Hiashi then got up and came back with some tea. He poured some to Mikoto before serving himself.

“You can activate your Sharingan if you want to make sure that your drink is not poisoned.”

Mikoto didn't understand the purpose of his remark.

“No, I trust you, Hiashi.”

“Well, I didn’t make the tea. So let’s make sure just in case… Byakugan!”

“It's good, it’s not poisoned. But you should be more suspicious.”

Mikoto raised her eyebrows.

“Should I remind you that an individual tried to kill your youngest son?”

“I know, thank you,” Mikoto replied coldly.

“I doubt it was over a quarrel at the Academy.”

“I doubt it too.”

“His attacker had the Byakugan.”

“Yes.”

“Do you think my clan is responsible?”

The question took Mikoto off guard.

“I see that you are very calm about the situation,” Mikoto said.

“And you, you seem to let your emotions guide you,” Hiashi replied. “But you didn't answer my question.”

“I don't know,” Mikoto replied. “But I don't think so.”

“Why?”

“You wouldn't have approved such action. You're not like that, Hiashi... And stop staring at me with those eyes, you know it bothers me.”

“Then activate yours.”
“Why?”

“To see if I am lying, just as I’m currently doing by monitoring the flow of your chakra.”

Mikoto frowned, annoyed.

“The Sharingan is not made for that, and you know it. I can see chakra but not analyze it as you can.”

“But you can watch my movements. If my mind wants to deceive you, my body will betray me, and your eyes will see it.”

“You’re being ridiculous, Hiashi!” Mikoto said, annoyed.

“It's important,” Hiashi said.

Mikoto closed her eyes and sighed.

“Well, if that’s what you really want…”

She opened her eyes, revealing her red pupils.

“Happy now?”

“Good.”

In the Hokage office, the discussion had evolved somewhat.

“If I understood correctly,” Danzo summed up in a calm voice, “the Uchihas captured the young Hyuga by simple revenge?”

“Among other things,” Hiruzen confirmed. “But Itachi heard more. The reason isn’t just that…”

He paused for a moment.

“The Uchiha clan wants the Hyugas to leave Konoha.”

“What?!” Minato asked, shocked.

Manda, still trapped in the mud, had managed to bite one of Gamabunta’s legs. The latter struggled vainly, trying to reach the snake with his sword, but all he cut down were trees.

In the village, the battle raging outside alerted the locals. If the sounds could be heard from afar, very few could see what it was.

Only the individuals at the edge of the village could have a precise idea of what was going on. But they were only a few because they were isolated. There was one clan in particular, that the village seemed to no longer accept... the Uchiha clan.

"What are we doing, Shisui?" One of the police members asked. “Should we intervene?”

"It's about the safety of the village," Shisui replied.

“Could it be a Hyuga trap?”

Further into the heart of the village, the only others who could understand what was going on were the few individuals whose keen eyes saw beyond the buildings. Only one other clan had been alerted to the possible threat...

In Hiashi's living room, Mikoto and Hiashi were suddenly interrupted by the arrival of another Hyuga.

“Lord Hiashi!” The latter called, out of breath. “A fight is raging on the outskirts of the village…”

He stopped himself, looking at Mikoto with a wary gaze. Hiashi turned his head towards the distant sounds.

“What's going on, Hiashi?” Mikoto then asked.

“Nothing,” he replied.

But Mikoto’s eyes didn't miss a slight movement of Hiashi's foot, barely perceptible.
Although he was one of the people with the most self-control that Mikoto knew, Hiashi hadn't been able to deceive the Sharingan. His gesture, as small as it was, had betrayed him.

“Tell the truth.”

Hiashi turned his head towards her, understanding that lying would be useless.

“Jiraiya-sensei is fighting Orochimaru.”

Mikoto deactivated her Sharingan, her eyes wide with a worried expression. Hiashi got up and, with a brisk step, headed for the door.

“What are you doing?” Mikoto asked.

“I will eradicate this threat. My clan can see what others can only hear. It is our responsibility... and our honor.”

As he left, many clan members joined him.

“Because the Hyuga are the strongest in Konoha.”

With these words, all the Hyugas present ran off. Mikoto thought back to the fight between Kushina and Orochimaru. If her friend had been able to stand up to the Sannin, so could she.

"No one will hurt Jiraiya-sensei!" She said as she took off, following the Hyugas.

Arriving at the entrance of the village, she saw another group of shinobis who were also running towards the exit. She recognized Shisui Uchiha leading the group.

All of them, Uchihas and Hyugas, suddenly stopped facing each other.

“If the Uchihas and the Hyugas were to fight, the whole village would be plunged into a civil war,” Danzo said.

The two advisers nodded in agreement.

“Therefore, the village must choose its side,” Danzo concluded.

“Its side?” Minato exclaimed. “The village is neutral, Danzo. Choosing a side is out of the question. The role of the village is to ease tensions, not encourage them to provoke a massacre.”

Hiruzen, much to Minato's relief, nodded as well.

“Furthermore,” the Yondaime continued, “a civil war will leave us exposed to the other nations. We must avoid it. The loss of the village's military power and its instability during a civil war will provide a golden opportunity for other nations to attack us.”

“Minato is right,” Hiruzen agreed. “The tensions need to be eased.”

Jiraiya was stuck, trapped in the grasp of Orochimaru's snake hold. Unable to move, he could no longer wave hand seals to perform a jutsu.

“Looks like I'm still superior to you, Jiraiya,” Orochimaru whispered.

Kakashi tried to get up but to no avail. Neji paid him no attention, his gaze fixed on Orochimaru.

“Lord Orochimaru, reinforcements are at the entrance of the village.”

“Watch them and keep me informed,” Orochimaru replied.

“Well... They stopped.”

Uchihas and Hyugas faced each other, motionless and silent. Hiashi came forward.

“Uchiha people, let us pass. Outside is the nukenin which…”

“We know that,” Shisui interrupted. “We came to arrest him. Let us deal with this problem; we are the Konoha Police.”

Hiashi remained silent.

"And who says we can trust you?" A young Hyuga asked.

Hiashi turned to him, immediately shutting him up with his gaze.

"Well, use your eyes to see what's going on," Shisui simply replied. “You will see if we’re trustworthy.”

Hiashi took a step forward.

“Did you hear Shisui?” Inabi called out, activating her Sharingan. “Get out of our way! We don't want you here, flaunting your manners and looking like heroes... Let the police do its job!”

Hiashi sighed, then deactivated his Byakugan. His clan, behind him, remained just as calm, in the face of increasingly agitated Uchihas.

"You've done enough," Yashiro whispered.

“What do you mean?” Hiashi asked politely.

“Assaulting children... is a crime!” He spat. “This village was created to prevent that, but you Hyugas believe yourself to be above the law!”

Mikoto then joined the group.

“What happened to Sasuke is… regrettable,” Hiashi whispered. “I'm as revolted as you are by what happened to him.”

“Yeah right, tell your daughter that,” Tekka muttered.

The reactions were immediate. Shisui turned sharply to him. Mikoto opened her eyes wide.
Hiashi activated his Byakugan and turned his head towards the Konoha Police.

“Hinata…”

Kakashi painfully rummaged in his bag, until he found a kunai.

"Even though his eyes can see me, his attention is elsewhere... I must take this chance!"

Something suddenly caught the young Hyuga's attention. It was not the kunai.

“Lord Orochimaru!” He yelled. Be careful! He... There is a powerful chakra in him!”

Orochimaru, who no longer cared for Jiraiya after his capture, realized too late that the latter had completely changed his form.

“Orochimaru... You still underestimate me!” Jiraiya said, pulling away from Orochimaru's snake hold with disconcerting ease.

Displaying features of a toad on his body, Jiraiya had gone into Sage Mode.
