"Enough about me."Shen Yi insisted. He got the feeling that his wife just met one that could be her partner in crime.
"Why, my darling?" Lu Xinyi laughed. "Don't you know roasting each other is part of a healthy relationship?" she added.
Shen Yi leaned down and whispered to her ear.
"I'll make sure you wouldn't be able to walk tomorrow if you keep playing with me." Lu Xinyi blushed a little.
"Shen Yi!"
Xiao Lan burst into laughter as she watched the couple argued.
"Now, now. Give her a break, Shen Yi. Don't worry I wouldn't show your pictures when you were younger eating dirt."
Shen Yi glared at her. "I never ate dirt. Must you compare me to my little brother?"
"A spoiled brat Shen Yi? Let me come over sometime to see them." Lu Xinyi said.
"Xinyi." Shen Yi warned, his hand on her waist pulled her closer.
Xiao Lan laughed harder.
"Well at least if you're going to punish your wife in bed, don't disappoint her."
Lu Xinyi looked at their faces and flushed. Noticing her discomfort, Xiao Lan raised a brow.
"Don't tell me you two haven't had your wedding night yet?"
The married couple refused to look at each other. Shen Yi cleared his throat and look away while Lu Xinyi bit her lip in embarrassment.
"Geez, no need to be shy. My husband and I took a month before we consummated our marriage. Alcohol helps to calm your nerves though if you're too nervous." Xiao Lan winked to Lu Xinyi. "I should go. My husband is probably looking for me by now. Shen Yi, give me a call is your little wife want some company."
---
The applause echoes through the room as the host stepped off the podium, his smile wide as he waved to the crowd and thank them for attending. Lu Xinyi clapped politely with everyone, secretly relieved that she didn't have to endure another round of speeches.
The music resumed and the ballroom was filled again with partners. The lights were dimmed and the sound of violins and piano floated in the area. Lu Xinyi watched in awe as the couples took the floor, dancing into enchanting music.
Shen Yi pushed back from his chair and offered a hand on her, gesturing to the dance floor once again. With a small smile, Lu Xinyi accepted his offer and allowed him to pick her from her seat, leading her to the dance floor.
And then someone exclaimed, people gathered around and saw a man on his knees, proposing to his date. The woman with teary eyes covered her mouth before letting him slip on the ring on her left hand.
"This is the second time we're seeing a sudden proposal." Lu Xinyi commented as she and her husband started to move slowly in time with the music.
"I'm sorry I couldn't give you a proposal as grand as that."
Lu Xinyi shook her head. "It doesn't matter. What matters is what we have right now."
Shen Yi's eyes drifted over her face, taking in how her lips curled into a smile. His hand came up and cupped her jaw. Lu Xinyi's head tilted towards him, her eyes half-lidded as he leaned down to kiss her softly.
It was a brief kiss as they parted too soon. His hand went past her jaw and trailed into her long hair, pulling her head into his chest. Lu Xinyi closed her eyes hoping that Shen Yi will accept her heart even though it was shattered by another man. She was content to feel him close and that was enough. She couldn't ask for more, right?
She was full of love and was so ready to give everything to him but she doubted he will accept it. Just like what she said before she married him, she had nothing to offer. He could get any woman he wants to, what could possibly she could give to beat them?
"Xinyi?"
His voice made her looked up, not noticing the tears on her eyes.
"Why are you crying?" His eyes filled with confusion. Did he say something wrong?
There were so many questions Lu Xinyi want to ask, yet there's one question she needed to be answered. Something she needed to know before she gives her heart away. Even if he didn't feel the same, even if that means she will feel her heart breaking again.
"Why me?" she asked.
Shen Yi stopped the pace of her steps and stared down at his wife.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean…" Lu Xinyi gathered her courage and calm herself. She needed to know. "Why did you marry me of all people? Why did you choose me? You can have any woman you want. Why marry someone like me?"
