Mikoto and Kushina were returning to Konoha after a long training session.
“Well, Mikoto, next time you'll have to go all out.”
“I was holding myself back so as not to hurt you too much, Kushina,” Mikoto said with a little wink.
Both eventually arrived in Konoha. The two guards rushed towards them, visibly worried, ready to talk to them, but they were jostled by an orange fury that seemed to obviously want to impose his place.
“Hey, mom!
“Hi, Naruto! So, how was school?”
“Oh yeah, it was so much fun! We had our first ninja mission,” the young Naruto said, puffing out his chest, as he was joined by a dark-haired boy.
“Sasuke,” Mikoto then said with a smile. “So, how did this first mission go?”
“Nothing exciting” Sasuke replied, visibly disappointed.
“Come on, you'll have a better one next time.”
Mikoto and Kushina gave each other an amused look. To give them some experience, the academy asks the students to accompany a volunteer ninja for half a day on a short mission of rank D or C. Naruto and Sasuke, therefore, accompanied Itachi on a mission consisting in warding off the threat of a giant wild boar on a small farm. Although such a mission presents a real danger for apprentice ninjas, the fact of being accompanied by an experienced ninja considerably reduces the risk and nevertheless allows them to get an idea of the job.
“This afternoon,” Sasuke continued, a smile on his lips, “We received our report card.”
“Oh!” Mikoto exclaimed, very curious, taking the scroll Sasuke handed her.
Mikoto went through all of his grades. Kushina glanced discreetly over her shoulder.
“First everywhere... You are my son,” Mikoto said, a big smile on her lips.
Sasuke couldn't hide the look of pride on his face.
“And you?” Kushina suddenly asked Naruto.
“What about me?” Her son grumbled.
“Your report card!” Kushina asked impatiently.
Naruto rummaged in his bag and searched for a long time among the papers in there. He finally pulled out a half-torn, crumpled scroll on which was a drawing of a strange creature.
Mikoto, seeing that Kushina seemed on the verge of exploding, slowly approached and glanced at Naruto's drawing.
“What a pretty drawing,” she muttered, amused. “Is it a toad?”
“Not even close!” Naruto exclaimed. “It's… our teacher! Hahaha!”
He suddenly yelled in pain as his mother tugged at his ear.
“How can you make fun of your teacher?” Kushina reprimanded, opening the scroll.
“What are these grades?!”
“It’s fine. It’s nothing to be angry about.” Naruto replied.
“How dare you? Kushina said, blushing more and more.
Mikoto put a hand on her shoulder.
"Look on the bright side, Kushina," she whispered to him with a small smile. “He inherited your ranking in Ninjutsu.”
Kushina scowled but seemed to calm down.
“You're lucky to have your son by your side,” she whispered back. “Otherwise, I would make you regret it!”
Mikoto couldn't hold back a small amused laugh but Kushina, although calmed down, couldn't soften her features in front of Naruto.
“Good,” he said, his hands behind his head. “It's getting late, and I have to go get some ramen.”
“Ichiraku will wait,” Kushina growled. “Tonight, you eat at home, and we'll show your grades to your father!”
And in the evening...
“In your room,” Minato said without looking at the report card.
“But... Dad I...”
The look his father gave him silenced Naruto and, with his head bowed, he obeyed without another word.
“What authority!” Kushina exclaimed. “But maybe you went a bit too far?”
"Did you have a good day, otherwise?" Kushina asked.
Minato raised his eyebrows.
“Not really, and you?”
Kushina noticed that Minato didn't seem to be in a good mood.
“Ah… Me yes. I went on a walk with Mikoto.”

“Where did you go?” Minato immediately asked.
"Oh... Uh... Not far," Kushina replied, evasively.
Minato closed his eyes.
“You said you had a bad day... “ Kushina began shyly.
“Kushina, how long have you been lying to me?” Minato suddenly said, raising his voice for the first time.
“What?”
Kushina briefly met Minato's gaze and immediately looked down. She had understood.
“Listen, Minato…”
“Every time I'm away, you leave the village with Mikoto.”
“Better that than with another man,” Kushina said in a small voice, trying to relax the atmosphere.
But it seemed to have the opposite effect.
“Tell me the truth!”
Kushina had never seen Minato like this. She knew it was no longer a question of her lying to him.
“With Mikoto, we went out to control the power of Kyubi,” Kushina quickly said, as if that would lighten the weight of her words.
Minato closed his eyes and dropped his head into his hands.
“I knew it…”
Kushina did not answer.
“It's too dangerous, Kushina!”
“I knew you would say that,” Kushina suddenly got angry, tears in her eyes. “That's why I hid it from you!”
The door to Naruto's room opened abruptly, letting the young boy out.
“Stop screaming! Dad, Mom, I apologize for my grades! I will work hard to learn Ninjutsu, I promise! And I... I will become a great Hokage, like Dad, and a kind person, like Mom! So... Please, please just let me eat Ramen to get my strength back.”
Minato and Kushina looked at each other. Both were thinking the same thing. They didn’t want their son to be affected by their quarrel. The atmosphere suddenly relaxed since Naruto's abrupt interruption.
Minato put a hand in his son’s hair.
“It's okay, my son. Your mother and I have to talk.”
Naruto felt a gust of wind, then something in his pocket. Kushina frowned as Naruto exited the house happily.
“Did you think shoving money into his pocket at full speed would go unnoticed?” Kushina asked, half annoyed, half amused. “I know you, Minato…”
Minato replied with an embarrassed smile.
“Minato, I... I don't want us to fight, ya know!”
“Neither do I. Neither does Naruto, apparently…”
“But understand me! It's been over seven years, but I still remember the words of the Sandaime... Minato, I want to protect you both!”
Minato took her in his arms.
“I know... Kushina, I just want you to stop lying to me, and trust me.”
Kushina suddenly started crying.
"Then trust me too!" she let out, in tears. “Minato, I don't want to lose you! I must be strong enough!”
Minato suddenly stood up, turning his back on Kushina.
“As Yondaime Hokage, it is my duty to defend this village and its inhabitants. Don't worry, Kushina, you're not the only one looking to get stronger.”
Kushina opened her eyes wide, almost intimidated.
Naruto was running towards Ichiraku's house. But he felt someone following him. He suddenly stopped.
“Who is there?” He yelled.
There was a few rustling of leaves, then footsteps approaching. A hooded individual appeared.
"Follow me," he simply said.
And Naruto obeyed his command.
