Phoebe knocked on the door to the garage. “It’s me.”
Walking into the dim room, she clutched the bucket in her hands close. She understood now what Julia’s “bitch of a Consumption” had been. Her truck had been moved to the driveway, making space for a mass of trailing vines; greenbriar thorns and thin, woody stems mixed with thick muscadine. The plants (plant?) grew from three pots which were arranged in a triangle. Bulbous rootlike structures jutted out of the mucky soil, barely contained by the plastic. Their appearance reminded Phoebe of ginger. The vines flowed into each-other and clung to any surface they could, climbing up along the ceiling before hanging back down. All of it was alive. Unlike animals or fae, Consumptions treated plants with more kindness.
The plant matter was concentrated near a wall, where an old mattress had been laid down in the middle of the triangle. And on the mattress kneeled Silver. Muscadine held him in place and pinned his arms back, rendering his claws useless. He was afforded movement, but only enough to keep him somewhat comfortable.
Yuli loafed on a nearby table- a second line of defense in case Silver managed to slash through anything. Or, maybe Yuli was the first line, and the vines were only there to make things easier. The broken part of Silver’s tail had been set and bandaged, but still served as a reminder of what would happen if he tried to escape.
