WHEN MONDAY MORNING CAME AROUND, LAIA WAS ALREADY AWAKE AT JUST FIVE IN THE MORNING. The girl then lazily made her way to the kitchen and prepared coffee for her to drink.
Knowing that her mother still wasn't awake this early, she opted to not make one for the older woman as well for the coffee will just end up getting cold.
The girl sat on the couch as she turned the television on. She wasn't really much into watching the news but she had no other choice as they didn't have cable so it will be the news or nothing.
She continues watching the news for a while until she heard the door of her mother's bedroom open. Laia turns to her mother and waves. "Good morning mom,"
Her mother walks towards her and kisses her on the forehead. "Good morning, Laia," The older woman then proceeded to go to the kitchen to start cooking their breakfast. "Do you want eggs or bacon?"
"Eggs all the way mom," Laia replies, turning away from the television and opting to watch her mother start cracking eggs and placing it in a pan.
The older woman hummed to herself as she cooked, and Laia continues to watch her mother, completely neglecting the television.
However, she quickly realizes that not watching television while it was still turned on would lead to their electricity bill being more huge, so Laia turned it off.
Her mother finished cooking after fifteen minutes and served it to Laia, who had already toasted a few slices of bread when her mother was placing the eggs on another plate.
The two then sat on the table and her mother was the first to start a conversation as she bites into her toast with an egg inside. "So, how was your visit to the park last Saturday?"
Laia choked on her toast, coughing violently. Her mother was quick to stand up from her chair and started rubbing her daughter's back to ease her discomfort. Fortunately, Laia recovered quickly after drinking a whole glass of water.
"Laia! I told you not to eat so quickly all the time," It wasn't that I ate quickly mom, Laia wanted to say. It's because of your question! "Look what happened!"
"Yeah, sorry," Laia opts to drink water again. She then eats another toast, this time she chews it slowly. "Anyway, it was alright. I played with a dog and talked with a few people."
Sure. Played with a dog and talked with a few people. Definitely believable. Laia fought the urge to facepalm at how unbelievable her excuse was.
And of course, because she is Laia's mother, the older woman looked at her child with skepticism on her face. "You do realize you're bad at lying right?"
Laia grins sheepishly. "Okay, I visited a coffee shop near my university," I also applied for a part-time job but I won't be telling you that. "I talked with the barista who was my acquaintance for a while. He never ran out of topics to converse about so it took quite a while,"
A half-truth at least. Hopefully, her mother would not pry anymore.
Luckily for the girl, the older woman did not pry further. Instead, she only cast a skeptical look at her child but continued eating her second toast.
The rest of their breakfast was in silence. Laia then made her way to the bathroom to take a bath as she still had a lot of time left before classes started at nine. She can opt for a bubble bath at least after the studying she did last night.
The girl lets out a delighted sigh as she relaxed amidst all the bubbles. She even brought her rubber ducky along and played with it for a bit.
Her alarm then goes off after a while, signifying that it was already seven-thirty. The girl then groans in disappointment at how time flew so quickly but stands up from the bathtub anyway and started wearing her uniform after drying herself up.
A few moments later she emerged from the bathroom and quickly bid her goodbyes to her mother. She then rides her bike, greeting some of the vendors she knew on the way, and reached her university at around eight-thirty.
Laia was elated upon realizing that she still had time to go to the library and study. She immediately made her way to the library and upon reaching it, opted to go the farthest table away from everyone else who didn't really study.
Not that Laia minds, it's honestly the least of her concerns.
The girl sits down on the table and grabs a few of her textbooks from inside her bag and her notebooks as well. She starts to write notes about the various topics that will probably be discussed today, starting with her favorite subject, Mathematics.
She continues writing notes until her phone rang. It was Brie.
Laia answers it. "Hey? What's up?"
[Hiya! Jake and I might be a little bit late-- Ugh! Ouch, you're biting way too hard!]
"Brie, I'm seriously not in the mood to listen to you and your boyfriend having sex or whatever you are currently doing so please spare me the details."
Laia watched to see if anyone overheard what she just said. Fortunately, nobody did as everyone was either too far to hear or preoccupied by something else.
[Oopsie! Jake, I told you to stop for a while, I'm talking to Laia!]
Brie's line went silent for a while and the girl speaks again.
[Sorry about that. Jake's a bit, uhm, impatient. Anyway, can you please tell Ma'am Anne that we both have something important to do and we will probably be coming in during the third or fourth period?]
Sure. Something important.
Brie rolls her eyes. "Yeah, sure. Just ready an excuse note or something."
[Is that really needed?! So annoying. I wish I can just drop out already! And no Jakey, I'm not angry at you.]
The girl had to listen to her friend flirt with her boyfriend instead of studying for a few minutes. She knew she would be losing her temper sooner or later, so she decided to interrupt the two.
"If you don't have anything else to say, I'll be going to the flag ceremony," Right on time with her excuse to drop the call, the school bell rang. "School bell's ringing. See you if you do decide to go to school. Bye.
Not even waiting for her friend's response, Laia drops the call and pocketed her phone. She then puts back her textbooks and notebooks inside her bag and made her way to the flag ceremony.
Just like any other flag ceremony, even with Brie present, Laia still opted to stay behind everyone else to sneakily read study materials that she downloaded on her phone. You can never be wrong with studying additional reading materials!
Nobody really minded that Laia was reading (not so secretly) on her phone. Just like in the library, everyone was preoccupied with their own issues whether it be somebody calling their friend or checking their Instagram followers.
Fun fact, Laia doesn't have an Instagram account. It may or may not be because she doesn't know how to do boomerangs.
And again, much to everyone else's delight except Laia's, the asshat steps out of his car and walks towards their class as if he wasn't the same asshat who was trance-like last week.
Laia even overheard how the asshat started flirting and complimenting some girls about their hairstyles or their earrings or something else on the lane beside Laia's. And the responses of the girls who were just, well, flirtatious as well.
And since the asshat just can't let Laia take a break, he saunters to where she was currently standing and had the audacity to grin at her in his usual way.
Aka mocking and narcissistic and the-looking-down-at-you-because-you-have-no-money kind of grin.
Laia fought the urge to roll her eyes. She knew that if she did rumors would again circulate that Laia didn't appreciate having a competitor to her top spot or just that Laia hated the asshat.
And she did. Of course, she did, but nobody should know that except that one stray cat that Laia talks to whenever she happens to spot it as she goes home.
"Lopez, are you seriously reading source materials this early in the morning? God, you should take a break!"
To other people the way the asshat talked was casual and probably symphathetic. But to Laia, it was almost as if he mocked her openly for studying instead of checking her social media accounts like the rest of her classmates.
She smiles at him instead of hitting him straight in the face with her phone. "Yeah, I am. You know, so I won't get humiliated for doing an essay of a completely different topic,"
She heard some of her classmates voice their gasps and outbursts of surprise at her response. Nevertheless, Laia couldn't help herself from having the desire to continue the argument if the asshat would.
And since Laia was still lucky, the asshat was just about to open his mouth and say something when the university's hymn started playing.
Laia snorts. She was about to watch in glee to see if the asshat walks towards the front, as he always does whenever flag ceremony comes around, but to her disappointment and infuriation, the asshat just had to stand behind her.
And had the audacity to whisper, "Looks like this will be my spot during flag ceremonies starting today."
Laia decided that she's definitely run out of luck.
