Ear-splitting wails erupted from the television. The heroine had slipped up, leaving an opening for the killer to finally take her.
“Man that’s a lot of blood,” Phoebe said. She rested on the couch, watching dark red spew from the woman’s neck.
“Practical effects!” Julia responded. “Lady should have been more careful.”
Phoebe was the one who had picked the movie; it was the first horror flick she’d watched since her run-in with Connell and Silver. Julia had given it a glowing recommendation, and she’d wondered- would it upset her? Would a movie like this still be fun to watch?
No, it wasn’t upsetting. That was a relief. But it hadn’t been scary, either. Instead of the usual jolts of adrenaline, she found herself eyeing the way the killer wound his fingers into his victim’s shirt.
Julia hit pause when the front door opened. The train from Ottawa to Virginia had taken two days, and now Cat and Bluebell had returned with–hopefully–Kirk. Cat had been on edge ever since their conversation. Drinking cup after cup of tea and fearing another train disaster. But when he entered there was a grin on his face, and Phoebe could only interpret it as a sign of good news.
“We’re back,” Bluebell said, closing the door and wiping his shoes on the mat. Phoebe peered at them from the living room- Kirk was nowhere to be found.
“Did everything go ok?” She asked.
