Chapter 8: Anxiety

It’s tempting to think that my workload will be reduced, but I have to admit I’m anxious. No matter how you look at it, it’s impossible for just one person to take charge of the lead. Dina-sama is certainly strong, but she can’t do everything by herself. There’s even Silas-sensei, the most problematic teacher, at the front of the line……

I feel a twinge of uneasiness at the presence of the teacher who seems to be the most likely to get lost.

I took one look at the green-haired one out of the corner of my eye and decided, ‘I knew it wasn’t a workload you could handle alone.”

“I am very pleased with your sentiments, Dina-sama. But I think it is too much of a burden.”

“I’m glad you’re concerned, but I can handle it. This is no problem for me.”

With a look of dismay, Dina-sama repeated, “I’ll be fine.”

Perhaps because she’s the most experienced escort in the disciplinary committee, so she seemed to be full of confidence.

But strangely, she doesn’t look like she’s ‘confident’ and even feels sort of…… impatient.

I persisted, wondering, “Why are you so desperate?”

“You say ‘no problem,’ but I still think the burden is too much. It’s not like we’re short of manpower, so I don’t think there’s any need to go to the trouble …… of overworking yourself.”

I insisted, “Let’s share the workload properly,” and gently declined Dina-sama’s proposal.

I was able to overcome the temptation to reduce my workload, and I strengthened my resolve.

“Don’t let greed get the better of you,” I told myself, while Dina-sama clenched her teeth.

“No need to overdo it, you say,……? Don’t tell me ──── you underestimate my ability too!”

Suddenly, Dina-sama, who was shouting angrily, rushes towards me, as if she was about to grab me.

I couldn’t help but be dumbfounded as she glared at me with sharp eyes.

I stopped moving and thought to myself, “Come to think of it, this is how I felt when I picked up the letter in the carriage”.

I wondered what to do in the face of this déjà vu-filled scene.

I don’t remember underestimating Dina-sama’s ability. In fact, I respect her. I just judged that it would be difficult for one person to protect nearly 30 students alone. I didn’t mean to imply that she was incompetent.

“Was there something wrong with the way I said it?” I lowered my eyebrows in annoyance as I thought.

I could make an excuse right now, but I was worried that it might add fuel to the fire.

While I was trying to find the right moment to explain myself, the people around us began to fuss, ‘What’s going on?’ “What’s going on?”, They said.

Dina-sama’s eyes widened in surprise as if she had finally noticed the piercing stares from those around her. Then, quickly understanding the situation, she bowed her head vigorously.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry ……! I must have misunderstood! Miss Charlotte was just worried about me and I …… I’m really sorry!”

Dina-sama hurriedly apologizes, “I yelled at you unreasonably,……,” and she bows her head.

She seemed to be quite remorseful and was giving off a dull and dark aura.

I shook my head and said, “Don’t worry about it,” in front of her dejected face.

“It’s enough for me that you understood that it was a misunderstanding. There was a problem with the way I said it, too. ……”

“No, it was not Miss Charlotte’s fault. It was my fault.”

‘I am truly sorry,’ she bowed her head repeatedly, and Dina-sama apologized from the bottom of her heart.

After apologizing as much as she could, she finally lifted her face.

Then, with a weaker attitude than before, she returned to the main subject.

“I’m really sorry for yelling at you, But please accept the change in placement.”

Dina-sama, who was desperate, clasped her hands together as she said, ‘Please!”

She looked panicked as she bit down and asked for approval.

I let out a sigh as I was directed to a gaze that seemed to cling to me.

It’s like she’s being driven by something.

“I understand. I accept the reassignment. However, please be sure to call me when you are in trouble. No matter how good you are, there are times when you can’t handle things on your own.”

While appealing, “I’m not underestimating you,” I placed a condition on her.

While I was worried that she might collapse from overwork, Dina-sama willingly accepted the conditions.

“Ok, I promise. I wont overdo it.”

Dina-sama nodded with a solemn expression on her face and placed her hand on her chest as if making a vow.

Staring at me with her serious amber eyes, I decided that she was not lying.

Although I still felt uneasy, I had no choice but to back down now that she had agreed to my conditions.

“Then, I will leave the lead to you. I’ll take my leave now.”

“ Are you sure you’re okay?” I swallow the words,  and bow gracefully.

In front of me, who was desperately trying to suppress my wavering emotions, Dina-sama nodded cheerfully.

“Ah, I’ll see you later.”

Dina-sama, waving a small hand at me, smiles with satisfaction.

I turned on my heel with mixed feelings in front of her, who was acting in a good mood.

Huh,…… was this really the right thing to do? To be honest, I’m not sure……. But since I’ve decided to leave it to her, I should trust her. Maybe there is something deeper at play here,…….

I shook my head and said to myself, ‘I’ve got to let go of my doubts for a while.”

Somehow, I managed to abandon my thoughts and headed for the back of the line.

At the back of the line were the members of the student council and Clarissa-sama.

“──── Huh? Miss Charlotte?”

With his eyes wide open in surprise, the first person to call out to me was ──── the Student Council Treasurer, Isaac-sama.

As he tilts his head curiously, Crown Prince Leonardo and Clarissa-sama also turn their eyes toward me.

My cheeks involuntarily twitched as I was already spotted by the people who need attention.

I didn’t hear that the most important people were gathered at the tail end. …… I thought they were in the center, where it was safest. They are the future of the empire, and they are important.

“My guess was off,” I blurted out, and for a moment I thought about turning back, but decided against it.

I decided that it was not a good idea to overturn what had just been decided.

I concluded that I had no choice but to endure in order to reduce the confusion at the site, and I continued on my way.

I reluctantly got alongside His Royal Highness Crown Prince Leonardo and let out a deep sigh.

My sister, who was diagonally behind me, was glaring at me with a terrible expression ……. Well, I don’t really know how my sister feels,…… but it wouldn’t be much fun if she joined me and Crown Prince Leonardo halfway through the trip after we had managed to separate ourselves. But let me tell you this: ……I had no intention of getting involved with his Highness at all!

“I’m not doing it on purpose,……,” I lamented as I endured the stare that pierced me from diagonally behind.
