“Long live the new republic!” the crowd was restless.
I watched our first chancellor stare himself in the mirror for an hour, fidgeting with his tie every few minutes.
We all fought a civil war together for years.
An oldhead like him struggling with civilian clothes is to be expected but he damn well better learn to get used to it.
Because even though the war was won, had we really changed anything?
No, we simply knocked some pieces off the board and reworded the rules but the game itself is still played the same.
Power: Invisible yet always there. Always waiting. Always searching for the one most worthy, but comes with a different price to keep it.
I pray the chancellor realizes that he is no longer a revolutionary. Like the king he toppled before him, he is now a governor and skillfully must act the part.
Are you thinking that I backed the wrong horse? Maybe, but only time will tell.
“Sir, the crowd has become very fiery. Now would be the best time to begin.” I hastily reminded him.
He let out a sigh.
“6 years. It took 6 years of fighting with our lives on the line but here we are. We finally did it.”
“Yes, and now we have the people’s support by the bullhorns. This is our chance to finally set things in stone, chancellor.”
“Have confidence, but you absolutely cannot afford to mess this up.” I added on.
The chancellor chuckled while redoing his tie. “Oh ye of little faith…”
He walked out to show himself and the rest of us followed behind him. We were immediately greeted by thunderous applause and cheering.
The chancellor waved to the people for a good minute then gave his long prepared speech:
“6 years ago: You. Me. Every man, woman, and child. Were victims of absolute tyranny by the monarchy.”
“But one day, I had a dream considered so radical for its time. A dream for our great nation Valendia, to be so prosperous and most importantly free. A nation that was governed strictly by the people, for the people…”
Blah blah blah.

Did you think I would force you to listen to all that rubbish idealism?
A nation by the people, for the people? When half our population cannot even read? I could hardly contain my laughter.
Take a closer look at the crowd. What do you see?
Citizens showing their gratitude for being free from the shackles of oppression?
I see people that are solely here for the man, not the cause. In fact, they do not even understand the cause.
The man preaching to them beside me is viewed as a godsend in their lives. A man that was victorious in fighting against the great evil in the name of the people, just like in those fairy tales.
In their heads the chancellor had been symbolized as a man of action, someone people could rally behind.
I also admire him, but I will not swallow the ideas he preaches so easily.
For if the crowd truly understood what this democracy meant for them, they would be revolting in disgust.
But do not fret, as I will make sure that never happens.
Did I ramble too much? I was just trying to pass the time.
This event is very important to me, not because of the speech, nor the crowd but because of these photographers, all eagerly trying to take pictures of our first-ever democratic head of state.
It was too rare of an opportunity to ignore. The plan was simple, position myself to appear as if I was standing beside the beloved chancellor rather than behind him, and it went flawlessly.
Coincidentally, our similar hair tones are a nice bonus. It makes me look like a younger version of him.
With one simple trick, I solidified myself in the history books for future generations to see. It’s a good start but rest assured, I will be in far more pages to come.
"Long live the republic!" the chancellor finally concludes his speech.
The crowd mirrors him and roars enthusiastically.
Indeed, long live our glorious republic...
