Chapter 9: Chapter Nine

As we continued north, I was both fascinated and relieved to see a gradual increase in vegetation. Soon enough we could see a town on the horizon. It looked smaller than the one we had left, which Clara informed me was the capital of the province called Mountainside, but it also looked a lot cleaner. Where Mountainside had buildings made mostly of sheet metal and had a generally rusty feel to it, this one was built of bit more wood. It still had a lot of sheet metal though. I guess it was just a monoeye thing. It had few general stores, a town hall, and a few houses. Most of the towns area was comprised of fields.

Clara pulled into a parking lot at a shop that had a few people in it. By the time we had gotten there the sun was going down. She had gone back to lay down in the truck bed. I was tired, but I also wanted to look around a bit. 

The general store was open. I was a little surprised to see fluorescent lights above me. It had the same feel as the inside of a truck stop, but without the gas station elements since all of the automobiles were fueled by magic. I wonder how humans used these things if they didn’t have magic energy? Maybe human settlements have more public transportation.

There was a Monoeye behind the counter creating patterns in the air with fire. It was strange. I didn’t see anyone in Mountainside using magic. Then again, I didn’t see that many people in general. This individual was a younger male who didn’t seem to notice I had walked in, which was okay with me because I was just browsing anyway. 

There was a lot of snack food. At least, I think it was snack food. I couldn’t read the writing here. After I had finished browsing the isles I began to walk out. As I was passing the door, I heard it.

“Wuahh!! A- a human!” I turned in time to see the young man behind the counter stumble backwards, accidentally launching fire into the air. 

The building was now on fire.
