Life is full of ironies, and contradictions. For centuries mankind has plotted it's ultimate downfall in numerous morbid ways. We believed that it would be either by aliens, zombies or nukes; the ironic thing is that none of those killed us. If asked a survivor would tell you it was our poor actions, which while a valid critique fails to come near being accurate. No, what almost killed humanity wasn't any choice we made, it was the lack of choices, sometime in the mid 21 century humanity just stopped, everything.
My name is Anthony Jackson, when I was 6 my mother and father got a divorce, and I was forced to live with him away from my siblings. When I turned 8 I was enrolled in a military academy, where I stayed until my father died. After he died I was able to finally move home to my 36 year old mother and 2 sisters of 14 and 15. I'd hoped to patch up our relationship before my youngest sister turned 18 but life had it's own plans.
"Stay in your homes, this is a broadcast of the USDHS security alert system, this message will repeat! Due to a mass societal case of lethargy civil services are currently unavailable, please stay inside with your doors locked, we repeat stay in..." I turned the TV off while looking at the 3 beautiful women with me. "This house has a panic room, I want you to gather food and water and go in it, I am gonna go scavenge for supplies." My youngest sister Beth started to protest before I cut her off "The days of lofty feminist ideals are dead, assuming we are not the only unaffected there is a very good chance that there will be looters and roving gangs. You 3 would be prime targets, luckily the panic room is near impossible to find if you don't know what you're looking for." The harsh logic of my statement sank in as the women began to follow my instructions, for security sake I sat near the entrance with my rifle in a just in case act. Beth walked up behind me "Tony? How will we know when you're back?" I pointed toward a dot in the wall, "that's a camera, there are about a dozen connected to screens inside the panic room." She nodded and began to turn away when an urge overwhelmed me. I reached out and caught her elbow before pulling her to me, she was soon close enough our noses touched. I bent close and kissed her, I could feel her tense up before her lips opened, what I'd meant as a brotherly peck soon became a fierce battle of hope and shame, as our tongues fought each other.
