Interlude: Faint Echoes

“Our ‘mutual acquaintance,’ as you call him, positioned himself as the herald of Rebirth entirely by accident.”

“Good afternoon,” the man said, leaning down to regard the girl.

“H-hello,” she squeaked.

“I understand you must be frightened; this is always a scary transition. But don’t worry, my Little Sin. You’ll be well taken care of. The attendants have been kind to you, yes?”

“Y-yes,” the girl said. “But w-where are my Mama and Papa? W-where did they g-go?”

The man approached, offering her a warm smile and patting her head with a slender hand that dwarfed her entire body. “It’ll be alright, dearie, they don’t exist anymore. You don’t have to worry.”

“W-what? What?”

“And there’s even better news: I’m your new papa now, okay?”

“B-but I don’t want a new papa!” the girl said, sniffling on her tiny bed. “I want Papa. I want Mama! Where are they? It’s not fair! P-please, please let me g-go—I wanna go home.”

“Oh?” the man said, gesturing to the padded room around them. “Well, I might be wrong, but to me, it looks like you already are home. You know, if you’re good, then I bet we’ll have lots of fun together, just you and your new papa.”

“B-but, m-mister, I don’t… I don’t wanna be here anymore, I wanna go home! I wanna go home!”

“Mister?” the man said, his lips thinning. He took a step forward, looming over her. “It’s ‘Papa.’ ‘Papa,’ understand?”

“Y-yes, Papa, I u-understand, I understand, I’ll be g-good.”

“Of course you will,” the man said. “Because you’re a good girl, aren’t you?”

“Y-yes, I’ll be a good girl… Papa.”

“Wonderful. I’m so proud of you, dearie.” He walked off toward the padded door, adjusting his tie. “Doctor?” he called. “I’m approving Unit 5,805,413 for tomorrow’s procedure. Do see that she’s fitted with The Stone by the end of the day.”

“Yes, my Lord,” a faint voice said.

The man turned back to the girl, giving her a soft smile. “We’ll have lots of fun tomorrow, you and me. Don’t give the doctor any trouble, okay?”

“O-okay, P-Papa.”

“Be good,” he said, shutting the door and leaving the girl in darkness.
