Chapter 14: 14 Tainted Bear (2)

Enzo unsheathed his sword slowly.

He knew it would be foolish to try using his daggers or his bow to fight the bears. 

Bears are known to have thick fur and skin, so it would be much better to use a long ranged weapon with a long blade. 

This left Pepper at a disadvantage, but Enzo believed she would be able to hold her own, at least until he was able to come help her. 

The two bears were currently sitting on their hind legs licking their paws.

“Let’s sneak attack them.” Pepper suggested. 

Enzo thought it was a good idea so he followed her as she circled around the bears. 

There were a few trees within a few feet of the bears, so it should be easy to sneak attack them. 

It took a few minutes, as they didn’t want to alert the beasts, but they made it behind the trees nearby. 

Enzo focused on the bear he was going to attack.

[You have marked a Tainted Bear as your prey.]

He began to see the golden glow around the necks of the bears. 

It would be a hard place to reach, but they would need to if they wanted to kill them. 

Enzo assumed the neck must have been the softest spot on their thick skin, because even though the neck and heart is a weak spot for every beast or person, he had never seen those parts in the golden glow of his skill before. 

Enzo got Pepper’s attention without making any sounds and used hand signals to indicate that the neck was where she should aim.
Pepper was confused at first, but then remembered Enzo’s Insight skill and understood what he was trying to convey.

Pepper then unsheathed her daggers and held up three fingers to Enzo. 

She slowly put one finger down until all were down. 

Once Enzo saw the third finger go down he launched himself at the bear nearest him. 

The bears heard the two Fae as soon as they started to move, but it was too late to do anything. 

Enzo sliced his sword at the back of the beast. It was too tall on its hind legs for him to aim at the neck as the first strike.

A large gash appeared across the middle of the bear’s back and blood started rushing out. 

Pepper however, went in for the weak spot immediately.

She jumped up as high as she could and stabbed her daggers into the beast's neck violently. 

They were sucked into its neck up to the hilt. 

Her daggers took away half of the bear’s health in one go, but Enzo wasn’t paying attention enough to see it. 

He had his focus on his own opponent. 

The bear turned around right after Enzo finished his slash, and immediately tried to swipe at Enzo with its paw. 

Enzo jumped to the side and had to roll on the ground to fully avoid getting hit. 

He tried to stand up as quickly as possible, but the bear was faster. 

It sent another swipe of its paw towards Enzo and connected with his chest.

He was able to jump back just as the paw reached him, but it only served to help lessen the injury, not fully avoid it. 

However, Enzo did not falter because of the claw marks that formed across his chest. He stabbed his sword towards the eye on the left side of the bear’s face. 

The beast did not expect the Fae to just completely ignore its attack like that, so it suffered an injury of its own.

The bear was able to back up enough so the sword wouldn’t pierce its brain, but Enzo was still able to impale the monster’s eye. 

He quickly pulled the blade out of the bear’s eye socket and jumped back expecting retaliation. 

“Grahhhhhh!”

The beast was in too much pain to retaliate. 

It stood on its hind legs again and started pawing at the left eye in pain. 

Luckily for the bear, Enzo pulled the full eyeball out of its eye socket with his sword, so the beast didn’t injure itself even further by pawing at its eye. 

Unluckily for the bear, Enzo wasn’t going to just let this chance go away. 

The bear left its neck wide open. 

Enzo slashed his sword across the neck of the beast as fast as he could.

Enzo looked over to where Pepper was fighting her own bear. 

The bear was on the ground with 2 daggers sticking out of its head. 

“I think I underestimated you a little bit, sorry Pepper. Haha!”

Enzo fully expected Pepper to require his help to kill the beast. 

He knew she could at least distract it and cause damage to it, but he wasn’t confident in her ability to fully kill it, until now. 

“Hehe.” Pepper giggled and put her hand over her mouth in shyness. 

Enzo then looted the two bears. 

They were able to get a silver coin, a bear skin, and 3 bear claws each.

Enzo decided to continue putting his points into agility. He wasn’t having any issues with how much damage he was doing to his enemies at the moment, so there wasn’t any immediate need to upgrade his strength.

“I’ll just focus on something else next time.” He mumbled to himself.

He knew he would most likely leave his agility alone next time he received a few stat points. 

“Let’s go back to town. I have a quest I need to do and I think you can do the same quest too if you would like to follow me.” Enzo told Pepper. 

“Are you sure? We just started hunting.”
“Yeah. The person who gave me the quest told me to come back when I got a few silver coins and I could complete the quest, and it has a few hidden rewards.”
Pepper’s ears perked up at the mention of hidden rewards. 

Any gamer wouldn’t be able to resist hidden rewards. 

Even if they knew the hidden rewards wouldn’t be something good, most gamers would have to complete the quest anyway just to cure their curiosity.

“Okay, I’ll go with you to complete the quest.”
“Great, let’s go.”
The two then turned towards the starter village and started running again. 

However, they had to stop after just 10 minutes of running. 

They were only 10 minutes away from leaving the forest, but there was something, or rather someone, stopping them from leaving.
