There was no other reason for only three people to escape from the turmoil.

‘They must be running toward Elena by now, then.’ Realizing this, Gareth spit out curse words, punching the fragile walls of the secret passageway. ‘Elena is pregnant. All of this is too much for her to handle.’ He punched the wall once again. ‘I just hope her sisters will make it to her safely…’

Gareth and his men returned to the hall of the Townsend estate, where they could not smell anything but the stench of corpses.

“I just don’t understand why Logan would do something like this just before the war,” Giggs murmured to himself, tilting his head as if to show that he was confused. This was a place where Gareth had taken an oath to protect, and now that Logan had razed the estate, it meant Gareth and Logan were sworn enemies. It was indeed strange that Logan would tear down this place at a time like this, especially if he knew that he was going to become adversaries with the most notorious mercenary in the country before a war.

Gareth folded his arms across the chest and began to ponder. No matter how much he thought about it, this plan had not come from Logan. There was no reason to do such a thing unless the man had driven himself mad. At that moment, a name passed by his thoughts.

‘Lydia…’

Bitterness filled Gareth’s mouth when he realized that the cunning, red-haired woman had fooled him once again. Gareth’s eyes turned sharp at that instant. His eyes shone with determination as he gathered his men to give the next set of orders.

“Madam, this is Madel.”

“Come in,” Elena said as she put down the fabrics she was sewing. When Madel entered the room, Elena had no choice but to stand up from her chair as the woman was ghastly pale. “What’s the matter? Did a letter come from Gareth? Did something happen to him?”

“It’s not Lord Gareth, but William wishes to see you.”

“William? William from my home? Where is he right now?”

“He’s on his way to the castle.”

“Help me, Madel,” Elena requested, groaning from the cramps in her lower abdomen brought on by ominous presentiment that pervaded her thoughts. Her whole body became stiff as well, but Elena managed to descend to the hall on the first floor with Madel’s help, determined to meet William.

Not long after, William entered the hall through the large doors with the help of Gareth’s guards. He was drenched in blood.

“My lady…” William began sobbing after these two words, unable to overcome his grief. Watching him, Elena was overwhelmed with agony. Her heart pounded hard as if it was being hit by something. Instinctively, she could tell that her father had passed away. Another severe jolt of pain passed by her lower abdomen at that moment, causing her to plop down onto the cold floor.

“Madam!” Madel shouted as she rushed to Elena’s side to support her. “Everyone, help her up!” she ordered the maids around the hall.

“Wait, wait, Madel,” Elena groaned. She stared at William, distorting her expression as the terrible pain squeezed her lower torso. Crawling to his lady who was now on the floor, William continued to bawl and began to speak with his face to the ground. Elena’s face that had already been harshly twisted turned into a scowl as she listened to William. Logan had attacked the castle, and Rowena and Marina were held captive by a red-haired woman. Elena’s body began to tremble uncontrollably, and Madel hugged her fragile madam with all her might, feeling that her body was rapidly growing cold.

Madel roared, “Shut up, shut up! Don’t shock her anymore! Stop talking!”

Elena could not hear anything. Thinking that she might be stuck in a terrible nightmare, she shook her head violently to try to wake up. ‘William’s words are all lies. This is just a dream. It’s just a horrible nightmare.’ Elena felt something flow out of her at that moment, moistening her lower body. Her vision became blurred as she began to hear a ringing sound in her ears. “How… How… What have you all been doing… How…” she mumbled.

William remained silent, unable to answer. Realizing that he had lost his privilege to speak another word, he couldn’t take out what he had brought with him.

“William, tell me that these are all lies. Tell me, now!” Elena yelled, her shrill cry filling the hall.

“I’m sorry, Lady Elena…”

Everything turned black.
