Kappa Téchnes, one of the newer fraternities on campus and also the smallest given they were established two years ago. They’re very small in the community, but they are making their way up the boards with their artistic community work within the city. I step up their ancient home, admiring the more Victorian styled structure built way back in the early 1900’s. I can’t see it well enough given it was eight at night and the sun had already set.
I step up the concrete steps and knock on the door while balancing a twelve pack of soda and a container of cookies I asked my grandma to pick up at the last minute. I’m not surprised my parents didn’t want to help me out, why would they want to waste money on something that has no value to them? I’m glad my grandma cares.
The door opens, blaring some typical pop music coming from the back of the house. A guy wearing a white shirt that’s been hand tye dyed greeted me.
“Hey there,” he said and the stench of beer rolled off his tongue. I try not to cringe at the bready scent.
“I’m here for the welcome party,” I stutter and look around for David inside.
“Oh yeah, come on in,” he said and backed away from the door. I step inside, hearing the boards creak under my weight.
To my right was the house's living room. Banners hand painted with their name hung before the large window, and everyone was standing around and visiting with the typical red plastic cup of their choice of beverage. I saw David in the middle of a few girls who definitely appeared wasted. They were giggling at whatever he was saying, and David isn’t that funny.
I approach David and smack him on the arm with my free hand.
“Dude, what the fuck?” I whispered.
“Oh hey! Oh god, you brought that. Uh, back at the music is the food area,” David said nonchalantly and turned back to his ladies.
“We were supposed to meet up and come together, what happened?”
“I had to stop by early to help set up, I offered the other day.”
“Thanks for telling me…” I muttered and looked at one of the girls intently staring at me. She wobbled back and forth on her heels. She was cute, with long blonde hair and blue eyes, but she was wreaking cheap beer. “Guess I’ll be back,” I announced and headed to the back of the house.
In the very old kitchen was a table of all kinds of snacks, and a lot of cookies.
Guess that’s why David didn’t want me to bring cookies… I thought as I added to the pile of cookies that everyone must have brought.
I noticed there were two kegs, one of them already on its side and barely full as someone came in and began pouring themselves a cup. The guy that grabbed his beer turned around and looked at me.
“Hey there, I’m Kevin, the cofounder of Kappa Téchnes.”
“I’m Cameron, one of the applicants,” I returned and reached out my right hand. Kevin firmly grasps my hand, feeling as if he’s going to break all the bones and shakes it sternly. I left my hand limp as I was shocked at how intimidating the guy was. He was buff, very smooth facial features, and just overall a walking douche. But, he seemed nice…
“Oh, sweet. We’re glad you could make it. Def grab a beer and get to know everyone here, especially Tyler. He’s the one wearing the tie dye toga,” Kevn laughed and swung back some beer. “And if you’re wanting to do anything stupid, the first bedroom on the right upstairs is where you can go, just lock the door behind you or you’ll have an audience.” Kevin bumped my left shoulder and laughed hard, then he headed back to the living room.
This is supposed to be a brilliant art frat that’s improving the community, not some typical fuck boy frat club that parties every weekend, I thought to myself as I cracked open one of my colas I brought with me.
I began walking around the house, ignoring everyone dancing and talking to one another. I admired all the artwork and photos along the walls of the halls, rooms, and entryway. There was so much variety in the works ranging from modern, abstract, scenery pieces, and then up to even photography. What stuck out to me most was their project board. On it was pinned all of their community work and their soon to be projects, one of them being a mural in the old town on a community center building. I felt a bit of inspiration hit me at the moment, thinking that maybe this could be my project for my portfolio in studio art.

“Like what you see?”
I turn and see Tyler in his tie dye toga. It was well crafted, very vibrant, and well fit on his fit body. Like Kevin, he too seemed to be another buffy douche bag.
“Yeah, it’s why I want to be a part of this frat. I like community work and helping others out with artwork.”
“Artwork is an essential in our lives whether people realize it or not,” Tyler agreed. “It’s in everything we do.”
“It is,” I agreed simply and glanced over a review in the local newspaper over one of their murals they did in a coffee shop.
“I’m Tyler.”
“Cameron.”
“Nice to meet you. I think I remember your application and the attachments of your art pieces. You had all the scenery artworks, am I correct?”
“Yeah, that’s mine.”
“They’re cool, I like your attention to detail.”
“Thanks, at least someone likes it…”
“Who doesn’t like your artwork?” Tyler lifted his right arm and leaned against the wall. He faced me more while we talked. Between sentences he would drink his beer.
“Studio art professor says I don’t have much meaning behind my artwork.”
“Ah, that bullshit…” Tyler muttered in agreement. “Some professors can be like that, seeing potential in people. Some days, you gotta make art for yourself and only yourself.”
“Just the way he wants to grade my final is based on the personal meaning behind the portfolio being unified in all six pieces.”
“Hmmm,” Tyler hummed and scratched his chin. “Sounds like a challenge. Might be hard but at least it’s only for one grade.”
“Yeah,” I sighed very enthusiastically. “I just don’t know what to do. Was hoping to get some ideas in time before the semester ends, especially if I join here I could find some meaning behind my works of art.”
“Oh yeah dude, that sounds dope. Get to know everyone here most definitely. We’re going to respond to applicants starting next week so please, enjoy yourself right now,” Tyler said and nodded his head. “Nice meeting you Cameron.” He smiled and walked to the kitchen.
I frowned as I watched the surroundings of people partying, drinking, playing tabletop pong, and raving to loud music all around me. It was overstimulating as I felt the urge to walk out and go back to the solitude of my dorm room. I noticed that David was all caught up making out with that blonde chick eyeing me when I first got here. Despite him being my only friend here at college, he really wasn’t here for me. I stuffed my hands in my pocket and headed for the door. As I closed it behind me, I cautiously walked back to campus grounds in the darkness and silence.
