when Eris stopped existing in this world any longer, and was replaced by... nothing.
Drake held her in his arms, which was comforting, but it didn't change that... reality. Eris had died because of her. If she had been stronger, able to disable her safely, the nameless girl wouldn't have killed her. She knew that. Drake knew that. The nameless girl knew that.
Her eyes started stinging again, her throat bobbing. She... didn't have anything she could do. "There's an a̷f͞҉̶ţe̡ŗ̵l͢i͏̷f̛e̶, here," Drake said. She turned to look at him, but it didn't help at all.
"What's... an afterlife?" She asked.
"If people die in this world, they go up to Heaven, where their souls get judged by the gods and they do... whatever they decide to do." He obviously didn't think this 'afterlife' was a perfect place, but that Eris still 'existed' in Heaven.
It didn't matter. Eris... would never be what she was, ever again. That was what death was. "That... doesn't help..." Cass said, and he just nodded, holding her a little tighter.
"I'm sorry," he said, again. There was real guilt in his voice, as he said it.
"It's not... your fault."
"I brought you here. And Julia too." Julia? The nameless girl, he meant. "It probably won't be the last time something bad happens to you, because you're here."
She could feel the guilt emanating from his body. "It isn't... your fault..." she said again.
"It isn't yours, either," he said.
"I wasn't... strong enough."
"Cass. You are gaining stats faster than any other member of our group. Faster than anyone, ever. There is no way you could have been any stronger than you were."
Cass thought about it. Could she have been stronger? She trained. She fought in the Dungeon. On the streets of Daedalus. Maybe... he was right... no, there were things she could have done differently. She could have been smarter. She wasn't very smart. She needed to do something... she couldn't just sit here. "I need... to do something," she said.
He gently released her, standing up as she did. "What do you want to do?" He asked.
Help someone. Put the image of Eris's head exploding out of her mind. Train, so that it wouldn't happen again. "Get stronger."
"When was the last time you got your falna updated?" He asked.
"A week or so..." She didn't mind that Loki liked to look at her body... lots of people liked to look at other people's bodies. But she didn't like the way that Loki wanted to... grope her, with or without, her agreement...
"Let's go get your falna updated. I'll make sure Loki doesn't do anything."
Loki couldn't do anything to her that she didn't let her, but Cass nodded along anyway.
* * *
"Level Two already?!" Loki shouted the words in shock, staring at the falna in front of her. If she had been a slot machine, her eyes would be turning into dollar signs right about then. She knew that when she picked up this little weirdo harem, she was going to get something wonderful out of it! In less than three months, Cassandra Cain had stomped all over Ais Wallenstein, the previous record-holder, who had done it in a little under eleven months.
"Please don't yell," Drake said. "Cass isn't in a good mood."
"She should get in a good mood!" Loki grabbed Cass's shoulders and started bouncing her up and down as much as she could, to emphasize the point. "You are now the fastest person to ever reach Level Two in the entire history of the world! And I know you're a little training monkey, eh? Guess that crimefighting really is good for you," Loki said. Her thoughts were already on the possibility of having her familia take up some part of the job of fighting crime from the Ganesha familia. Since the destruction of the Astraea familia, they'd been handling it alone, but if it was free excelia... Ganesha, that bastard! How could he keep this from her? He was cannier than he acted, that was the only explanation.
"I'm... I don't..." Cass stammered. "I didn't..."
Drake sure wasn't kidding about the bad mood - the girl was starting to cry. Sheesh! Loki knew what would help with a crying girl: a good groping-
And she was on her belly on the ground, Cass holding her from behind, one hand on her wrist, the other on the back of the head. "I'm being manhandled by a Level Two! Come on, you're too strong, this is just bullying now."
Cass's expression was still dark. Even Drake's was. "You..." Cass said, suddenly looking up at him. "What are you... thinking?"
"You level up from doing something exceptional," Drake said. He sounded really cold about it. Was there something bad about what she'd fought? Wait, was it something that was going to bounce back on them?
"What did you do?" Loki asked.
"I didn't..." Cass said, and actually let her go before getting a sincere promise to stop groping her. "I didn't..." she said, putting her head in her hands as she sat down on the bed.
Fine. Fine! Let it never be said that Loki was a completely incorrigible lech! She wouldn't grope the crying girl if she was that upset. There were limits to brazenness, something that old Zeus had never understood. She wouldn't confirm it one way or the other, but it just may have played a part in his downfall. Both Loki and Freya liked their harems unmolested, after all.
"You didn't, Cass," Drake reassured her, pulling her into a hug. She was still topless for the falna update, which meant he was getting those delicious breasts of hers mushed into his chest. "Update my falna, too," he said, looking at Loki, who had pulled herself up off the ground.
She supposed that he did have D-rank stats, and thus could have leveled up in the same incident, but... "I don't know, I don't appreciate getting beat up just because Cass is in a bad mood." Plus, she didn't want some random dude to tie with Cass.
Drake glowered at her. It was impressive! He had a good glower! But she wasn't afraid of him, not even a little. "You got put in a hold because you attempted to grope a traumatized girl."
He said it like it was a bad thing. Why, huh? Just because it was? She was a goddess, she could be forgiven for the occasional little thing like groping her familia members. They owed it to her! Just because they all tried their best not to let her grope them...! Now she was the one who was going to cry!
No, she was forced to conclude after a few seconds of trying, it looked like she wasn't. She just pouted. "I don't like doing falna updates back-to-back. Plus, she has a couple Development Ability options. Let's see-" she said, getting behind Cass to look at her back. "We've got Hunter and Fist Strike. Hunter makes you better at fighting monsters you've fought before, Fist Strike makes you good at punching things."
"Fist Strike," Cass said, without even the tiniest hesitation.
"What, you don't even want to think about it?" Loki asked.
"Does... Hunter help... with things that aren't... monsters?"
"Uhh, no..."
"Fist Strike," Cass repeated. "I don't care... about fighting monsters." True.
"Fine, fine." If she didn't care, she didn't care; Loki couldn't convince this stubborn girl to let her grope her, much less choose her Development Abilities for her. "Sit back down on the bed," Loki said, getting behind the girl, her fingers trailing across Cass's bare skin as she worked. She enjoyed the interesting little scars the girl had. They gave character, in their own way. After a few seconds, the work was done. She pretended to keep working for a second before getting caught.
"You're... done."
Loki clapped her hands sharply. "Great! Then you can both leave, since I'm not allowed to grope Cass, for some reason." Drake stared at her quietly, while Cass wriggled her way into a top, facing away from her the whole time, as if intentionally trying to deny her a good look at her breasts.
"I need my falna updated."
"We can do it tomorrow. You're not going to the Dungeon today, are you? Not with Cass like this."
Drake stared at her. "I need it now. Julia does too." Xulia, eh? Loki just shrugged noncommittally. He may need it, but she didn't need it, and she'd rather that her latest record holder didn't wind up tied with a man. There was a moment of silence, then he stepped back, looking at the ceiling, taking in a few breaths to calm himself. Cass reached out and clasped his hand in hers. That bastard! How come Cass held his hand?! Just because he was supportive and kind, while Loki gave her a divine blessing and groped her? No matter how you think about it, obviously being supportive and kind couldn't compare to a divine blessing. "Fine," he sighed, looking over at Loki. "If you update both our falnas, you can grope Julia all you want. For the day." True.
"Why didn't you just say that from the beginning?" She asked, with a bright smile on her face. She slapped her thigh. "Come on over. Let's get you that Level Up you so desperately want." He clambered up into her lap, and she pricked her thumb.
* * *
It was true that all three of them - Xulia, Drake, and Cass - had leveled up. Drake had only had the option for Hunter as a Development Ability, so naturally he'd gotten that; he had also just picked up a Skill called "You and Yours Stance," which he claimed made him "unimaginably beautiful." That read as a true statement, but she wasn't sure she believed it anyway. Especially because he refused to show it off. There was no possible reason to avoid using that Skill on her. After all, if he really would be unimaginably beautiful, he just might get to bang a goddess.
She still had her hands attached firmly to Xulia's nice tits, which were gorgeous and completely naked. The girl was just sort of sitting there. Loki idly brushed her fingertips against her soft nipples, and she didn't respond at all.
This was a conspiracy right from the start, wasn't it? She squinted sharply at Xulia. Drake had chosen to look away from the scene, instead gently comforting Cass. "See? Both of us leveled up too. It's not - it doesn't mean what happened was your fault, Cass."
"What did happen, anyway?"

"I blew up a Level Two's face!" Xulia exclaimed excitedly, her nipples actually hardening at exactly that moment. Whoa nelly. Was this the proverbial crazy you weren't supposed to stick your dick in? Fortunately, she didn't have one of those, but it still seemed increasingly dangerous, having her tits in her hands. What was life without a little danger, though? "She was about to kill Cass, but Cass is really sensitive so she's upset about it. If you want to bash my skull in, Cass, you can. That's what Wounds Mean Nothing is for!" She clonked herself on the side of the head, and Cass didn't even look her way.
"Anyway, so, show me You and Yours Stance," Loki said.
"It makes people do whatever I say," Drake said. True. "I don't want to use it except for with Bitch-" he'd reverted to calling her that, now that she was in the same room, "-and my other wives, if they want to do it."
"Wow. Kinky. So it's like Charm magic? Pretty good for a Level Two. Only a few goddesses have that power."
"It's not like Charm. It's just... pervasive."
"Pervasive?"
"If I ask for anything, tell people to do anything, they just- do it. Even something like 'Don't mention it.' Anyway, I only figured it out to use for sex."
"Goshujinsama is so kind to me," Xulia said with an exaggerated cadence. "Ah! Loki, if you really want to see the Skill, you could open your legs and ask him to fuck you! He'd totally do it, too!" Her eyes practically sparkled as she spoke.
"If the Skill's that amazing, I'd do that anyway," Loki said.
"Goshujinsama thinks it would be rape to use magic to make you have sex with him, but if you were going to have sex with him anyway..." Xulia continued, eyes sparkling.
"This really isn't a good time to talk about sex, Bitch. Cass- I'm going to take Cass back to our room and cuddle. Loki is only allowed to play with your tits - if she goes beyond that, well, you can take care of yourself."
"Of course, goshujinsama. All three of my holes are just for you and joousama."
He took Cass out of the room, leaving Loki alone in the room with a topless Xulia, with free reign to grope the girl's tits, something she had wanted pretty much since the girl had joined her familia... dammit! It was true what they said! You want what you don't got! She wanted to see that stupid sexy Skill of his. Plus, Xulia was pretty much a dead fish in terms of groping potential. "You really think that?" Loki prompted.
"Think what, Loki?"
Hey, hey, how come these perfectly ordinary, mortal adventurers got the titles of goshujinsama and joousama, but Loki didn't? "Call me joousama."
"No."
Loki had not expected that parry, to be honest. "Why not?"
"Because Noriko is joousama," Xulia explained, like that helped at all. Bah!
"Anyway, you think that he would actually turn into a super hot dude and then have sex with me?"
"Yes, definitely." True.
"You're sure?"
"I'm sure."
Obviously, obviously, Loki could have sex on her own. She was a goddess! Some members of her familia respected her! But, all the gods had come down to the lower world to explore new things, and fucking the most handsome man in the entire world did seem like it would be good. Especially rubbing Freya's face in it. "I want to try it out," she said, pushing Xulia out of her lap. "If he's not actually that hot, then I'm turning back."
"Ah... not today, Loki. Goshujinsama's favorite is Cass, and she needs lots of comforting because I killed someone right in front of her."
Loki gave her a level stare. This girl knew that another girl was her beloved's favorite and didn't even care? No... she maybe even was turned on by it?! She guessed that helped explain how he could have four wives without them constantly fighting. Even Freya couldn't get her familia to stop beating the ever-loving shit out of each other while competing for sex. She let out a long sigh. "Fine, fine. When he's in a better mood, you come to me. I can be seductive, when I need to be. I want to try out this thing."
"Of course, Loki," she said, with a bright energy and warm smile that suggested she was really excited. Loki just grabbed one tit in either hand and got back to molesting them.
"If he's not the hottest dude ever, then I reserve the right to change my mind!" Xulia just nodded placidly, seemingly not caring at all about her groping her tits. "Oh, which Development Ability did you want, anyway? Hunter or Gunpowder Girl?"
"Gunpowder Girl," Xulia said without hesitation. Made sense. It was a unique Development Ability, she'd never seen it before. "Loki, are you going to pick it?"
"Not now. I've only got a limited time to grope these puppies of yours," Loki said. "I'm going to make the most of it."
"Hmm. I could ask goshujinsama about getting you more chances to grope my breasts, if you make a nickname suggestion at Denatus."

Erza had dragged Cassandra with her out to the Hostess of Fertility. Her good friend, and co-wife, had become depressed from what had happened in the Dungeon. It was always a tragedy when someone died, even if you did not know them well. But there was one thing that never failed to put Erza in a good mood: the maids at the Hostess of Fertility!
Syr even had made a full recovery, by the looks of it, coming out to greet the two of them. She looked a little unsure, as she glanced over at Cassandra, her lower lip wobbling for a moment. "Is something wrong?"
When Cassandra just quietly stared at the table, perhaps willing herself to be unhappy, Erza spoke. "Cassandra had a tough time in the Dungeon today. Someone died."
Syr's eyes widened at that. "Oh no! I'm so sorry. Was it the girl without a name?" Cassandra flicked her eyes to Syr, a trace of annoyance at the question on her face - then put herself right back into moping mode. "Oh. I know you liked her-"
"It was not one of our co-wives," Erza interrupted, making Syr startle a little. "It was the Captain of the Nyx familia." Syr's brow furrowed at that, perhaps in confusion. "Cassandra does not have an easy time, dealing with death; and it is the sort of bad time where one cannot simply will oneself past it."
"You feel guilty? Don't!" Syr said leaning in to poke Cassandra in the cheek, making her eyes flick over to meet Syr's. "You didn't do anything wrong. You fought crime. You protected people. And, yes, maybe this ordinary waitress got plonked in the head," she said with an exaggerated flourish, going over the top to hide her status as an Adventurer, "but did you throw that rock? And I know you didn't kill Eris. It was the girl without a name, wasn't it?" She asked, seriously.
"...she did it to protect me."
Syr's expression briefly shifted, as she clearly tried to come up with something to say. She eventually decided to change the subject. "I know the real reason you're so guilty." Cassandra glanced up at her, perhaps catching the truth in her words. "It's because..." she glanced around, conspiratorially. "You leveled up, right?" Cass blinked. "You have this 'glow' around you, adventurers who just leveled up all do. You know - the next Denatus is coming up soon, there was a bit of weirdness in the schedule because of what happened to Soma. I could put in a word for you with Freya, maybe get you an alias you'd like? What sort of alias would you like? Think of it like a gift, for my knight in shining armor," she added, when Cassandra didn't immediately respond. "You did save poor little Syr from those nasty brutes."
"Dark Knight..." the moment the words left her lips, Cass suddenly shook her head. "No, I don't deserve that..."
"Dark Knight it is!" Syr said, clapping, clearly ignoring the second half of the statement. "You definitely deserve a nice alias like that, and that's exactly the kind of name the gods love giving heroes! Now, what will the two of you be having?" Syr asked, smiling brightly as she took out a notepad to take it all down.
* * *
"There is the small matter of aliases," Freya said, looking out across the cacophony of worthless dregs that made up the gods. Part of her wished she had simply avoided the duty of leading denatus, but she did get to put her thumbs on the scale, as she so pleased. "Three adventurers of the Loki familia have just hit Level Two. Drake Holt, Cassandra Cain, and Xulia Xacobi." She now had a name for that awful visage, the rotting maggot-ridden soul that dared stand so close to the object of her love. The bitch had even traumatized her.
"I have something I have to say!" Loki called out, suddenly. Freya simply coolly regarded her, curious what it was. Some defense for the rapid leveling of not one, not two, but three members of her familia? "Xulia, ah, she wanted to request an alias for herself."
"That is highly irregular. Denied," Freya said. She didn't need any more reason than that Xulia wanted it, to do exactly the opposite.
"No! I have to make the suggestion!" Loki said, pounding the table angrily. "You can reject it if you want. But we made a deal, and I don't get what I want if I don't make the suggestion."
"What kind of deal?" One of the peanut gallery asked.
"The kind of deal I don't want to talk about," Loki hedged.
"If you can't offer a compelling reason for us to take on such an irregular suggestion, then we can hardly be expected to do it. Denied." She was curious what Xulia had to offer, but-
"Fine!" Loki said. "Fine. She said... I can grope her breasts all I want until the next Denatus, if I put in this suggestion."
"Somebody's finally discovered Loki's one weakness!" "It isn't much of a discovery!" "I want to hear the name!" "The name that's worth getting groped by the pervert goddess for!" Loki's cheeks burned at that last common, but she glared at Freya, silently demanding that the other goddess let her say the name.
"Very well." Freya sighed. Maintaining good relations with the Loki familia was important, to keep the peace in Orario, and to ensure that Cassandra wasn't put in danger in some future conflict with them. "Let's hear this alias."
"Ah-he-he-hem," Loki said, exaggeratedly clearing her throat, producing a piece of paper. "This is the alias, without anything added on by me, it's just the name she suggested," she said, defensively. "Here goes: The Most Beautiful Woman in the World, Much More Beautiful Than Me, The Person Saying This." Loki scowled at the note, putting it down. "There, now we can all agree that's a terrible alias and move on."
"What was that again?" Came a voice from the gallery.
"Yeah, I couldn't quite hear it."
"I think she intentionally mumbled. She's trying to cheat her own child!"
"How terrible! We should make sure to tell this girl all about it!"
Loki grit her teeth, letting out a sigh. "The alias is! The Most Beautiful Woman in the World, Much More Beautiful Than Me, The Person Saying This!" She boomed the words out, the level of her voice far outpacing the appearance of her spindly body. "It's way too much of a mouthful, don't you all agree."
"Wow... Loki thinks her own child is more beautiful than her." "Such low self-esteem..." "It's always sad to see a god beat up on themselves like this."
Loki's hands were clenching and unclenching, but Freya rather suspected it was more to remind herself of the reward than to control her anger at the humiliation. "The alias suggestion is tabled. Any other suggestions?" There was actually a shocking silence. No, Xulia would not be permitted to have such a ridiculous alias. Firstly, it was absurd, and not in the spirit of how they normally made aliases absurd. Secondly, it was far too long. Lastly, it was inappropriate, as the most beautiful woman in the world was most certainly Cassandra Cain, and not Xulia Xacobi. "I would suggest Black Agony."
"Ooo, I like it!" "Black Agony... Black Agony! Yeah, it sounds good!" The gods quickly came to an agreement on the name offered.
Loki slumped in her chair, giving Freya a haggard look of gratitude.
"The next one... Cassandra Cain. I suggest Dark Knight. Any objections?" Her voice was sharp and brisk, as she glanced over the group of gods, daring any of them to object or offer their own names. They did not. "Very well. Dark Knight it is. And last of all... Drake Holt. Any suggestions?" She honestly had no clear idea. Casanova would perhaps have been fitting, but it was rather too close to Cass to her taste.
"I don't know much about him," one of the gods said.
"Yeah. What's up with this guy! Tell us more about him!"
"He's kind of tall. We could call him, Slenderman."
"That's terrible, even by our standards!"
"Well I don't see you making a better suggestion!"
"If I might," came the voice of Ishtar, out of the group of them. "I actually happen to know a few things about Drake Holt." The silence that followed was enveloping, everyone - even, Freya would have had to admit, herself - listening intensely. "Most particularly, he is quite taken with one of my familia members, and visits her almost every evening." Freya felt a certain anger rise in her chest at that. He had not just Cassandra, but three other women, and they still weren't enough for him? He was also visiting a prostitute?
"Every evening... she must be really good!" "Which one is this?"
"Haruhime Sanjouno," Ishtar said.
"Wha- the renard?" One of the gods asked. "The one that always pukes on her clients?"
"I heard she faints."
"I hear she pukes and faints, and then Aisha Belka beats you up for almost killing her, because she passed out on her back! Not that any of my familia members would know about that from personal experience." You didn't need an Arcanum or the ability to see souls to know that was a lie.
"There hasn't been any vomit in her room," Ishtar said mildly.
"Eh? Haruhime is cured? The maiden fox is now ready to get pounded in all three holes by any takers?"
"Doubtful. And you will not be getting your money back if she pukes on you during coitus."
"Bah. Forget it, then."
"As fascinating as this bit of gossip is, I don't know quite how it can be translated into an alias," Freya said.
"I would like to suggest: Tail Lover."
Freya stiffened, knowing that the gaggle of fools here would no doubt jump on such an awful name. "How about Fox's Friend, if you have to pick an alias based on that," Loki suggested, but nobody seemed ready to take her up on it.
"Tail Lover. It's got multiple meanings! Because he has sex with a renard, and people talk about chasing tail!"
The fact that anyone could get through leading an entire Denatus without murdering one of the gods present was as good of evidence as any that there was some sort of divine being above even the gods, an uncreated ur-creator, and that he hated them all. "We could name him based on something other than sex. Loki, how does he fight?"
"He throws knives-"
"Tail Lover! Tail Lover! Tail Lover!"
"Happy Ending," Freya interrupted. It was at least marginally better than Tail Lover. For one, it didn't enshrine his infidelity into the heavens... though perhaps it would be better if it did...
"Happy Ending... ooo, it's nice." "He might not realize what it means." "Yeah, he would probably think it's about how much of a hero he is, gehehe!" "I like it!" "It's even better than Tail Lover!" "All hail Freya, the best namer in all Denatus!" "Why even bother asking for suggestions when you'll just come up with the best ones anyway?"
Freya smiled thinly. "Loki, I must admit that I am curious how, exactly, three members of your familia all broke the record on the same day, and by such a margin..." she said, shutting up the gods with an interesting bit of gossip. "But I suppose we simply have to accept it. What goes on inside a familia, stays inside a familia. Unless you'd share willingly?"
"Nah," was Loki's succinct reply.
The morons were now whispering about Loki instead of about Drake or Freya, which was as good as it ever got at Denatus. She moved on to another couple of adventurers who had leveled up recently.
