“Welcome to my domain,” I announced as we walked up to the dorm building. I began to notice some people were staring at Jinn. I don’t blame him, she was very dressed as an Indian… America is always surprised at other cultures entering the area.
“Interesting architecture,” she commented.
“Is it?”
“No, it’s very simple, but different from what I’m used to,” Jinn blatantly said and looked at me.
“Let’s go inside, a lot of guys keep staring at you,” I muttered and glanced over at some weird group of guys I notice every Sunday. I’m pretty sure they camp this dorm for all the girls living on the first floor.
I lead Jinn inside and to the elevator to the left side of the building. We head up to the third floor and end of the hallway. When we enter my room, she’s taken aback at how small it is.
“Umm,” she hummed and turned side to side.
“Make yourself as comfortable as you can, this is all the space I have to myself.”
“I see…”
I set all my bags down and my duffle bag back into my wardrobe. I then sit at my desk under my lofted bed and start up my computer. Jinn stood still at the entrance.
“Bathroom is in the door at your right if you need it. I have a mini fridge for snacks if you’re hungry, and water you can get from the bathroom sink in whatever cup you can find.”
“Okay…”
When my computer finally started up I began opening google and researching Djinns to get a better understanding of Jinn and what her purpose was besides granting me three wishes.
My eyes scan over so many definitions and historical descriptions of djinns, or Jinns… I get why she had said her name was ironic. What struck me though was reading the word demon on some of the articles I had found. I was concerned for myself. I turned and noticed Jinn still standing in her place. She was very patient. I didn’t know how long I was reading for, but it was over ten articles I had looked into.
“I uh…” I stuttered as I tried to find a way to bring up what I just read. “I read about your kind more so I have a better understanding of this situation.”
“And?” She said and adjusted her stance. She stiffened and raised her chin slightly as if she was preparing herself for whatever I was going to say about her.
“Articles saying that your kind are demonic?”
“Yes,” she admitted. “Those things have been said about my kind.”
“Are you?”
“Me personally or my kind?”
“Uh -” I was taken aback by her question. “Your kind?”
“My kind has their ways. I, on the other hand, have my own purposes.”
“And what would that be?” I crossed my right leg over my left knee and leaned back. “I’m not sure if I want to continue researching about Djinns if you could tell me yourself what you are and exactly the purpose you have…” I felt my heart race inside my chest as I spoke up. I felt a sting in my chest as I remembered who took the tone I had, and it was my mom… I felt disgusted. I uncrossed my knee and relaxed a bit.
Jinn took a deep breath and stood still as her face drew blank while staring into my eyes.
“Do you not want to tell?” I asked, trying to seem more passive than I was a second ago.
“Is that what you want me to do?”
“I’m asking you.” I began to notice something between us, how indecisive we both were when it came down to making decisions. I shook my head at the note and sighed loudly.
“Okay,” Jinn said hesitantly after I had sighed. I suddenly gestured to the floor.
“You can sit if you want?”

She nodded and sat down on the ground. I slid off my chair and sat on the floor with her.
“We are beings that aren’t humans, but we aren’t gods either. What I found is that over time my kind decided that they would not look up to a god or gods but become one as the human race seemed to be in awe of our species… We have powers that can be seen by the human eye. We are easier to believe in than trusting an entity that is invisible. We Djinns have caught the human’s interest and have similar powers to a god that humans began to worship us. Then came the naming of djinns being demonic because we are not Allah…” Jinn frowned and closed her eyes. She took a deep breath. “My kind began toying with humans, abusing them, and so much more…”
“Is that what you do?” I asked abruptly.
“No,” Jinn’s eyes flicked open with a fiery passion. “I found that I was created by Allah for his reason. I was an image in his eyes to help serve him, not to be above him like my kind thought they were to be. My kind was embarrassed of me for worshiping him and helping humans…” She gasped and then covered her mouth.
“Okay,” I said suddenly and held my hands up. “I get what you’re saying.” I stood up and walked over to my desk and leaned down to the mini fridge. I opened it up and grabbed an orange juice I had taken from the dining hall. I handed it to Jinn and sat down. “You answered my question, you’re not a demon. That’s what matters.”
“I am not a demon,” she repeated in a hushed tone. She held the orange juice tightly in her hands as the look of fear crossed her eyes.
I felt awkward and cleared my throat.
“So, what uh, what do you want to do?” I attempted to change subjects, but Jinn was not good at following.
“I don’t typically do much… I wait for orders.”
“You didn’t do anything fun before me?”
“No.”
“Okay then…” I bit my lower lip and turned to my computer. “You seemed to like watching Aladdin, maybe you’d maybe want to watch another movie or even a TV series?”
“Maybe.”
“What do you like in entertainment? I have most streaming platforms.”
“I like to read,” she answered. I turn with my mouth slightly ajar as I wasn’t expecting that as her answer.
“Oh, well we could go to the campus library if you want to find something to read?”
“If that’s what you want to do.”
I chuckled slightly.
“Yes, let’s hit up the library,” I concluded and stood up. When Jinn stood, I then looked at her clothes. “Wait,” I said and crossed my arms.
“What?” Jinn asked in a slightly panicked tone.
“Those clothes don’t fit in here…”
“What’s wrong with my clothes?”
“You stand out like hella badly,” I admitted as kindly as I could. “As much as it fits you, it’s drawing too many eyes towards you.”
“I can turn invisible if you -”
“Turning invisible creates more problems than it solves… I have some sweats and a hoodie you could throw on for the meantime. Afterwards we could find a store and get you something that you like.” I opened my wardrobe and began shuffling through the pile of clothes I had thrown in there. I wasn’t the best at organizing, and my dorm room size didn’t help being a slob. I found a pair of plaid sleep pants that may fit Jinn and then a black hoodie with a toothpaste stain on the sleeve. I handed it to her shyly. “Sorry…”
“Don’t be,” she said and grabbed the clothes. “You want me to blend in, I do as you wish.”
“How ironic,” I said and smiled. Jinn looked up at me with her own smile. It was cute.
