My mother, a single parent, and undergraduate with a meager salary, struggles to pay for our education. She even said, "I can't afford to send you all to school. One of you should temporarily stop attending school." It goes without saying that I will be the one sacrificed. It's ironic that out of the three of us, I performed the best in school, yet I've made the one who stop attending school.
Because I anticipated it, I wasn't shocked or sad. I won't, though, take it that lightly. I won't be content in doing nothing. The future we're discussing is mine. Although I'm still just seventeen and cannot legally work, it doesn't mean I am unable to accomplish anything.
I applied for scholarships, and now my problem is the funds needed to pay for my school supplies and other costs in the future. I'm desperate for work.
My current issue is finding the money I need to pay for my school supplies and other expenses in the future after I applied for scholarships. I absolutely need a job, and any work will do.
I informed my mother what I was doing, and she just approved. Although she didn't provide any supportive or consoling remarks, it doesn't matter. The fact that I heard no complaints is what matters. She just informed me that as long as I don't annoy her, I may do anything I want.
I didn't have to look long before I was hired as a dishwasher in a local diner. Even if the money is meager, it is still better than nothing. After school, I went to work. The owner showed no interest in me. She doesn't mind me as long as I do a decent job.
On the way home from work, I stumbled upon a poster. According to the advertisement, they are looking for a male servant between the ages of 16 and 18, with or without experience.
Did I initially view it with suspicion because...why 16 or 17 years old? Those are still underage, right? But the location on the flyer startled me. It was close to our home, and I am informed that this location is where the largest mansion in our city could be found. It appears that getting this job was quite difficult, but I have never been someone who would give up without a sweat. If I ever failed to get then I can just put this memory in the back of my mind.
The poster was torn, and I put it in my backpack. The fewer the rivals, the better. Although I'm not certain whether this was their sole poster.
I went to the address that was written in the poster early in the morning to inquire about their job offer. Additionally, this was the first time I had missed lessons. If I miss one day of school, I don't think it will be that bad. I’ll just try to catch up with the lessons tomorrow.
When I got in front of the gate. I saw a guard and told him my intention to apply for the job. He asked for my age. I said “17”. He nodded his head and then talked to someone on the phone. I saw him nodding his head from time to time and then after that, he hang up. He looked at me with emotionless eyes. He ordered me to enter and wait for someone to come pick me up as he unlocked the little gate next to the large gate.
As soon as I entered, I noticed a plush minibus driving toward me. It stopped in front of me, and when I approached, its door automatically opened, inviting me inside.
There are other teens like myself inside the bus. They must be applying for the position, too. We are five people, yet none of us seem to be close to one another. They were all seated at a window, gazing forth. They gave me no attention at all. They appear to exist in their own world with no intention of communicating with anybody else; I will act in the same way.

The minibus kept moving as I was seated in the backseat. In each large gate it comes to, it pauses for a minute. There are several large gates since the area is so large. Even though I have yet to spot any sign of the mansion, I am aware that it exists here. This place is larger than a town in terms of size. The owner must be quite wealthy.
The bus halted when we arrived at our destination while my thoughts kept wandering.
We were met by an elderly man who identified himself as a butler. He looks like a cold, formal, and strict person. He explained to us that we must take a test before being admitted. Who will be picked will be decided by the test.
When they heard the term "test," I noticed some people who appeared to become anxious. Nobody seemed to have anticipated this. Though, I'm curious about the content of the test. Since no one anticipated it, it follows that nobody considered preparing for it. We came here for us to be a servant and not a scholar. We came here to do labor and not to do test. Well, there’s no use in getting frustrated about it.
I consoled myself by telling myself that if this doesn't work, I'll just stick to being a dishwasher for the time being. I'll be 18 in a year. Then I'll start looking for jobs that pay more. But I'm a little interested in the type of job they have in mind for us. I have a general notion of the job.
I inhaled deeply to brace myself for this blind test.
