Chapter 71 – Practice game

TL: Cheetah

ED: Ryuubii

It was the day of Natsumi-senpai’s practice match. I was in front of the station to meet Sara-senpai.

The venue was at school, so we could have met at the usual convenience store, but…

“Since it was Sunday…” That was the unimportant reason why we met here.

It was my suggestion, but Senpai nodded without asking any questions.

Of course, I was early on this meeting day.

There may be a lot of reasons, like being a guy or not wanting to keep her waiting, but the most important thing was to stop Sara-senpai from getting picked up by some random guy.

If a beautiful girl such as her is standing alone, there is no way any of the frivolous lads around here would keep quiet.

“Good morning, Takanashi-san. Did I keep you waiting?”

“Good morning, Sara-senpai. Don’t worry. I just arrived a little while ago.”

That bit of greeting exchange made me happy.

“I’m sorry for making you wait every time, so I’ll come earlier next time…”

“Sara-senpai, it’s my role to arrive first and wait for you. So you are forbidden from coming earlier than me.”

“E-Eh, okay. I-If that’s what Takanashi-san wants, then I’ll arrive on time?

After meeting up, we headed to school.

“It was the first time I saw a live tennis match. And it was a lot more fun than I thought. It’s probably because it was Natsumi-senpai’s match.”

“Yes. I am not interested in tennis either, but became curious because Natsumi is playing.”

By the way, today’s Senpai’s look is different from the previous date(?). Unlike our last date, she is now wearing a more casual look.

But it’s such a refreshing and innocent look! This is killing me!

However, she didn’t wear the hat I gave her today.

Did she notice that I was looking at her head?

“I’m sorry, that hat is my treasure. I’ve decided not to use it except for special occasions so that it will last as long as possible…”

Saying it like that… I thought it was worth gifting it to her.

——————————————

We arrived at school and headed for the tennis court.

There are surprisingly a lot of students. Many of them appear to be coming to school for club activities, but the plainclothes people might be cheering for tennis.

Come to think of it. How many times has Senpai come to cheer for Natsumi-senpai?

When we arrived at the tennis court, there were more people than I expected.

A banner dedicated to Natsumi-senpai caught my attention.

That was probably her fan club.

Are those two people waving at me from my class…?

I waved my hand as if to say hello.

Shall we sit around here?

Sara-senpai chose a relatively empty area.

There is still time before the game starts.

However, we are already attracting a lot of attention.

Sara-senpai, in her casual look, has tremendous destructive power.

Even the people who might be cheering for our opponents are peeking at her.

“…Satsukawa-san’s with someone…”

“Hey, it’s a boy…”

“Oof! They look close. Go talk to her.”

“…But she’s got a guy next to her.”

I’m satisfied that I’m keeping the bugs away.

“By the way, I’ve prepared lunch, so if you’re hungry, just let me know.”

Senpai, who seemed not to mind all the attention, talked to me in her usual manner.

I hadn’t talked to her about lunch, but she had already prepared it.

It was blissful that I could eat Senpai’s food even on my days off.

——————————————

The game was over, and Natsumi-senpai won overwhelmingly. She came over here, still in her jersey.

“Nice work, Natsumi.”

“That was awesome, Natsumi-senpai.”

She looked a little embarrassed as I said that.

“I knew Sara would come, but I didn’t hear that even you were coming, Takanashi-kun?”

“Sara-senpai invited me secretly.”

As we were having such a conversation, we heard a loud and bothersome cheer.

“He is as popular as ever, isn’t he?”

The banner read “Hayato Yokokawa”.

I looked at the tennis court and saw him.

He must be very popular.

Maybe there were even girls from other schools that came to watch him…?

“I’m off to the cheerleading squad.”

Saying so, Natsumi-senpai headed toward the fan club.

“Well, shall we have lunch? Natsumi still has one more game later.”

“Ah, is that so? Where shall we eat?”

Senpai talked about lunch as if the cheers were nonexistent.

To be honest… I was relieved that Sara-senpai showed no interest in that guy at all.

“I don’t feel comfortable here. Shall we go to the flower garden? There will be no one else there, so I think the two of us can have a leisurely meal.”

My heart skipped a beat when she said, “just the two of us.”

Calm down, my heart. Senpai words don’t have such a meaning.

——————————————

I don’t know the rules, but since it’s a team competition, the more wins, the better, I guess?

And it looked like our school won.

I think that guy won too, but he looked so frustrated.

From the look on his face, one can tell that he is serious about tennis.

“Congratulations, Natsumi.”

“Thanks. How was it Takanashi-kun? Did you have fun?”

“Yes! I never watch tennis that often, but it was pretty interesting. Natsumi-senpai was very cool.”

When I honestly told her how I felt, Natsumi-senpai, who looked a little embarrassed, started hitting me on the back.

“Stop that! You’re embarrassing me!”

Perhaps because I praised her for her favorite tennis game, she seemed slightly different from the usual Natsumi-senpai, which was refreshing to see.

“Then, Natsumi is probably busy, so we’ll excuse ourselves. Takanashi-san, is that okay?”

“Yes. Natsumi-senpai, let’s continue this tomorrow.”

“No, this is enough talk about me! Anyway, thank you for coming today.”

Natsumi-senpai then waved and left.

Of course, I noticed…

He was glaring at me.

At first, I was annoyed that he was glaring at me, but it wasn’t like he had hostility like the idiots in my class.

Then, when our eyes finally met, he gave me a slight smile.

He raised his hand and made a gesture like a greeting. Really, what’s going on with that guy?
