Chapter 21- Retest

The practical test in magic, which was nerve-wracking in many ways, was over and the retest period had arrived.

Squinting in the glare of the sun, I went to the training center as I had done yesterday.

The venue for the re-test is basically the same as yesterday and the day before. For the horseback riding test, we went to the riding ground and for the swordsmanship test, we went to the ground. However, due to a lack of manpower, the retests are mixed grade tests.

Teachers are also busy grading tests and doing their normal duties. The first semester will be over soon, so they will have to prepare grade reports.

I walked into the training center, secretly sympathizing with the dizzying busyness of the teachers.

The Magic retest room was packed with people, not as busy as it was yesterday, but still reasonably busy. There were students from other grades as well, so some of the faces were unfamiliar to me.

But they seem to know me and as soon as our eyes meet, they say, “Eh? Charlotte-san!” I was surprised.

“Good day to you! Are you here to retest as well, Charlotte-san?”

“No, I’m just here to support my friend. I’m satisfied with the results of the test.”

“Ah, is that so?”

“Yes. Well, I’ll take my leave now.”

Bowing my head just enough to bail, I smile and leave the place.

As my eyes wandered around the room looking for the person I wanted to see, I noticed familiar dark hair.

I follow the figure with his hair as beautiful as the night sky as a landmark.

“Your Highness Grayson…..!”

I almost lost him in the crowd and called his name as quickly as I could and he stopped dead in his tracks.

He looked back at me with his glossy black hair swinging and reflected me in his eyes.

“Charlotte-san, Why are you here? You didn’t come here to take a retest, did you?”

His Highness Grayson walked up to me through the crowd and tilted his head.

I smile softly at his question.

“It’s in support of your Highness Grayson. I thought your Highness would come to take the re-test. Well, maybe it’s none of my business, but ……”

Scratching my cheek, I added, “If I’m in your way, I’ll leave”.

Sometimes people’s expectations and support can become a burden and it’s better not to put too much pressure on them. And this is completely my own self-interest……

I cringe as I seriously worry that I might be a nuisance.

His Highness Grayson narrowed his eyes slightly at me as I looked left and right.

“No, I don’t think you’re disturbing me. If it’s all right with you, Charlotte-san, by all means go ahead and watch my retest. I’m glad you’re supporting me.”

His Highness Grayson’s expression softened slightly as he said this and he was as beautiful as a star shining in the night sky.

My cheeks flushed red and I couldn’t help but admire his face.

I turned my head slightly to hide my burning cheeks, thinking, ‘Beauty is a sin’……

“Well, that’s good to know! I’ll be watching from afar, so good luck with that ……!”

“Ah.”

His Highness Grayson, who received my ale without a trace of disgust, softened his eyes slightly.

Perhaps he was not too nervous or perhaps the atmosphere itself was softer.

After cooling my burning cheeks, I said a few words to His Highness Grayson and then left.

Maybe I didn’t need to come. I wondered what I would have done if His Highness Grayson had been in deep thought, but I didn’t seem to need to worry about that. He is indeed a prince of the Kingdom of Soleil.

As I moved to the edge of the training center, I looked at his prominent black hair and patted my chest in relief.

Leaning against a tree trunk, I looked around and saw a man who appeared to be a teacher on top of ────the  school building.

Floating in the air like Bianca-sensei, he coughs once with a magic circle in his hand for loudspeakers.

“Students who wish to retest, please be quiet.”

With that single word as a cue, the place fell silent at once and nothing could be heard but the rustling of leaves and the chirping of birds.

Amidst the uncomfortably high tension, our attention was drawn to the male teacher floating in mid-air.

“We’ll now conduct a re-test of Magical Studies. Before we begin the test, there are a few points I would like you to listen to. First of all. The re-test will be a mixed grade test────”

Taking a small piece of paper the size of a notepad out of his pocket, the teacher read out the precautions without hesitation.

The content was not so much an explanation of the test itself, but rather an explanation of the process and procedures for retesting.

After spending about 15 minutes reading through all the notes, the teacher took a breath and said, “Whew…..”

“That’s all the precautions. Now, we will begin the retest. Please line up in single file by the clock in the school building. The order will be the same as last year, first come, first served.”

As soon as he said so, the number of people who wanted to retest flooded into the front of the school building.

Among them, of course, was His Highness Grayson, who was making his way through the crowd to get to the front of the line, even if only a little.

‘Is this going to line up properly?’ Although I was anxious, everyone was doing surprisingly well. It was far from a neat line, but at least they were all lined up in one row.

While I was unintentionally exclaiming, “Oh ……,” the student in the front stepped forward.

That looks like a third grader. After all, what number did His Highness Grayson get ……? He’s tucked in at the front of the line, isn’t he?

While the other first-year students were pushed to the back of the line, His Highness Grayson, the only survivor, was third in line from the front.

Squinting at his dark hair, visible even from a distance, I waited for his turn.

As the first and second students leave, satisfied with the results of their retests, it’s finally His Highness Grayson’s turn.

He leaps in front of the teacher with an air of dignity that belies his first-year status.

“My name is Grayson Lee Soleil, first year C class. Pleased to meet you.”

“Hmm…… a first year student. It’s unusual to see you here so early. I’m pretty sure the test was defense-related…..”

Stroking his beard and flipping through his papers, the teacher confirms the contents of the test and then goes down to earth.

Once he had placed the papers in the corner of the training center and cast a protective spell to prevent them from being blown away by the wind, he stood in front of His Highness Grayson.

The teacher, who deploys barrier magic through word art, ensures the safety of the surroundings in case of emergency.

Trapped inside, His Highness Grayson stood in the center of the barrier without saying a word.

Finally, His Highness Grayson’s revenge is about to begin. I hope this time he can get a perfect score. ……

Filled with anxiety and anticipation, I clutched my chest and looked at them.

As the tension is building in this place, the teacher holds his palm out in front of him.

“Now, we will begin the retest of Grayson Lee Soleil ──── 《Wind Cutter》.”
