[Extra] 59 - Ye Lan x Ye Xiao - «Daytime Sleep» 06

Gui Mao had still not entered a dream when he was suddenly woken by the sound of panicked footsteps. This sound was even more abrupt in the completely quiet night, and he could feel each step in the pit of his stomach. The person eagerly rushed to his side, suddenly coming to a stop half a zhang away.

Gui Mao opened his eyes, and was met with Bing Xu leaning against the tree beside him, gasping for breath, looking at him. At first he panted loudly, but seeing Gui Mao was awake, he immediately covered his mouth with his hand and held his breath, not making another sound and only saying: “I’m sorry for disturbing you, you can continue sleeping.”

Gui Mao turned his head to look at the moon hanging in the middle of the sky, and suddenly felt a big headache: “Didn’t I tell you to go to the meeting point? Why didn’t you listen?”

“No no,” Bing Xu hurriedly explained, “I went to the meeting point.” As he spoke, he pulled out a thin piece of paper from his chest and smoothed out the wrinkles, proudly spreading it out in front of him, “Tomorrow’s map, I brought it.”

Bing Xu’s eyes gleamed as he looked at him, as if he was waiting to be praised, Gui Mao was stunned for a moment, only able to react: “You….. already ran there and back?”

Bing Xu shamefully said: “I’m sorry. I remembered the place wrong, and took a fork in the road….. and wasted some time.”

“What about the antidote?!” Gui Mao’s heart beat wildly, and his voice trembled as he asked.

Bing Xu was at a loss: “What antidote?”

“That small white pill I’ve been telling you to eat every night for these past few days!” Gui Mao jumped up, flustered and exasperated, wanting to smack him, but just as he stood up he felt an unbearable pain on his foot and only managed to jump half-way, falling head first. Bing Xu grabbed him by the collar and carried him up, still not understanding what he was pointing out.

Actually, Gui Mao knew it was no use asking him. The antidote and next day’s poison were both distributed at the same time, and would not be given out until exactly at midnight.

“What time is it right now?!” Gui Mao suddenly realised the extreme urgency of the situation, and he felt no trace of his previous tiredness. Bing Xu naively shook his head, and he knew it was a useless question to ask, so he firmly pushed and berated him: “Don’t stand there stupidly, quickly go back, maybe there’s still time.”

Bing Xu moved back a step, asking in neither a slow of fast manner: “Hurry for what?”

“The antidote! Did you forget?!” Gui Mao warned himself time was running out, and in his heart omitted a hundred thousand curses towards his ancestors, “The first day we set off I told you, every day at midnight you need to take medicine at the meeting point, if you don’t eat it you will die, did you completely ignore me?”

Bing Xu defended himself in a small voice: “You never told me.”

Gui Mao: “……”

Bing Xu retreated two steps as he was glared at, and carefully asked: “And you?”

“You ate the same thing as me. Do you also need the antidote?” Bing Xu gradually understood what was happening, tightly holding his wrist and firmly saying: “I won’t let anything bad happen to you again.”

“…..Where does this ‘again’ come from?” Gui Mao wondered, he was rarely wounded, had something major ever happened to him?

“I couldn’t save you last time….. I really regretted it, and I was also really afraid. I couldn’t defeat them, there were too many of them…..” Bing Xu’s expression gradually became chaotic, and the hand holding onto him also began to tremble, looking like the first signs of him sinking into madness. Gui Mao hurriedly tried to snap him out of it: “Wake up, wake up, Bing Xu.”

He could roughly guess what he was imagining after listening to a few sentences, and Gui Mao thought he might be a bit hysterical, so he pulled him into his arms and comforted him: “It was just a dream, that’s all, don’t believe it, it wasn’t real.”

“You don’t need to lie to me, I know. In fact, this here is just a dream…..” Bing Xu buried himself against his shoulders, and hot water fell from his eyelashes as he pressed them against his neck, “You simply don’t know me, don’t talk to me, don’t hug me….. I have been dreaming all this time…..”

“Even if this is just a dream….. Gui Mao, please don’t die.” Bing Xu hugged him and cried.

Gui Mao cut the scene short with a sigh: “We’ll die soon, if we don’t get the antidote at midnight the two of us will just die together for love, and you still have time to snivel here.”

Bing Xu lifted up his head, eyes red, and muttered in hindsight “Oh, right.” and, following their hugging position, raised him up and carried him on his shoulder as he suddenly ran wildly and sped away.

Gui Mao hesitated for an instant, originally wanting to tell him to put him down. After all, he had just ran all the way there and back, his strength was already bad, and now he was carrying another person, so the probability was really small. But, thinking about his reaction just now, he was afraid it would be futile.

Forget it, if they can’t catch up then they can’t catch up. Having the same bed during life, and the same tomb during death1 , is not necessarily unlucky.

But in case they really make it…..

As Gui Mao was jolted about, he lifted his hand to rub Bing Xu’s dishevelled short hair, not daring to think about this answer.

Every time he thought about Bing Xu, and about the future, he could only think about death. He would think about when he would lose his life at the training grounds, and think about who would die first. He would think that, at most, if they managed to endure and graduate in the end, they would each have their own masters and live far apart from each other, blocking swords for their master until their useless corpses were abandoned in the wilderness, without a name and without a family.

Even if they wouldn’t meet again, being able to live smoothly for ten or twenty years could already be considered the most realistic and lucky ending they could assume for themselves.

He couldn’t expect for the Nightrunner to suddenly close down, returning their freedoms, and being able to live like a harmonious couple afterwards, only having to till the fields, raise chickens and ducks, feed hay to the cattle, and cook their rice.

He only wanted for each of them to be heartless.

Then, they wouldn’t need to talk about separation, and they wouldn’t need to fear death.

As the thought about this, Gui Mao found it hard to breathe, and a throbbing pain began to spread from the bottom of his heart, that was when he realised that it was almost midnight, and the poison had began to flare up.

Bing Xu was naturally not much better, he couldn’t stop himself from tripping over a branch once and fell, but was still being careful to protect himself so Gui Mao wouldn’t fall. He took advantage of the movement and rolled back up, not waiting for Gui Mao to speak, and continued moving forward in large strides.

Bing Xu’s spirit was weary and his strength was exhausted, but he still ran faster and faster, until at last he arrived at the meeting point at the last moment.

Gui Mao fell to the ground and inspected his situation, feeling terrified. Bing Xu had exerted his true qi to move, so there was blood gushing out of his mouth, nose, and ears, and his complexion was terrible. He fell down right where he stopped, and didn’t have the strength to crawl back up. Gui Mao hurriedly guided him to the antidote and supported him as he stuffed it into his mouth. Bing Xu weakly held his sleeve and vaguely said: “I’m tired….. I’ll sleep for a while….. Don’t run off while I’m asleep…..”

Gui Mao didn’t have time to comfort him before his wrist dropped, and Bing Xu had already lost consciousness.

If he had known that both his endurance and speed were this astonishing, he would have opened his mouth to let him carry him from the beginning, why even bother making him go back and forth.

Gui Mao suddenly realised, it turned out that these few days Bing Xu was not catching up to him, but rather waiting for him.
