I opened my eyes and a bustling city square came into view. Lots of players began to appear right in front of my eyes. Most of them are poking in the air so I tried to do the same. Then the UI that was a little transparent came into view. It was impressive seeing how it neatly appeared in my vision.

Let's start checking my inventory. There were 10 pieces of bread, 5 gold, and 5 weapons. These were the starting items given to new players for free based on the thread that I read in the forums not long ago. I equipped the Novice Dagger and it appeared on my hand instantly. Without a warning, I tried to attack the air in front of me.

"Woah there, young lady."

"Oh, I'm sorry."

There was an armored man waving his hands up who came to me. Above his head appeared 'City Guard'. It was an NPC but it looked so realistic that I thought it was also a player like me.

"If you want to test out your blade, you can visit the training grounds."

"Oh, okay. Uhm, where exactly is it, sir...?"

"Call me Ben. The training grounds should be just right up at that alley. Turn left and you should see it."

At that moment, his name 'Ben' was added to the NPCs name above his head. This piqued my interest slightly. A ping sound was heard and I noticed a blinking mark on my minimap. This must be the training ground.

"I see. Then where can I buy weapons?"

"There should be a weapon shop just beside the training grounds. Uncle Dai should be able to help you there."

"Thank you!"

"No problem. Have a nice day!"

With that I jog pass by him and followed the his direction. I'm amazed how the NPCs here are able to make a conversation just like in real life, as expected from a VR game. After some moments, the training ground came into view. True to his words, a shop with a blacksmith logo was near it.

The bells above the doorway signals my sudden intrusion into the shop. Inside were two people. One was inspecting a sword while the other waved towards me with a smile. He must be Uncle Dai. After coming into that conclusion, 'Uncle Dai' appeared above him.

"Welcome young lady! Do you need anything?"

"Uhh... ehh..."

Before I could say anything, the person that was inspecting the sword made his way to Uncle Dai to purchase the sword and made his exit. There were no text above him so maybe he was a player? Anyways, I muster up my courage and asked talked to the NPC Uncle Dai.

"Ben told me that you sell weapons so I wanted to check."

"Ahh, no worries! My weapons are of good quality. Don't be shy to check them out."

With an enthusiastic smile, Uncle Dai let me browse his arsenal. Various boxes containing the information of each weapon appeared as I looked at Uncle Dai's product. As I was browsing, I was also adjusting the settings of the my UI. From it's opacity to the sizes of the boxes, there were various options. It might've looked like I was pointing repeatedly on various weapon. This made me think for a moment. If we were given five beginner weapons, why would that previous player buy a sword here?

"Is everything alright young lady? You look so serious."

"Uhh. I was just curious on that previous customer you had."

"Ahh that young lad? Yeah, he also looked seriously on some of my weapons here. In the end he was able to buy a suitable sword for him. He must know what he wants. What about you, young lady? Anything that catches your eye?"

"Well, if I may ask, can you check on these weapons I have?"

"Check? You mean appraise?"

"Appraise?"

I took out the five novice weapons I had. It was the Novice Sword, Novice Dagger, Novice Orb, Novice Bow, and Novice Staff. One by one, Uncle Dai appraised the weapons. Then he set it all aside and faced me.

"How was it Uncle Dai? Did you appraise them?"

"These weapons have the same quality as the average weapons I have but they will break if handled poorly. You can use them to kill some slimes but not on goblins because of how fragile they are. Once they are broken, I can't repair them."

"I see."

"That would be 5 silver for all of the weapons appraised, young lady."

"Ehhh?! I didn't know there was a fee."

"Hey! There's nothing free in this world. Hahaha! But since Ben recommended you my shop, I'll teach you how to appraise as a bonus. What do you think?"

A small box notification popped out in my screen.

'Would you like to learn the skill 'Appraisal'?'

I was caught off guard but this was interesting. Apparently, conversing with NPCs would result to this kind of things huh?

"A question first, what does appraisal exactly do?"

"Appraisal can identify any items you have. Depending on your knowledge, you can even appraise unknown items."

"I can identify what's trash and what's treasure?"

"Exactly! It all depends on your knowledge though. So, how about it?"

"Yes! Please teach me Uncle Dai."

After some few minutes listening to Uncle Dai's instruction, I tried to appraise my weapons again and again. A box filled with information about the weapon appraised appeared. There was more information compared to the time when I was browsing Uncle Dai's weapon, If that was the case, wouldn't it be fine if I didn't learn Appraise?

"That would be true. But if you want to have more information, learning how to Appraise would be beneficial. Try Appraising one of my wares."

True to his words, there were more information when I used Appraised. When I was just browsing before, the only information that was seen was the weapon's name, the attack it gives and it's price. But now, there were additional information such as the weight, the quality, item description, and the bonus stats it give .

"Here, try Appraising this."

Uncle Dai showed me one of his swords to appraise. But unlike the weapons that I appraised before, the sword that Uncle Dai showed had [???] on some parts.

"What are these question marks?"

"You can't fully identify some of the items yet since you just learned the skill today. But if you learn more about things, you'll be able to appraise unknown items."

"I see. Thank you so much Uncle Dai!"

"Haha! Don't mention it. So back to business, would you like to buy any weapons here?"

"Well... I wanted to become a mage but there are no other orbs here."

"A mage huh? If that's the case, then your Novice Orb is enough for now. Unless you use it to bash your opponent's skull right from the start, you'll be fine."

"Are there any shops here that sell items for mages?"

"Try visiting the Magic Academy. Just go back to the main street and follow it until you stand before a gate. That would be the Magic Academy."

"Thank you Uncle Dai! Here's the 5 silver!"

I immediately left Uncle Dai's shop and followed his instructions. The travel wasn't far but I found myself panting after reaching my next destination. There are also players going in and out of the Magic Academy already. Let's check this place first.
