“Another truck carrying produce has gone missing. This is the third missing truck in the past month. Police are investigating, but no credible leads have risen. One driver said that his truck vanished while he was-“
I turned the radio off. I already hated my trucking job enough as it is, I don’t need to be scared of it too. It’s just a job to get me through business school. I’ve been studying to be an accountant. I like doing math, and my parents encouraged me to go into accounting because ‘Someone needs to do it, and better you than me’. But classes are expensive. I’m convinced the entire college system is either outdated or an outright scam. Why should I have to pay for classes about art when I’m a business major anyway?
My ranting thoughts were interrupted by a bright flash of light. My first thought was that it was a UFO, an alien encounter like the ones I’ve always read about. I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise that I blacked out after whatever-it-was happened. I woke up in some kind of jail cell. Had I done something wrong while I was unconscious? Hard to say. I’ve always been a little on-the-fence about alien encounters, but who knows what they’d do to your mind if they really did abduct you. I walked up to the bars to get a better understanding about my surroundings.
I was in a small cell. Two walls were stone brick, two were iron bars. There were other cells but they were empty. Each cell had enough room to pace in, which was good because I pace when I’m anxious, and a small bed built into the wall. Didn’t look at all comfortable.
Outside the cells was a decent sized room. There was a desk and chair, presumably for some kind of guard, but both were covered in crates. In fact, most of the room had crates in them. Some of them I recognized as the stuff I was transporting, and some of them had the logos of other transportation companies I was familiar with. Was this some kind of highway robbery?
There were no windows, so I’m assuming I’m either underground or the room I’m in is in the center of a complex. The walls were made of stone bricks and the lighting was produced from lanterns mounted on the walls. It really gave off that medieval dungeon feel, right down to the rusty bars and mold. The upkeep in here wasn’t very great, which was good news to me because that probably meant I could break the door off of its hinges easily.
I slammed my weight into the cage door and was quickly proven wrong. Those stupid action shows really didn’t show how painful slamming your shoulder into things was. I’d need a better idea. If I could just find some bar to use to pry the door open with, that would be great.
As I was looking for one, an individual carrying a large crate came into the room. The crate was blocking their vision, though they seemed to be familiar enough with the room to be able to navigate it instinctively.
“Hey!” I shouted, apparently startling them. They dropped the crate, cabbage spilling everywhere. They turned towards me and what I saw shocked me to my core.
The girl carrying the cabbage had one giant eye in place of two normal eyes.
Naturally, I felt like screaming. I’m not sure if I did, though. I certainly felt like I was, but I can’t say if any sound came out or not. My legs gave out and I collapsed onto the bed behind me. After I regained my composure, I asked

“Uhm… what are you?”
The girl, apparently just as startled as I was, didn’t answer, choosing instead just to stare at me.
“You should not be awake yet, I think” she said. “The powder we have given you should not yet have worn off”
I was drugged. That explains a lot. She didn’t have one eye, I was just high on something.
“What did you give me? Because it looks to me” I chuckled “like you have one eye” I don’t know why I felt the need to say that, maybe I was just trying to ease the tension in my mind. Maybe I was genuinely curious. I’m not sure.
“That’s because I do have one eye.” The shape of her eyebrow contorted. If she had two separate eyes, I’m sure she’d be raising one of her eyebrows to give me a confused look as if I’d just said something absolutely stupid. “I’m…. Are there no people with one eye where you’re from?”
“No, there aren’t people with one giant eye where I’m from! There are no people with giant eyes anywhere except in myths, and those people certainly aren’t the size of normal humans!”
“Well there’s no need to get hostile with me, I was just asking”. She crossed her arms and walked out of the room. A second passed before I shouted again.
“Hey! Get me out of here!”
