Rare Bird Watching

At the far end of the central temple, at the end of the lounge where the priests were resting, Falk was sulking alone.

He leaned back on the sofa and drooped his head forward. On the table is a paper bag from a jewelry store.

He was wondering what he should do with this set of accessories he had bought.

He wanted to give it to Alme, but if I did, it would interfere with Alme’s search for a relationship. It’s a hopelessly selfish and heavy, insect repellent item.

Falk held his head and let out a deep sigh for the umpteenth time already.

The priests in the lounge were watching the situation from afar. They kept their voices low, whispering to each other wondering what the hell was going on.

It is a state of birdwatching, in which rare birds are surrounded and observed.

Eventually, the priests spotted the paper bag on the table and began to ponder this and that.

“Perhaps, Mr. Raltoze was dumped by someone? The paper bag on the table is from a jewelry store along main street…so maybe he tried to give someone a ring and got turned down.”

“No, no, it’s not like that. How could Shirotaka be rejected?”

“Then, is he worried about wanting to give it to someone but he can’t?”

“If that’s the case, then what kind of partner would make Mr. Shirotaka worry?”

As the contemplation deepened, the murmur of hushed voices from the surrounding priests increased.

A man as young as Shirotaka, who has risen to the rank of a high priest, is limited when it comes to the people he has to worry about.

Is it a partner with a higher status that is just out of reach? Or is it a woman who already has a husband? Or there is also the possibility that there is too much of an age difference…

The apprentice priest Kyle also let out a whisper as he watched Shirotaka from afar, a great senior who seemed to be in great trouble.

He talked to Lou, who was watching next to him

“Master Falkert looks so worried…is his partner a princess somewhere?”

“A princess is a princess, but she’s probably an ice cream princess. It would be a problem if the atmosphere in the lounge was darkened like this, so let me call out to him.”

With a wry smile, Lou walked over to Falk who was in the process of sinking into the sofa.

Lou sat down and talked to him casually.

“Hey, Falk. What happened, huh? Did you fight again?”

“From now on, please call me bug instead of Falk…”

“Well, that is serious.”

It seems that he is deeply depressed. This is where Lou wants to somehow cast healing magic on his heart.

Is it the nature of priests to want to heal wounds, or is it simply parental affection?

Plopping a hand on his shoulder, Falk began to tell him what had happened.

“I ended up buying jewelry in order to get rid of the bugs that would come to Miss Alme… I’m trying to get in the way of Miss Alme’s search for a relationship. I’m trying to ruin people’s lives… I’m the worst friend…”

“I see.” Lou nodded.

He seems to be conflicted between wanting to be selfish and thinking about his friend’s future.

Lou thought it would be nice if he just handed it over without worrying so deeply, but this man is an unexpected coward. Just like the falcon is a surprisingly sensitive and timid creature.

It is my duty to appease such a falcon and let it fly freely.

Lou decided to push Falk off of his back. He grinned and gave him a hint that will help him solve his problems.

“Your feelings are certainly a bit immoral and heavy as a friend. But if it’s not friendship, but a different relationship, wouldn’t the weight of that feeling not be a problem?”

“A different relationship, huh…?”

When Lou gave him a hint, Falk raised his head. The light returned to his sunken golden eyes.

A different relationship is a “relationship beyond friends”. Once someone has that kind of relationship, they can give gifts with impunity, and they won’t have any problems getting rid of bugs.

Falk looked thoughtful as he pensively mouthed his answer.

“I see, if it’s a ‘clerk and customer’ relationship…the problem may disappear.”

“Yes…?”

Lou got an answer different from what he had expected, and a dull-witted voice came out.

As Falk tilted his head, he began blabbing away the answers he seemed to have derived.

“Certainly, it seems that there is such a culture in the hostess liquor shop in which customers that have a heavy feeling towards the staff, pay tribute with trinkets and such. If it’s a relationship between ‘a clerk and an admiring customer’, expensive items can be easily given, and I don’t think there’s a problem even if I have a somewhat unhealthy heavy feeling unilaterally. Under such a culture, on the contrary, it is healthy…”

“Idiot!”

“Ouch…”

Before he could finish listening to it all, Lou hit Falk on the head.

Indeed, even though he should be smart, why do his thoughts fly in a strange direction? …that’s the interesting thing about this guy.

When Lou scolded him with a scowl, Falk was pouting.

However, perhaps because Falk had obtained a tentative answer, the darkness Lou had felt earlier was gone. At any rate, he seemed to have recovered, so, well, let’s call it even this time.

Falk straightened his expression and said in a crisp voice.

“I will give this accessory when the occasion arises!”

“Please don’t explain the story of the liquor shop.”

Lou patted him on the back as always with the feeling of cheering him on.

Brightness returned to the dreary Falk.

But, the people who were watching the exchange between the two from afar were still confused. The whispering became even more exciting.

“Master Gray just hit Mr. Raltoze on the head…!”

“I wonder if the partner that Mr. Shirotaka is thinking of is the kind of partner that would make the High Priest angry.”

“In that case, it’s a royal relationship or a saint…”

As the priests began to ponder again, Kyle muttered to himself.

“An ice cream princess…oh, could it be?”

Kyle quietly swallowed the answer that came to mind. If he revealed it here and now, it would likely cause another uproar.

Feeling a little superior to the answers that the others had arrived at, Kyle turned his attention to Falk.

He didn’t know what Falk bought at the jewelry store, but he hoped that he was able to give it to the recipient safely.

Kyle would like to wholeheartedly support the love lives of his esteemed seniors.

That’s what he thought at the time.

Later on, Kyle was told by this respected senior Falk, that he had ‘presented a tribute to the clerk’.

Was he infatuated with a woman at the liquor shop…? misunderstanding it, it will be some time before it all collapses.
