“Kushina, why didn't you say anything?” Kyubi asked.
“What are you talking about, you stinky fox?”
“You know very well what I'm talking about... After all, you may be a pitiful human, but you belong to the Uzumaki clan.”
“Shut up! If you keep provoking me, it will end badly for you! You'll end up with your tails between your legs, stinky fox! So go away, Kyubi!”
“Be careful, Kushina…”
“Kushina... Kushina, are you all right?”
Kushina shook her head as if to get rid of bad thoughts. She then realized she was lying in Minato's arms, who was looking at her with a worried look. She couldn't help but smile as she thought back to the first time she had found herself like this. She had been kidnapped by ninjas from an enemy village and had been saved by the one who would later become the Yondaime Hokage, her husband and the father of her child.
“Yes, don’t worry.”
“You must have fainted. You may be strong, but childbirth requires a lot of energy.”
She slapped his head.
“You may be super wise and strong, but you've never given birth. And you'll never give birth so what do you know?”
“That hurts! You’re quite upset tonight.”
“Upset?” Kushina snapped, tears glistening in her eyes. “In the space of a few minutes, I gave birth, I almost died, I almost lost my son, I learned from Hiruzen that I almost lost you too, and then... You notice that I’m upset?”
Minato didn't answer and took her in his arms gently, letting her liberate all these accumulated emotions. Finally calming down, Kushina, still in tears, added softly:
“Also, I used almost all my chakra to protect Naruto in my absence. I surrounded his bed with several layers of chakra chains which I connected to an invisibility seal. I also surrounded the house with a detection barrier connected to my chakra using an Uzumaki seal derived from the Hiraishin, alerting me immediately when a foreign chakra crosses it. With that, even if all the Bijus came at the same time to attack Naruto, they would have a hard time.”
She caught her breath. Minato wiped her tears away smiling.
“Well, I still hope the Bijus don't decide on a whim to attack my son at the same time. Because it would be a shame... for them.”
He gave her a big playful smile, puffing out his chest in his Hokage outfit. Kushina immediately remembered that same smile she had seen the first time he said he wanted to become Hokage. She had believed in him back then and still had the same feeling now.
The couple ultimately made it home, overriding Kushina's security measures, and reunited with Naruto, whom no Biju had decided to attack. The night had been long. They were finally able to get some rest.
The night was however short-lived for Minato who was soon awakened by someone knocking at the door. He got up to open it. He saw a man in sunglasses with a tattoo on his right cheek, standing behind the last person Minato wanted to meet that night.
“Yondaime Hokage, we need to talk.”
“Danzo... Is it really urgent? Kushina has just given birth, and we had a long night.”
“Indeed! We have to talk about this long night. And yes, I know everything.”
Minato was surprised by this response. How could he know? The Sandaime would never have told him. Minato knew the old Hokage too well to know that such information would stay between them. Telling Danzo would be the last thing Hiruzen would have done.
"Let's go out," Danzo said.
Minato followed the two men, taking care to close the door slowly. Danzo went to sit on a bench, under the light of a street lamp. Minato sat down beside him.
Both remained silent for a few moments before Danzo broke the silence.
"About that man with the Sharingan..."
He paused slightly. Minato knew very well where he was coming from, but let him continue.
“I don't think it's Madara. This assumption seems too far-fetched. There's no need to look so far to find other possessors of this eye.”
He remained silent a little longer this time, seeming to wait for a reaction from Minato. As the Yondaime said nothing, he continued again.
“This man had a Sharingan and was masked. What's the point if he was Madara Uchiha?”
“Maybe because he's supposed to be dead for decades?” Minato said sarcastically.
Although always patient and respectful, Minato had always found it difficult to put up with Danzo.
“Certainly. But don't you think that an Uchiha from the village would have a reason to hide his face if he has to do such a crime in front of the Hokage in person?”
“Get to the point. Do you suspect anyone in particular?”
“I suspect the entire Uchiha clan. Besides, where are they tonight? I haven't seen anyone from the clan.”
“So you think the entire Uchiha clan is plotting against Konoha, is that it?”
"It wouldn't be the first time..."
Minato frowned. He didn't like Danzo's reasoning.
“Anyway, this masked man was alone. And he was strong, looking ready to face me if his plan succeeded.”
“You should keep an eye on Fugaku Uchiha.”
“Fugaku? He may have a character that bothers you, but what you’re saying is pure defamation.”
“We're talking about an Uchiha, Minato.”
The Hokage stood up.
“By treating them like outcasts like you do all the time, they will end up becoming one. You know, Danzo, the Uchihas are not monsters.”
He thought back with sadness to Obito Uchiha. Danzo stood up in turn, furious.
“I see Hiruzen has already stuffed your head with his fine theories.”
He then gave him a smile that looked more like a grimace.
“Anyway... Say hello to Kushina... and Naruto…”
Minato understood the message perfectly. A fraction of a second later, he pressed his kunai against Danzo's throat.
“If you dare to threaten my family again... or even touch a hair of Kushina or Naruto, I will kill you.”

The Root ninja was going to intervene to protect his master but changed his mind obeying a gesture from Danzo. The latter remained impassive but could not hide a terrified look. Although powerful, he was well aware that he had gone too far. The burst of anger from the Yondaime was all the more frightening as he was usually a ninja with exceptional composure.
“Yondaime Hokage, please stop.”
This request did not come from Danzo, but from a child judging by the voice. The silhouette of a boy loomed in the darkness, moving forward until he was visible in the light.
“Itachi Uchiha?”
Minato regained his composure and approached the child, seeing that he was holding a baby in his arms.
“You should be home by now.”
Danzo spat furiously on the ground, and his man and he took advantage of the situation to move away quickly. Minato ignored them.
“Sasuke couldn't sleep, so I decided to take him for a walk.”
“And your parents, they let you do it?!” Minato wondered, looking at the young Sasuke who now seemed to be sleeping soundly.
“They're not here tonight.”
Minato frowned. He was glad that Danzo hadn't heard anything but still had questions about their absence. He looked at Itachi and sighed.
“Well, I'm not going to leave two children unattended all night.”
“Don't worry, I'll protect Sasuke.”
“I do not doubt it for a second, but in the meantime, you will both sleep at home.”
Minato led them to his house. He opened the door as discreetly as possible and found himself face to face with Kushina, whose head suggested that she had had a rather brutal awakening. Naruto’s sobs could be heard behind her. Itachi immediately covered Sasuke's ears, in vain. he had woken up, and seemed to be looking for the origin of the noise, his gaze intrigued.
Minato settled the baby Uchiha and his big brother into their bed, leaving Kushina on the sofa.
“And you're going to sleep on the floor?!” His wife asked.
“Do not worry about me. It's especially you that I pity because now it's not one but two babies who will prevent you from sleeping. And don't make that face, you'll scare them!”
With a big smirk, but knowing that she would make him pay for his mockery, Minato bade her good night and walked out of the house to a fairly large plaza.
What a mess, Minato thought, biting his finger until it bled. What a night!
“Kuchiyose No Jutsu!”
Gamabunta, the giant toad of Mount Myoboku, appeared, half asleep.
“Minato? I just went to bed... I hope it's important…”
“Sorry, Gamabunta,” the young man said, climbing on his back. “Keep sleeping, act as if nothing happened.”
Minato then lay down on the giant toad's back and tried to fall asleep on it. However, he did not succeed, too preoccupied with the events he had experienced in recent hours.
Was he too weak? He who was considered a genius might not have been able to save his wife and son... If he had failed, he would never have forgiven himself. He would not hesitate to sacrifice himself for them.
He remained like that for several minutes, thinking of a thousand things at the same time. However, he was interrupted by a nearby presence. Looking over the giant toad's eye, he realized that little Itachi was having as much trouble sleeping as him.
“Itachi, it seems like you’re not sleepy either.”
Gamabunta opened one eye and glared at the Uchiha kid. The latter seemed in no way impressed and ignored the giant toad.
“I think about the war. I don't want Sasuke to go through it.”
Minato was surprised at his response. The child was about 5 years old, but his words were those of someone much more mature.
“Gamabunta, please put this boy on your back.”
"What are you playing at, Minato?" Gamabunta said, annoyed. “Why would you want this juvenile biped on my back?”
Itachi didn't listen to Gamabunta's remarks and mounted him without apparent difficulty.
“Hey! Get out of there, you brat! Do you know who I am? I am the great Gamabunta of Mount Myob…
“Gamabunta,” Minato interrupted. “Thanks.”
The toad growled in displeasure but no longer tried to rebel. Despite having an ego as big as itself, Gamabunta greatly respected Minato.
Itachi and the Hokage sat on Gamabunta's head. From this height, they towered over most Konoha homes. Itachi, staring at the horizon, broke the silence.
“I don't ever want to experience war again. Yondaime Hokage, why do people go to war?”
“It's complicated... I think people have a hard time understanding each other.”
"Then there shouldn't be any differences between people, so everyone would understand each other," Itachi concluded, who, surprisingly, seemed to have grasped the meaning of Minato's words.
"But without differences, what are we left with?"
Itachi said nothing, sadly lowering his head.
“I'm afraid for Sasuke.”
“You love your brother very much.”
“Yes.”
Itachi looked up at Minato, a tear rolling down the boy’s cheek and a smile forming on his face.
“I hope that Naruto and Sasuke will become friends.”
Minato ran a hand through Itachi's hair with a big smile.
“I am sure they will.”
Dawn was approaching. Konoha's longest night was finally over.
