Chapter 14
"She's on the roof." A raspy voice says behind me.
I roll over in my bed to see Dihya. The old earth channeller moves towards me with a cup. She forces a straw into my mouth, and I greedily slurp up glorious, crisp, cold water.
Goddess I'm thirsty.
I rub my face, and take in my surroundings. Dihya's treatment room is dark. The only window is shuttered, with faint traces of sunlight glowing around the window's boards.
"What?" I ask, sleepily.
"Your girlfriend, she's on the roof. You were looking around like a lost puppy the moment you opened your eyes!" Dihya puts on a sad, pleading expression, and frantically looks around the room, performing a mocking impression of me. She chuckles to herself, then shoves another glass of water under my nose.
"Uh, she's uh, not my girlfriend." I sheepishly stammer as I finish the healer's second offering of water.
"Ha! And I'm the Empress of China!" The woman sprays me with spit as she heaves with laughter. She straightens her robes, and resumes shouting at me. "Are you done sleeping yet?! Ready to get out of bed, princess?! C'mon you took too long to heal, there's sick kids on the street that need this bed! Go on, get!"
The old woman swats at me with the back of her hand, shooing me out of the bed. To my surprise, I land on surprisingly sturdy feet. I don't feel great, but I certainly feel much better.
"How long did I sleep?" I ask, as I begin dressing myself in my blue sundress that someone left for me in the bedside chair.
"Six days." Dihya huffs. "I was about to start looking for a knight in shining armor to come kiss you, maybe round up some dwarves to dance around a bit, see if that would help. There's a drunk woman that sleeps in the alley back there who's pretty short. Two more days and I would of had her in here-"
"Six days? I thought you said it would only take three." I interrupt the woman's ranting.
Dihya glares at me. "What can I say? I thought you'd be a bit tougher. Now get out!" The angry healer shoves me into the hall and slams her door shut behind me.
I take a moment to test my knee, gently putting weight on it. A few tentative steps later and I'm confident that it's fully recovered. My shoulder however, still has pretty limited movement and is sending a dull, aching pain up the side of my neck.
I follow the hall to the end, and climb the dark stone spiral stairs until I reach the top. I push through a heavy door and into the blinding light of the hot Algerian sun. I shield my eyes with my hand, and wait for them to adjust. I feel her just before I see her.
Lina!
I see my vampire standing at the far end of the roof. She’s in the middle of four large tables, arranged in a square, surrounded by all kinds of strange instruments and devices.
A small windmill spins lazily in the breeze as a collection of wind chimes gently knock a melody into the air behind it. A large metal contraption spins levitating balls around in a small orbit. Beakers and vials of liquid hiss and bubble on the tables, and a large flamingo prunes its feathers in the shade of a half tent.
At the center of it all is Lina. She's wearing black leggings, and an orange tank top. Her hair is tied up in a ponytail, and her large tan arms… are wrapped around Nadia?
What?!
I stand and stare. Nadia is leaning over a table, wearing a light pink lace dress, looking through a microscope, with my vampire behind her, an arm wrapped around her waist, looking over her shoulder. Her small petite body is dwarfed by Lina's standing over her.
What is going on?
Nadia turns around in Lina's arms and says something with a smile. Lina laughs, and Nadia joins her. They giggle together under the bright sun. I feel Lina's happiness waft over to me like a thick smog.
I was only asleep for six days…
Suddenly Lina freezes, and her head jolts up, looking directly at me across the distance of the rooftop.
"Lua!" She shouts, jogging over to me at a human pace. She stops in front of me with a beaming smile. "You're awake!" Lina pulls me into a long, tight hug.
"Yea… sorry I slept so long. What's going on here?" I look towards Nadia, who grins and waves at me.

"Oh, Nadia's just showing me her research! Come look!" Lina grabs my hand and excitedly drags me across the roof.
Lina stops me in front of the tables. "Nadia is researching new applications for air magic! I know this sounds crazy, but she thinks that the air aspect doesn't just include our atmosphere and all the gasses in it, but the space it takes up too! She thinks air magic could be used to influence the actual fabric of space! I know, I know, it's a bold theory, but I've looked at all her research and it looks legit, I think she might actually be onto something! Come look at the aetheric absorption rate of these electrons!" Lina drags me over to a giant microscope with a massive glowing pink gemstone attached to the lens.
Lina continues heaping praise on the young air channeler standing awkwardly beside us. "Nadia was top of her class at the Algiers National Institute of Magic!" She shouts, shoving my head into the microscope.
I take a quick look and pull away, not having a clue what I'm seeing. "Look Lina, that's great, but uhm, could I talk to you? In private maybe?" I give an embarrassed looking Nadia an apologetic glance.
"Oh yea, sure. There's a storage room over there." Lina takes my hand and walks me to a door near the stairs I came up.
We step inside and I find out that 'storage room' may have oversold the small space we now stand in. It's more of a closet really. Lina stands pressed against me in the small, dark space. I look up at her beautiful face, and strong toned shoulders. I immediately feel as small as Nadia with Lina standing this close.
"Yea, we probably do need to talk about what happened with Dihya. But first, how are you feeling?" Lina whispers.
I try to focus on what I wanted to say, but all I can think about is the large hand that suddenly appeared on my lower back. "Uh y-yea… I'm great! Well wait, no, not great, but fine. I'm fine! Uhm, have you been spending a lot of time with Nadia while I was asleep?" I ask.
Hopefully Lina can decipher that mess of a sentence.
Lina looks confused. "Yea, Nadia is wonderful. You're gonna be great friends! She's funny, smart, and really kind. She only just dragged me to the roof to see her work because she said I needed some fresh air. I had barely left your side the last 6 days. I was really worried about you. I'm so glad I had Nadia to keep me compa-"
"Bite me!" I shout.
Oh no, what did I just say?!
My heart beats in my ears, and I realize that I'm pressing myself into Lina's body. I look up at her with pleading eyes.
"What? Y-you want me to bite you?" Lina whispers, letting out a heavy breath.
She brushes some hair away from my face, and I see her eyes dart to my neck. I instinctively raise my chin a little to present myself to her. Her fingers tighten on my back, pressing into my skin as they slide slightly lower. Lina steps forward, pushing into me. As I feel my back hit the wall, I let out a soft, surprised sound somewhere between a yelp and a whimper.
I look up into her dark brown eyes. "Please bite me." I whisper, barely loud enough to be heard.
A small growl emanates from Lina's throat, as she moves her face just millimeters in front of mine. I tilt my head back fully, letting out a soft, heavy breath tempered by a small whimper.
Lina's large frame presses into me hard and fast, pinning me to the wall with her overwhelming size and strength.
Lina leans in close, then suddenly stops. A look of recognition flashes onto her face, and she narrows her eyes at me.
"Wait. What is this really about?" She asks gently.
Oh no, oh no, oh no.
I can feel her emotions shift, and I know she's figured me out.
"Wait, really?" She looks down at me, searching my face for what feels like an eternity. "Aww, Lua! Come here." Lina pulls me into a tight hug.
She smiles down at me. "Lua, you're my only thrall. Someone I just met isn't going to change that. I promise."
I relax into her arms with a big sigh. "Ok…thanks. Sorry." I whisper, looking down, unable to meet her eyes.
She tilts my chin up with one gentle finger. "Look, I'm not going to bite you because you're jealous. The first time I drink from you needs to be more special than that."
"Ok… I guess you're right." I sigh with a small, frustrated nod.
Lina presses into me, gently pinning me to the wall again. She leans in towards my neck, and takes a deep breath, breathing me in.
"I will bite you soon though." She whispers, her hot breath landing on my soft skin. Her teeth gently brushes my neck as she moves up to whisper in my ear.
"And when I do, you're gonna beg for it."
