“Why are you so irresponsible?” Asmeret cawed. “You never did the reading?”
“I didn’t wanna overload her with information!” Julia folded her arms. The two of them stood in her living room, the same one they’d grown up together in. She had since repainted and bought a new TV, but the way the late night shadows crawled along the walls was still immensely familiar to Asmeret. Both of their feathers were ruffled, with Julia’s longer, still-damp plumes bristling upwards like spines.
“And look what happened. Of course she would do something desperate. She’s traumatized, not stupid!”
“Even if a reading shows the monster can be killed without hurting her, Cat says it might be a fledgling.”
Asmeret cocked their head towards the ceiling and grimaced. “He’s putting his ideals over our safety. So are you. That thing should have been killed immediately.”
“If you feel so unsafe here, why don’t you go home and watch birds at the park?”
“Julia!” Venom dripped from each syllable as it left Asmeret’s beak with a hiss. “And no I won’t go home. I came all the way here in the dead of night. I’m going to do my job.” They grabbed their cardigan with a huff.
