A nice cooling sensation covered Raul body. He felt weightless and free, like a bird in the wind. The sound of splashing soon broke his emersion, and the cooling sensation on his skin started to become painful as a chill entered his body. He reluctantly opened his eyes to find the devil staring down at him.
“Don’t move, you need to let this soak in some more.” She ordered while stirring the bath water.
She sighed at the obvious fear in his eyes and said, “It won’t hurt, well, not compared to your tolerance at least. If there’s anything you want to say feel free to just say it.”
Raul’s body trembled at the sound of her voice, and his lips opened and closed uselessly. He finally gritted his teeth, and stared right at her before asking, “Am. Am I still handsome?” in a worried tone.
Marina’s face visibly twitched in disbelief before she wordlessly brought a hand mirror for him. What reflected was his handsome face with even more refined and impeccable looking skin. The few imperfections in his features looked like they were being smoothened out, the same applied to the rest of his body.
He sighed in relief and sank deeper into the bath with his eyes closed. He wanted to go back to sleep, but try as he might, he couldn’t ignore the burning gaze on him.
“You told me to soak more. Is there anything else, or are you just enjoying the show?” He asked in exasperation.
“… Don’t you have anything else you want to say or ask?”
“… Not particularly.” He closed his eyes again. He waited a couple minutes, but he could still feel that burning gaze on him.
“What the hell do you want me to ask!” He snapped in irritation. Why couldn’t she just talk about what she wanted to talk about?
“Don’t you want to complain? Or refuse to do the training? Or at the very least tone down the training?” She finally asked.
He shook his head. “No. Why? Did you deliberately make it more dangerous than you thought I could handle?”
“No, I made it to what I speculated your limits to be… though I never actually expected you to match it.”
“Since it’s something I can do, then there’s obviously no reason to change it.” He ignored the last part she muttered.

“…Are you sane?” Marina couldn’t help tilting her head.
In her mind this training program was impossible for a person to do for a whole month. Her intent had been to barter it to once or twice a week and spend the rest of the days as they had the previous two months. “You realize that if I or you make a single mistake we’ll die, right?”
“I’m perfectly sane, thank you.” Raul said while showing the whites of his eyes. “And are you going to make a mistake?”
“Impossible.” Marina answered with certainty.
“Then we have no problems, I trust you.” Seeing her still giving him a look like he was crazy, he clicked his tongue in irritation. “You know what your problem is? You’re looking down on me.”
Her face twitched and she started to speak, but he just shook his head. “Don’t try to deny it. You’ve been delicate with your questions and approach because you’re afraid I’ll quit. You asked me to gather my resolve before, but you didn’t actually think I could do it. So let me tell you again, since you didn’t take me seriously before. I have many things I want to do that I thought I’d never get to. Now that I have the chance to do them, I won’t flinch. Through thick and thin, I will become your sword of punishment, for that brings me closer to my own goals as well. This is my resolve, if you can’t trust me, then at least trust it.” He stared at her for a moment before closing his eyes and sinking down into the water.
Marina stared at him for a little while before getting up. “The medicinal effects of the bath will finish in ten or so minutes, after that you can do as you wish for two hours until I get the next meal ready.”
She walked out while mentally reviewing what ingredients she had. Since they’d be doing the intensive training more often than she anticipated, she’d need to order more ingredients from Tai. She’d also have to factor in any lingering qi from the previous meal into what she made next. She’d have to redraw the whole schedule for the month, and probably spend the rest of her savings, yet there was a shadow of a smile on her lips as she left.
As soon as he confirmed she left his body started trembling uncontrollably as he recalled the events of the training. He’d really almost died there, if he’d given up at any point he’d be toast. Of course he was scared to do it again. However, that wasn’t why he was shivering.
He brought his shaking hand to his face to try and contain the uncontrollable grin on his face. It was dangerous, it was painful, and it was scary, but it was also the most exciting and meaningful moment in his life.
It was easily one of the most painful moments in his life, perhaps only topped by when Marina bit him that night, but he was also able to feel himself growing stronger with literally every punch.
Raul had long learned that pain wasn’t hell, suffering pointlessly was. For years he’d made countless sacrifices and endured extreme pain without improving a single iota.
Compared to that despair, today was heaven. “Maybe I am crazy.” He muttered into the empty room. But even that possibility couldn’t diminish the smile on his face.
